But the thing is the media chose to over report it for days if not weeks, hence why it might be something it will be remembered for even if we don't want to.

She mainly focused on her Early 2010's songs like the ones with David Guetta and Calvin Harris. The only song she performed that was from before 2010 besides Umbrella was the song with Jay-Z. I was thinking S.O.S. and Pon De Replay would have been in the lineup. But more than her songs, the highlight of it was the announcement of her pregnancy and the raised glass platforms.

There are some doubts among us that a Rhianna performance or a Rhianna pregnancy is something 2023 will be remembered for at some point down the line among people in future times.  And it certainly won't be remembered in the same breath as Prince's VERY memorable 2007 half time performance. (And, unlike Rhianna, Prince actually sang live and didn't fake it). I notice that people have started using these "what 2022 will be remembered for", "what 2023 will be remembered for" etc topics as catchalls for anything, memorable or otherwise,  that happens to be happening in the 24 hour news cycle.

I did notice that you said "potentially Rihanna's SB Halftime show" which indicates you do have some degree of perspective.

I put potentially in case it does for some reason become something that stays in the news tabloids/social media even though it's doubtful. Aside from Prince in 2007 the only Halftime show that is remembered is the 2004 one because of the JT and Janet Jackson incident, for the similar reason that the Oscars of 2022 will be remembered. I like to note everything with potential as time progresses and then list the noteworthy news events/pop-culture trends usually at the end of each quarter, and then just exclude the ones that won't be remembered after about a week or so. Also when I make my final list at the end of the year, not necessarily everything from the quarterly lists make it to that one.

Now that we're nearing the end of the first quarter, here's what I think we have so far:

- Turkey/Syria earthquake
- The Chinese balloon and other flying objects
- The train derailment/toxic spill in Palestine, OH
- The Nashville Covenant School shooting (possibly, it has been compared to Uvalde but not as large of a scale. Also incidents like these are becoming like hurricanes or tornadoes, increasing in frequency and thus becoming less novel)
- Possibly the storms in California and how much snow they got
- M3GAN (instant cult classic)
- The Last of Us
- Miley Cyrus' Flowers
- ChatGPT

Now that the first half of 2023 has ended, looking back there hasn't really been much that screams "2023", at least not in the way that 2022 is associated with the war in Ukraine, or 2020 with COVID, or even 2021 had January 6. It's not necessarily a bad thing, it just means it hasn't been as crazy as the past few years. This year has been eventful with mass shootings and climate disasters, but nothing really novel that we haven't been seeing before.

Here is the list of what I think the year would be remembered for so far from the first half:

Trump Indictment
Canadian wildfires and the smoke from them in the Eastern US
The Titan implosion
Turkey/Syria earthquake
The Chinese balloon and other flying objects
Potentially the Paris riots (there was a similar situation in the fall of 2005 that's not really remembered, so unsure whether this would follow suit or not)
Bud Light and Dylan Mulvaney
ChatGPT
Music: Morgan Wallen, "Flowers" by Miley Cyrus, "Kill Bill" by SZA, Coi Leray, Ice Spice
Movies: M3GAN, Super Mario Bros, The Little Mermaid, Barbie, The Flash
TV/Streaming Series: The Last of Us

The 14th Amendment does not allow colleges to discriminate on the basis of race.
Constitutional protections for Freedom of Speech do not allow the State to force creative workers to produce materials (in this case, websites) that violate their religious beliefs.

And curiously, some people are up in arms about it…

Supposedly Summer 2023 will be known as the "Barbie Girl Summer", sort of the new take on "hot girl summer". The pink colored fashion and aesthetics are everywhere including on social media, and the songs from the soundtrack are in the charts like the Nikki Minaj/Ice Spice remake of the Aqua song, as well as "Dance the Night Away" by Dua Lipa who is also co-starring in the film. Also the "this Barbie" memes were around since the beginning of the year.

End of Q3 update. Not much to add but can modify the list above:

- Trump indictment can add an "s" since he's up to 4 now.
- In addition to the Canadian wildfires, the fires in Greece and Maui, and it was a hot summer
- In addition to the Turkey/Syria earthquake, the one in Morocco
- Probably not the Paris riots
- Barbie is the movie and the Barbiecore trend that screams "2023". Probably not the Little Mermaid or the Flash, but we can add Oppenheimer.
- For music we can add "Snooze" by SZA, and possibly Olivia Rodrigo's sophomore album which includes the hit songs "Vampire" and "Bad Idea Right?"
- The WGA strike can be added for sure, and potentially the auto workers strike
- Twitter's rebranding to X, and potentially IG's Threads

But the January 6th event was from that date in 2021. Still, him being indicted for it is something that happened this year, so I suppose it makes sense to mention it here. In fact, all of his indictments occurred this year.

