The Luke Combs cover is incredibly faithful (even down to the "checkout girl" line), and it's a great listen, but I still prefer the original. The classics are classics for a reason.

I really have no dog in this game even though I bought the Tracy Chapman album when it was new, and I don't really know who Luke Combs is or why he would want to cover that song. But "the classics are classics for a reason" is absolutely true.

As long as you're not just saying that to say it. There are far too many people who like Whitney Houston's hideous, BELLOWING version of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You" and pay little heed to Dolly's original, ethereal and far superior version. Some people don't even know Dolly Parton wrote it.
Then there is the curious case of "Bette Davis Eyes", a hit for the previously unknown Kim Carnes in 1981, but originally written and recorded by well known songwriter Jackie DeShannon in 1974. In this case the DeShannon version is absolutely horrid. A crazy arrangement that doesn't know if it's country, honky tonk, pop or God knows what. Ghastly. Definitely an instance when the cover is superior.
