It's about darn time! I see he's been charged with his role in the "hush money" incident. I wonder if he'll get more charges? Would serve him right. ::)

First things first.  He needs to be convicted, then we can talk about jail time.  My guess is a  suspended sentence on this one

Good one.

The Capital Steps did a parody like that a long time ago (before Trump was in the White House).

I saw them twice (2006 and 2012). The first time, they performed that song (which I think was the title track from the album that they released that year). The title would certainly apply now!

Have seen them many times and have several albums-including that one. The problem with their albums-as funny as they are, they get dated very quickly. They don't really age very well.

I don't think I've ever seen/heard him tell the truth.

He's very much like our own Boris Johnson in that respect: both of them appear to believe that reality is whatever they want it to be, and get incredibly indignant when someone points out the actual world. It's hard to credit just why these people have such popular appeal: millions have voted for (and a remarkably high percentage appear to still support) these two, even though it's no secret that they're incapable of being honest.

But for both of them, the accusation of "lying" is much harder to make stick: a lie is a knowingly-told untruth, and neither of them care enough about the truth to know whether what they're saying is or not. For me, this makes them both so fundamentally untrustworthy they shouldn't be allowed to run anything that impacts anyone else, ever. It's disappointing that so many thing otherwise.

I definitely believe the Bible over the church-folks and their (mis)interpretation of the Bible. He definitely fits the bill as one of the false prophets, and closer to the anti-Christ than Christ himself. People actually have compared him to Jesus, and the Democrats are like modern day Pharisees.

From what I understand (disclaimer: IANAL), the prosecutor is using a somewhat novel application of the law.  Trump's team could drag the case out past the next election with endless appeals, all the way up to the Supreme Court.

The other cases against him are more straightforward, and, from a political perspective, much more damaging.

That the financial crimes would normally be a misdemeanour, but they've chosen to up the level by tying in that they were used to stop a story getting out prior to an election?

It's like a "Who wants to be a millionaire" scenario: "You have 34 misdemeanour counts in the bank - do you want to risk it all by doubling down to make them felony charges?"

The other cases against him are more straightforward, and, from a political perspective, much more damaging.

I'm truly surprised that the Georgia phone call has taken so long to get to court: with what is public knowledge, it seems that a charge of trying to influence an election official is undeniable (which Trump obviously knows, hence his hammering of it as "a perfect phone call, even more perfect than the one to Ukraine") - if he manages to run again without that (& his attempts to influence the results in Arizona) going through the courts, it will be like there has been no serious attempt to hold him to account whatsoever.

Here's hoping that what the NY action has done is provide a bit of backbone to those investigating other crimes.

I believe there are 34 charges against DT, so can that mean 34 appeals?

Well, that gives rise to a novel use of Rule 34...

I think that is the reason why they put the court date in Dec. That will give enough time to let these other cases-the one in Georgia & the DOJ for the classified documents to move forward. If those other cases come first, I think it will help the prosecution in this case. But, I'm no lawyer nor do I play one of t.v. What do I know?

There is another case, however, that WILL be in court on April 25th of this year. E. Jean Carroll is suing him for battery & defamation even though the rape case has been postponed indefinitely.

Leaks aren't relevant, though: that Trump has paid for charges to go away (e.g. for using his "charitable foundation" for his own personal spending - where other people have spent up to five years in prison for doing exactly that), this is in the public record. He is as a matter of record a proven criminal, multiple times over. Any normal (i.e. not rich, well-connected and white) person would have been imprisoned many times over. I'm not sure there's anyone else in government with such a proven record of criminality, whatever one might think of politicians.

They sure are doing everything they can to make sure he cant run again!!

"They"

...you mean Trump's former Attorney General, and an ever-growing list of people in the Republican Party including many he picked for their roles?

I've just heard Jim Jordan trying very desperately to defend Trump by arguing that what Trump said didn't mean the only thing that any rational person could possibly accept it as meaning. And bringing up Hillary's emails as a claim of "double standards", which is possibly the most laughable thing about it.

The most difficult part to come ISTM is going to be finding an untainted jury. It seems to me that on the one hand you'll have people who believe Trump can literally do no wrong irrespective of evidence, and on the other those who will already believe he's guilty. Anyone who listens to the news and actually hears Trump's words can only fall into the latter set: there is zero doubt whatsoever in my mind at least that he's bang to rights. Ain't no way there's going to be a verdict before the next election, though.

