Although this song was in the charts in December 2022 from her new album, SOS (which is also really good btw), as most songs released that time of year are considered the following year's song so that said I think this will be classified as a 2023 song:

There's not even a hint of originality anymore in "youth" music.

A lot of it is great! Music's always evolving, there are definitely distinguishable trends going on rn. Most of the new stuff is more cinematic and dynamic in song structure

It's not about the quality of "new" music, it's the fact it's all rehashing old styles over and over, there's no distinct aesthetic Zeitgeist like there was throughout the decades of the 20th century, it's just a post-modern closed loop. There's a guy named Kurt Andersen who called out the stylistic stagnation in a 2012 article called "you say you want a devolution" that really hits the nail on the head.
The 21st century so far has produced no genuinely new music styles or aesthetic movements, think of all the new aesthetic movements emerging between 1900 and 1920 alone, cubism, the futurist, dada, art deco, ect. Think of all the new subcultural movements in music that emerged between 1970 and 1990, nothing even close compares post-2000.

I'm 37 and most of what's popular sounds like generic versions of the stuff I heard as a kid. If you're too young to remember the 80s or 90s then I can understand how it sounds fresh, but I can also understand how people older than me find it even more boring than I do.
But I listen mostly to underground/fringe mainstream Hip Hop and R&B, which is in a pretty good place right now, so I don't have much to complain about.

He was surprised as he says violin strings usually break, but bows do not.
The broken bow was immediately swapped for a different one and Mr Jackiw carried on as if nothing happened.

Is it just me or did music really hid a dud this quarter? The first quarter had a lot more good songs and albums but nothing really good this quarter except for Morgan Wallen if you even call that good. Ed Sheeran's "-" album is just ok, and same with Jack Harlow's "Jackman." album. We'll have to see how the summer months go but so far I don't see anything promising to be on the level of Beyonce's RENNAISANCE or Harry's House like last summer. So far this year the closest album to that level is "Red Moon in Venus" by Kali Uchis. It's a nice album to chill to.

Last year (summer), I noticed that "Running Up That Hill" by Kate Bush overshadowed nearly every other song that was popular or a hit. The only other song that seemed as big up until "Anti-Hero" was "About Damn Time."
Harry Styles seemed like he wasn't doing his songs as "big" as his previous album, which featured monster hits "Adore You" and "Watermelon Sugar," plus "Golden." (Like, imagine if Michael Jackson had followed up Thriller with Invincible.) Beyonce was just kind of there.
One of my favorites last year (besides the obvious one) was "Numb Little Bug," especially because I relate to it so much, particularly the chorus.
2022 was the year of the resurrected hit. In addition to Kate Bush's Stranger Things-fueled smash, we also got "Unstoppable" by Sia (fueled by a commercial), "Die for You" by The Weeknd, "Sweater Weather," "Bloody Mary," and "Heat Waves" finished a lengthy (Record?) chart run. And even this year, Miguel's "Sure Thing" has been resurrected.
There have also been a lot of samples, like "Big Energy" ("Genius of Love"), "Creepin'" ("I Won't Wanna Know"/"Boadicea"), "I'm Good (Blue)" (Yes, "Da Ba Dee"), "Baby Don't Hurt Me" (Yes.), "Playaz" ("The Message"), and "Alone" by Kim Petras ("Better Off Alone").
"Creepin'" is a favorite of mine so far this year. Probably the most I've listened to Enya in ages.

Unfortunately this year is mostly a continuation of last year. I did like Harry's House, I thought of it more as the equivalent to Justin Timberlake's FS/LS album which followed his Justified album, and "As It Was" was like the "SexyBack". I never listened to Harry Styles' Fine Line album but I did like the "Adore You" song. "Running Up the Hill" was a good one and an earworm last summer while binge watching Stranger Things.
Samples and less originality seems to be the thing now, especially ones that have been sampled many times before like the Grandmaster Flash song which was sampled by Ice Cube, then P Diddy, and a few others. Reminds me of last year when Latto's song "Big Energy" was popular, which sampled "Genius of Love" by Tom Tom Club which was also sampled by Mariah Carey's "Fantasy".
This year's music so far seems to be dominated by Gen Z or Gen Z audience targeting artists like Ice Spice, Latto, and Coi Lerai. There's also been a lot of country in in the charts, not just Morgan Wallen but also Bailey Zimmerman, Luke Combs, and a few others.

