Subject: Celebrity Cancellation Status

Written By: LyricBoy on 09/23/23 at 7:09 pm

(Thread name changed and genericized by popular demand)

Looks like the backlash for Russell Brand is now setting in.

https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2023/sep/23/firms-pull-ads-from-rumble-platform-over-russell-brand-videos

Burger King, Asos, the Barbican and HelloFresh, the recipe box delivery service, have removed their ads From Brand’s “Rumble” video platform.

I never knew what the attraction was for this guy in the first place. He always struck me as a greasy hired slime ball.  8-P

Last weekend, Brand was accused of rape, sexual assault and emotional abuse between 2006 and 2013 after a joint investigation by the Sunday Times, the Times and Channel 4 Dispatches. He denies the allegations, of course.

I'm just thinking...maybe we should have a "celebrity canceled status" topic, the way we do with "celebrity relationship status". It would be a way to keep tally in this day and age of continuous cancellation.

Not a bad idea. Should I just re-title my original post to “Celebrity Cancellations”? ???

Or, how about "celebrity cancellation status". That way we can also keep track if they come back from cancellation (an incredibly difficult task, as they will always be "stained", rightfully or wrongfully) , and so on.

The only thing I've really enjoyed Russell in was the remake of Arthur.  He was the perfect choice to play a drunken playboy who has lots of money.  They should have called the movie Russell because that's him in real life lol

Over the years, since the start of his career, I never 'trusted' him, now it has all come out in the press.

I think Brand’s cancellation is permanent. In recognition of that, therefore:

Let the name of Russell Brand be stricken from every book and tablet, stricken from all pylons and obelisks, stricken from every monument of entertainment.

Let the name of Russell Brand be unheard and unspoken, erased from the memory of men for all time.

The Metropolitan Police says it will investigate allegations of "non-recent" sexual offences following news reports about above mentioned comedian.

So.. as things stand, Brand has not been cancelled, but may end up in prison?

His "always consensual" schtick is a bit suspect, when you consider things like this from 2012:
https://thewest.com.au/entertainment/celebrity-gossip/connolly-blasts-brand-over-inappropriate-behaviour-ng-ya-303873

..or even earlier:
https://www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrity-news/hes-a-vile-predator-629597

Though that article finishes with:
Last month Russell shared with us his six-point plan for success with the ladies.

Judging by these little gems and Dannii's mortified reaction to his advances, we'd recommend brushing up on those pulling skills mate.

..which shows just how seriously his behaviour was taken at the time.

Though.. why does almost everybody seem to think he's intelligent? Just because he's a motormouth who misuses words they haven't heard of? His analytical skills are borderline non-existent.

Speaking as someone who has been inside half the prisons in the UK, no, there is no such clichéd cellmate :-)

Ah, then that would be good for the residents of the UK correctional institutions.

Here in the US of A, “Bubba” is a common and dreaded feature.

Most UK prisons at least pay lip service to the idea that inmates should be treated humanely & shouldn't be bullied, or be victims of sexual assault.

Well, over a 20-year period, I did work in somewhere between 60 and 70 prisons in the UK (and one in South Africa, but that was before it opened). I've yet to stay the night in one, though it has been a close-run thing on one or two occasions :)

"Don't drop the soap".

I did write a "Rock the Boat" parody along those lines.. that was back when Amiright was a lot more prudish, and before I realized Whatfreaks was there as another outlet for that sort of material. I wonder if I can find it...

Looks like Kevin Spacey has been semi-uncanceled in England, but it remains to be seen whether ultra-woke Hollywood will take him back.

Kevin Spacey Receives Standing Ovation at Oxford University Lecture on Cancel Culture

www.yahoo.com/entertainment/kevin-spacey-receives-standing-ovation-091029711.html

Excerpt:

In what is thought to have been his first public appearance since being found not guilty of sexual assault charges in a highly publicized U.K. trial, Kevin Spacey was given a standing ovation by an audience at Oxford University on Monday, Oct. 16 after giving a performance as part of a lecture on cancel culture.

The two-time Oscar winner delivered a five-minute scene from Timon of Athens, William Shakespeare’s play about wealth, greed and betrayal that many contemporary critics have said explores what is today referred to as cancel culture.

Written by Shakespeare in the early 1600s, Timon of Athens follows a rich citizen of the Greek capital who would lavish his riches on parasitic companions, only to find himself rejected by them when he loses his wealth. He ultimately denounces mankind and lives in isolation in a cave. Although Spacey gave no context as to why he chose an excerpt from this play, the performance could be seen as linked to his own rejection by Hollywood and the cultural world in the wake of the sexual assault allegations that emerged in 2017.

The performance in Oxford University also came just days after London’s Prince Charles Cinema dropped an offer it had accepted to host the world premiere of Control, Spacey’s first film following the trial.

“Last night it came to our attention that your film features Kevin Spacey, in particular his first film since the court case,” the manager of the central London cinema told The Telegraph. “My staff as well as I are horrified that we are being mentioned in the same breath as his new film for the premiere.”