It'll be interesting to see for just how many Republicans in the intervening time whether the hypocrisy and cognitive dissonance trying to defend the indefensible becomes too much.

It feels bizarre listening to Chris Christie sounding like the adult in the room, though his "I made a mistake thinking I could teach Trump how to respect the constitution" seems massively self-serving.

But nothing like as bemused that anyone is still sticking up for the tantruming toddler: it has got so bad that Chris Christie is sounding like the grown-up in the room (it's about time that people on that side of politics over there started pointing out that Trump is behaving like a baby who has just had his favourite rattle taken away - should have happened years ago, though). Though he's still repeating lies about Hillary Clinton and seems to be trying to make out that she was just as bad as Trump is, and should have been similarly prosecuted.

In more than 100 years since its passage, few of the many cases brought under the US Espionage Act relate to what most people think of as espionage - individuals actually spying on behalf of a foreign nation.

Since becoming the first ex-US president to face federal charges, including 31 Espionage Act violations, an emerging Republican defence of Donald Trump is to argue that he should not be charged under the act because he is not a foreign spy.

He knows he did it, He just wants to avoid a situation that might get him jail time.

He can hardly deny he took the documents, or that he moved and tried to hide them in the face of a court subpoena rather than turning them over.

He seems to be trialling the defence of "I was allowed to do it", which I'm betting if there was even a scintilla of legal validity behind, this would never have been investigated, let alone come to an indictment. But.. it's very likely that the defence isn't for the legal court, but for the court of public opinion (or at least to keep his base onside and riled up to make it "public order" sort of dangerous for them to send him to prison). Even some of the less mindbogglingly stupid commentors on amiright repeat stuff that is completely made-up to try and make Trump seem less culpable (apparently that Mar a Lago toilet is not just a safe room, but a safe within a safe room.. and every one of Hillary's 30,000 deleted emails is an equivalent offence). There are none so blind as those who will not see.

He will NEVER fess up because he is incapable of admitting he did anything wrong. I think it was during one of his State of the Union addresses where he mistakenly called someone by the wrong name. I doubt it - the main reason he hasn't been found guilty in many of his previous trials is that he has settled - he's an admitted fraudster, non-payer of bills etc. ad nauseam. He's a crook, always was.

He has paid people off before things got to court if he realized he was going to lose.

Yeah, he's also coming up with stuff now that is blatantly unconstitutional, explicitly saying he's going to do what he is lying about being done to him (weaponizing the DoJ and going after political opponents - even most Republican candidates these days are somewhat sheepish at suggesting that the prosecutions against him are politically motivated), and the sheep who follow him think of themselves as "patriots" - putting the "riot" into "patriot", perhaps?

A president pardoning himself has certain constitutional ramifications, though as I understand it to accept a presidential pardon, you have to admit you did the crime, which is never going to happen for Trump.

But a president can only pardon federal crimes: the Georgia charges are state ones, so he couldn't pardon himself for those.

He'd probably be able to put in way more time in the office than he did first time around. Just not an Oval one. Though I think you left the "i" out ;-)

..but the time he spends on the golf course would probably be significantly reduced.

He's supposed to be turning himself in at the Fulton County jail in Atlanta on Thursday. It's especially big news locally since I live in the area. They said they aren't going to give him any special treatment either, and the Atlanta city folk type don't take too kindly to the likes of him.

There was a caricature in our local newspaper yesterday. In it a judge yelled at a convict that he's screwed up his life with many felonies and that the only career option for him left would be to become the president of the U S. :o

Yup.  ::)

He doesn't understand that accepting a pardon means you admit you are guilty. He just sees it as a "get out of jail free" card. Nixon didn't understand that until after he accepted his pardon and when he did, he was furious.

Not part of his criminal indictments, as I understand it, but what do people make of the judge's summary judgment regarding the Trump family's long-term fraudulent behaviour?

Is this their indisputably illegal behaviour finally catching up with them, or a "weaponised justice department"?

Have to admit, I did find their attempted defence of "oh, nobody should believe what we tell them. They should do their due diligence" somewhat baffling. But I guess it's hard to defend pretending ones properties are many times their actual size and value.

Why do banks continue to give him loans? Why do lawyers and contractors continue to work for him when he never pays them? And they are passing it off as Christianity. You have to believe and think 100% like them or you are considered "unsaved" and doomed to spend eternity in Hell, while they will all go to "Republican Heaven". In recent years their beliefs include that masks and vaccines for COVID are the devil and that Russia/Putin is the good one fighting against the evil Ukrainian nazis. Another word is cult. But it isn't just his worshippers. There are "sane" people who will do his bidding. Like I said before, banks who have continued to give him $$$, members of Congress who will say one thing about him in private and another in public, and lawyers who continue to do his bidding when they see his other lawyers not being paid and ending up in prison.

