Sidewinders are heat seekers. Not suitable for a balloon unless it's a hot air balloon which I find rather unlikely. I assume they used a radar guided AMRAAM.

I read somewhere that sometime in the 1980's the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America built a space laser and had it sent up on the Space Shuttle, and every year on the 4th of July all the Lutherans in Minnesota gather early in the morning in a state park just outside of Brainerd and spend all day filling an empty swimming pool full of several tons of ground beef, tater tots, and cream of mushroom soup. Then at 5 pm one of the church elders pushes a button that activates the space laser which beams down into the swimming pool and cooks the mixture into the world's largest hotdish.