That's actually 2022. It may still be continuing through 2023 although it's calmed down a lot, but still the occasional attack mostly in the eastern part of the country. It's just like how 2020 is remembered for the COVID pandemic which is also still around.

I think what you're saying is this thread is meant for new events, not for events carried over from previous years? Maybe a way around that is to say something like "the continuing war in Ukraine" or "the continuing Covid panemic" if, in fact, these events remain in the news.

That is true that they are still in the news even though they aren't as novel as when they first started, and maybe not top headlines. At the same time I was thinking there were particular turns of the Ukraine War that were unique to 2023, such as the Prigozhin incident and his subsequent death. Regarding the COVID pandemic, one turn of it that was unique in 2021 and I believe it was mentioned in the thread for that year is the vaccination.

Overall, when it comes to continuing long term events it seems to be associated with the years they began. One example is the Iraq War and how 2003 is remembered for it.

Here is CNN's annual year in pictures, and like every year it summarizes the year as being a tragic one with the Israel/Hamas conflict, earthquakes and fires, mass shootings, and all the fiascos in US politics including the SOTH and Trump's indictments. But at least there was the Barbie movie and Taylor Swift and Beyonce's tours.

Personally I'd give it about a 6.5/10. Not too terrible but not great either. My vacation to Europe in the summer is what gave it bonus points and something to remember, and the Zelda game that I played around that time. The pop-culture was pretty good at least for music and movies, even though the Writers/Actors strike caused a delay in TV/Streaming series. I just passed 100 songs on my Spotify playlist which is a new record, and about double my average number of songs from the other years playlists, though nothing on the level of Beyonce's Renaissance album which was an exception to an otherwise bland year for music. With movies there were a lot of good ones but just none on Top Gun: Maverick's level, which was also an exception to a year that didn't have a lot of good movies. Overall 2023 was a lot better than 2022.

I feel the same too, I wouldn't rate it too high just somewhere in the middle, first 6 months were OK for me then I wound up with a foot injury around July that kept me out of work for a month and a month later I was back at work.

Why can't they just call "rizz" for what it is, mojo. No need to make up a new word for it.

The problem with "cheugy" is that it sounds like matter expectorated  from the nose or throat. Anyone using it risks sounding disgusting and definitely does not have rizz.

Because it's apparently "gnarly" and "radical" (I still use those vernaculars) for Gen Z.

Honestly I'm not sure if it will be as remembered on this side of the pond, at least not as much as when he ascended to the throne after Elizabeth II's death, which happened in 2022 and thus what that year will be remembered for.

Now that it's the last day of 2023, here is my final list:

- Israel/Hamas War. Undoubtably the top story of the year and didn't happen until Q4
- Barbie. The thing that really screamed "2023" especially during the summer months.
- Trump Indictments. Especially his mug shot that went viral.
- Wildfires in Canada, Greece, and Maui
- The Turkey/Syria earthquake
- The Chinese weather balloon
- The WGA/SAG strike
- ChatGPT and AI taking over
- Twitter rebranding to X, and IG's threads
- Bud Light and other boycotts
- It was a big year for Taylor Swift as she was Time Magazine's POTY. She had the holdover song "Karma" from her late 2022 album, plus her "Cruel Summer" song from 2019 was on top of the charts, and her Eras Tour film. It was also a big year for Beyonce with her Renaissance movie and tour of the same name and same namesake as her 2022 album.
- Movies: Oppenheimer (same day as Barbie and created the phenomenon "Barbenheimer"), Super Mario Bros, The Little Mermaid, M3GAN, Hunger Games prequel, Wonka
- Music: Morgan Wallen, "Flowers" by Miley Cyrus, "Kill Bill" and "Snooze" by SZA, Coi Leray, Ice Spice, Doja Cat's "Paint the Town Red", "Vampire" and "Bad Idea Right?" by Olivia Rodrigo
- TV/Streaming: The Last of Us
- Gaming: Zelda Totk and Super Mario Bros Wonder, Baldur's Gate 3

I think that's it. As always please feel free to add anything. See you in 2024!