The Republicans could have gotten rid of him once & for all back in 2021 but they didn't have the cojones. Now they are wringing their hands trying to figure out how to get rid of the monster they created. They are trying to find a substitute for him going into the 2024 election and the rest of the candidates are a joke. I watch the Republican debate the other night and it was pretty much a shouting match. The didn't talk about pressing issues like the government shutdown that will happen as of midnight tonight. They were arguing about other pressing issues like who bought curtains. I'm not making that up. Tim Scott & Nikki Haley were arguing about curtains.

The Republican Party is a mess and they have no one to blame but themselves. There have been many who have left the party while others still call themselves Republicans but voted for and will vote for Joe Biden.

It would be incredibly, overwhelmingly hypocritical for the Supreme Court "originalists" to try and pretend that the drafters of the 14th Amendment were thinking of something completely different, so it somehow doesn't apply; or that states' rights which apply to things like abortion don't count here - it would take quite jawdropping double-standards.

So yes, I fully expect Alito, Thomas, etm. to overturn the Colorado ruling. Sigh.

For the US Supreme Court, I think it's more like an ethical expectation: nothing with the force of law. Otherwise Clarence Thomas would be in legal doodoo & probably in jail.

But having been raised to the highest court in the land, judges are expected to have the highest ethical standards and recuse themselves if they have any kind of personal interest in a case. And we've all seen how that has played out over the past few years.

Haven't a couple of states decided the other way?

It's kinda weird that a federal constitutional issue is being decided in individual states, and that partisan officials get to make the determination in some cases. If ever there were a case that should start and end in the Supreme Court, you might think this was it.  I can't wait to see what mental hoops the "constitutional literalists" are going to jump through to try and convince themselves that he should stay on the ballot: the language is as clear as any, and Trump's behaviour fits the description. It would be a truly delightful irony, though, if the judges he appointed decided he was ineligible. Not convinced Kavanaugh has the cojones to stand up to Trump, though. I guess we'll see before very long.

Technically, the states AGs are decided if he can be on the ballot for the Primary which is run at the state level. States run their own primaries which is why some have elections and some have caucuses. I am not too sure what will happen in Colorado & Maine if Trump becomes the GOP nominee if they can keep him off the ballot in Nov. since that is a Federal election and not a state one.

He was dumb enough to try the "I've never met her and she's not my type" defence, but when shown a photo that contained both E Jean Carroll and his wife at the time, misidentified one as the other.

The large majority of that 83mil are punitive damages. Which, IMHO, is very appropriate

From Trump's own court filings, it's looking very much like he pretended to have a $50m loan to avoid, or rather "evade", tax

That was one of those "well, duh" moments: the whole argument was bollocks (and extremely hypocritical bollocks, when you consider what Trump is talking about the "Biden crime family" - though that has always looked a great deal like projection to me)

Unfortunately, no. It was a chance for the GOP to get rid of Trump once and for all but Mitch McConnell is too much of a coward. Susan Collins of Maine said that she thought he learned his lesson but the lesson he learned was that he can get away with it.

Talk about Teflon Don. The guy has never been held accountable for anything in his life! EXCEPT now he has in the E Jean Carroll case. But he really should be in prison for what he did to her and other women.

I hope his comeuppance is coming.

And the shares in the so ironically named "Truth Social" - a company with a tiny pittance as revenue that has lost money consistently and shows no sign of ever making profit floated as though it is worth billions.. the brainless bought the shares initially to push the market cap over $10B, making him for a few days/weeks (on paper, at least) the billionaire he has always claimed to be. But with almost zero chance of turning that pretend money into the real stuff: if he were to try selling any significant portion of his shares, the share price would fall quicker than a ballistic missile on the second half of its trajectory. Way back in 1998 when Carlos & I took our first cross-country trip together. We stopped in Las Vegas for a few hours. We were in one casino and then I had a horrible thought. I thought that we might be in one of his casinos and I told Carlos that we should go to a different one. I don't know if it was one of his but it turned out it was a good move because I won $300 in a slot machine in the second casino (and bragging rights). Yup, back then before he came down the escalator,  & before The Apprentice, I couldn't stand him.