Four songs from the Eurovision Song Contest have charted in the UK top 10 simultaneously for the first time.
Loreen's Tattoo, which won the 2023 competition for Sweden, scored this week's highest new entry at number two.
Finland's Cha Cha Cha by Käärijä, which placed second in the contest, landed at number six, becoming the first fully-Finnish language song to chart.
I Wrote a Song by the UK's Mae Muller and Queen of the Kings by Norway's Alessandra reached number nine and 10.
Muller's track performed poorly at this year's contest, finishing in second-last place, but the song has enjoyed strong support from UK radio stations.
The Official Charts Company said the last and only other time two or more Eurovision songs have been in the top 10 at the same time was in 1982.

The Official Charts Company said the last and only other time two or more Eurovision songs have been in the top 10 at the same time was in 1982.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-65647557
Some of my favorites were:
"Who the Hell is Edgar" by Teya & Salena (Austria)
Loreen "Tattoo"
Croatia
Moldova
Australia
Alessandra "Queen of Kings" (Norway)
"My Sister's Crown" (Czech Republic)
"Unicorn" (Israel)
Finland
Albania
Georgia (Kate Bush "Wuthering Heights" vibes)
Ukraine
Estonia
And speaking of Kate Bush, it looks like she might end up with another Netflix-fueled belated/resurrected hit. "This Woman's Work" was synced in the new J Lo movie The Mother.

Subject: “We Are the World” to Get Modern Multi-Country Reimagining
Written By: Voiceofthe70s on 06/14/23 at 9:24 am
In another instance of the entertainment industry revealing that they are completely out of fresh ideas, they are resurrecting this old fossil:
“We Are the World” to Get Modern Multi-Country Reimagining
https://americansongwriter.com/we-are-the-world-to-get-modern-multi-country-reimagining/
Excerpts:
The 1985 charity single, “We Are the World,” which rallied 47 superstar talents around famine and disease relief in Africa is set to get a modern-day reimagining as “We Are the World NOW.”
Proposed as a live recorded and televised event, “We Are the World NOW” will be going international with recordings of the song coming in from Korea, China, Japan, Australia, England, Italy, France, Germany, Brazil, Mexico, Spain and one or more African countries, according to Billboard.
Once an anthem meant to aid the ongoing famine in Ethiopia, the song now will be devoted to fighting hunger on a global scale. “A percentage of the revenue from the sale of the recordings and associated products will be split between a noted charity in each country devoted to ending world hunger and a third-party charity devoted to the same goals on a global basis,” a statement read.
While it would seem the motive is an honorable one, are current artists so bereft of new ideas that they have to dig up the old carcass of this song? I thought we left these schlocky all-star pseudo-anthems like "We Are The World" and "Do they Know It's Christmas" behind in the 80s. The 80s were full of this type of thing. Does anyone remember the awful "Hands Across America"? I doubt it. Let's refresh your memory. You can even play "spot the forgotten 80s stars":

An accurate recollection.
The original concept, if I recall, was to have one long, unbroken chain across the entire US, which is undoable. There are natural barriers, among other things. So it ended up being little groups of people here and there. It was a momentary feel-good thing.

