Subject: “War Porn”

Written By: LyricBoy on 04/08/23 at 5:07 pm

With the whole Russian/Ukrainian thing going on, I’ve noticed a new sort of entertainment on the web, which I call “war porn”. You see unseemly stories, some backed up with video, and some just write-ups, getting peoples’ jollies by celebrating the carnage. Stuff like:

”Ukrainian waif takes out 100 Russians with a .22 caliber pistol”
”Javelin missile knocks out a WW2-era Russian tank at 10 mile range”
”Russian column decimated by suicide drones”’

Most of it heralds unbelievable feats at the hand of Ukrainians, but you see some from the ‘other side’ too.

The latest “war porn” appears to be top secret documents leaked that claim that Russian losses for the war are something like 12,000-15,000 deaths as opposed to the 200,000 that the West has been claiming.  The DOD is PO’d about this and is trying to find out who’s leaked the docs, all the while claiming that it’s all disinformation. My thought… if it’s disinformation then why look for the “leaker”? ???

Once again, truth is one of the casualties of war. William Westmoreland must be having a good chuckle in his grave these days.

Plenty of misinformation around there. Everything should be taken with a grain of salt.

I figured it was something similar to "Disaster Porn" which has been mentioned in this forum.

Yeah some people really get off from seeing somebody else’s carnage, real or imaginary. On the web, it’s all about page hits.

Like rubbernecking when driving, but 'war porn' is on a major scale?

Because some people are attracted to those stories as bad as porn.

This is honestly no different than the news media. When a disaster happens they show it over and over and continue to "go wall to wall" (to use their phrase for it) even when there is nothing new to say. It is at this point that it ceases being news and becomes wallowing. That's "disaster porn". The news media is expert at it.

So in another words, it's something people get off on or get their jollies from?

Of course I don't mind seeing/hearing about Russians getting taken out by Ukrainians, as long as it's from a reliable source. I mainly get my news about the Russia-Ukraine War from Telegram and Kyiv Independent.

In the US though the war seems to be politicized just like everything else. Biden and the Democrats support assisting with the war, while many (not all) Republicans are against it and some are even pro-Russia just because their favorite president is friends/allies with Putin. Speaking of which, Trump just officially declared WORLD WAR III on his Twitter feed, lol.

Yes

Not necessarily sexual. It's entertainment is what it is. The line between news and entertainment has long been blurred. What we have now is "infotainment". People enjoy watching this stuff as so gaudily presented, whether they know it or not. That's why, for example, local news stations go wall to wall for even minor snow storms, as if it had never happened before. And remember the credo of news TV, "if it bleeds it leads". That equals ratings and ratings equals money.