People have often wondered if William Shakespeare had any involvement in the most important writing project of his time, the translation  of the King James Bible.

William Shakespeare lived from 1564-1616.  The creation of the King James Bible began in the year 1610, the year in which Shakespeare would have been 46 years old.

If you turn to Psalm 46 in the King James Bible, and if you count exactly 46 words into the psalm, you find the word "shake."  If you count 46 words back from the end of that psalm, you will find the word "spear."

Most churches have prayer books which are available in a shelf on the back of the pews for the congregation to read. At least in the Episcopal Church, there is a thingy (to sure what it is called) on the wall that will have a list of the prayers that will be read. Usually it will just have a page number.

Parts of the Bible is usually read by individuals in the front of the church and not by the congregation. The Bible that is used is usually very big and not easily carried. It sits on the lectern either bookmarked or open to the page to be read.

And seeing as someone has already gone to prison for it, it's hard to argue no crime was committed.

From evidence so far, it looks to me like they have shown that it was intended to help his election prospects, and that Trump knew all about it. The only reason for finding him not guilty would be if the jury don't believe the witnesses.

Even if he is found guilty, he probably won't be sent to prison because of the Secret Service. He still has Secret Service protection and it would be difficult to provide him that service behind bars. They may put him on home confinement. Of course he will whine how it will interfere with his running for pres. And being convicted and even being in prison does not disqualify one from running or even becoming pres.

It was Donald. Stormy didn't want to but she believed she didn't have a choice. He was blocking her exit and his body guard was outside the door. It wasn't exactly rape but it was coerced-unconsentual.

Just to set the record straight, that's not what she told Bill Maher in an interview on his show in 2018. He reran it on his show last week and called her "a bad witness", I watched it myself. Look it up on HBO on Demand.

This is what she said in the 2018 interview with Bill Maher, reprinted here by the Toronto Times at https://torontosun.com/news/world/bad-witness-bill-maher-digs-up-old-stormy-daniels-interview-to-slam-her-testimony-in-trump-trial.

“You say it’s not a Me Too case,” Maher said to her during their sit-down six years ago.

“It’s not a Me Too case,” Daniels responded. “I wasn’t assaulted. I wasn’t attacked, or raped, or coerced or blackmailed.”

She continued: “They tried to shove me in the Me Too box to further their own agenda. And first of all, I didn’t want to be part of that because it’s not the truth and I’m not a victim in that regard.”

Maher said of the old footage, “That’s not what she’s saying now.”

Like I said, you can see her say all this on video on Real Time With Bill Maher. It's not what she says now. So either then or now she is lying.

If only there was a tape out there that proves that shows the evidence.

As Whoopi Goldberg might say, “it wasn’t like rape rape.”

Results are coming in

The jury has found former US President Donald Trump GUILTY of falsifying business records to conceal a hush-money payment made to former porn star Stormy Daniels.

Also guilty on counts 2, 3, 4 and 5

Edited to add

That's Guilty!  Guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty!

What happens next?  He's scheduled to be sentenced July 11.  Will there be an appeal?  Almost certainly.  How will all this affect the election?  Who knows.

This is probably the greatest day in the history of the American Criminal Justice System. We all knew from day one he was guilty, and now the jury has made it official.

These are the lowest level of felony, and only ten percent of them ever lead to jail time. But with 34 charges, bad behavior and gag order violations, Donny might spend a little time behind bars.

Now we'll see how much jail time he'll get.

Well, he can and will appeal it so nothing was really done today except symbolism. At this point I'm not even sure it will hurt him. Reality doesn't seem to be important in US elections anymore it's just us vs them...

Of course he will appeal. As for going to jail, that might be tricky because of the secret service but it could be done. Most likely, he will be on home confinement but probably won't be too much of a punishment for him. He will have to sit at Mar-A-Largo while his minions will all go to kiss his ring. Oh wait, they already do that.

We will have to wait until July 11th for the sentencing. In the meanwhile, he is free to go anywhere and do anything. The fly in the ointment could be the Supreme Court. They could rule that he could be immune to be held accountable for anything but if they do, I think SCOTUS will be entering dangerous territory but that is another issue.

Uh, how about the fact that he hasn't been sentenced yet? And then there will be an appeal. Due process must play.

Maybe that'll pay for some better lawyers for his appeal

I know there's speculation that Donald directed his defence team, but of all the potential holes in the prosecution's case, they cunningly navigated around all of them. Based on what was presented in court, I don't think any other verdict was possible