Reminds me of the National Wave event that Hulk Hogan was promoting in 2007 into 2008.
The idea was that people all across the country would in unison wave their specialty-made “Uniting Towels” for 15 minutes, to unite the country. Read a press release, “From border to border, coast to coast and beyond, people of all ages, colors, creeds and political affiliations will be waving the Official Uniting Towel of America in unison.” After the kickoff, the plan for publicity was to put feuding celebrities together, like Rosie O’Donnell and Donald Trump, and say that if they could get together, so could the rest of the country. 8)

But somehow it never came to pass. There is a Uniting Towel up for sale on eBay. Maybe one of these days it will be a collectors item. ;D

Tony Christie, known for singing Is This The Way To Amarillo, has teamed up with Music For Dementia and released a new song.
Tony Christie said a new re-recorded version of the song Thank You For Being A Friend has been made to thank carers who “never get mentioned”.
The musician, 80, recorded the song for Music For Dementia’s Thank You Day campaign, alongside a line up of singers and producers including Sting, Nile Rodgers, Graham Gouldman and Graeme Pleeth.
Speaking about why the song was made, the Is This The Way To Amarillo singer said: “It’s to raise awareness and it’s also to thank the carers…
“Basically, the song is for the carers to say thank you for being a friend to the dementia sufferers.”
Thank You For Being A Friend will form the centrepiece of celebrations for this year’s Thank You Day, an event organised by Music For Dementia to honour carers, on July 2.

It was MTV that introduce reality tv shows with the likes of "The Real World", which format spurned "Big Brother". Yes utter garbage, and no music videos being shown?

No music videos, or a very negligible amount at best. This is not the 1980s, and many artists don't even bother with videos in the old sense in this day and age of TikTok, YouTube, etc. Why would they? It's not the thing anymore. Let me repeat again, the VMA's are a TOTEM TO THEIR OWN IRRELEVANCE.

The only things I bother with on MTV anymore are the Movie (and TV) Awards, VMAs and the rare music-related thing, such as Unplugged. The last music thing I remember them airing were Tony Bennett's Unplugged episodes after he died.
The first half of the VMAs this year was mostly good. The NSYNC reunion was epic, and Taylor fangirling over them. One of Nicki Minaj's songs, "Last Time I Saw You," was surprisingly good. Can't say the same for her next song, "Big Difference." (But still way better than "Super Freaky Girl." Her "better" song for me is "Superbass.") Shakira was epic! She defies age. Are you sure hips don't lie? ;D

Meanwhile Kyle Minogue's new album just released on Friday and it's pretty good. It has plenty of good songs aside from "Padam Padam".

This one reminds me of the island dancehall sound that was popular in 2015:
Dancehall/Island Dancehall:
Dancehall is a genre of Jamaican popular music that originated in the late 1970s. Initially, dancehall was a more sparse version of reggae than the roots style, which had dominated much of the 1970s. In the mid-1980s, digital instrumentation became more prevalent, changing the sound considerably, with digital dancehall (or "ragga") becoming increasingly characterized by faster rhythms. Key elements of dancehall music include its extensive use of Jamaican Patois rather than Jamaican standard English and a focus on the track instrumentals (or "riddims").
Dancehall saw initial mainstream success in Jamaica in the 1980s, and by the 1990s, it became increasingly popular in Jamaican diaspora communities. In the 2000s, dancehall experienced worldwide mainstream success, and by the 2010s, it began to heavily influence the work of established Western artists and producers, which has helped to further bring the genre into the Western music mainstream.

I'm sorry to fly off on a tangent here, and maybe I'll start a topic about this, but can you specify what you mean by "futuristic"? People have thrown that word around here, and almost inevitably they mean the 1950s and 960s "Jetsons" sort of conception of what the future would be. A "future that is now outdated" so to speak.
It's almost as if the term "futuristic", as used here, has come to mean that OLD idea of the future, as opposed to a projection of the way the ACTUAL future might be, which is likely to be far more dystopian. And probably quite unmusical.

My personal definition, especially in regards to this particular album is it reminds me of the type of music you would hear in a sci-fi/cyberpunk type of film that is set in the future. At the same time it has some songs that make you feel like you're in a dreamscape paradise. Anyhow, if you were to hear this album not knowing who it is, you would never guess in a million years that it's Andre 3000 from Outkast. I'd recommend a listen. It's good for relaxation anyways.

That makes sense. At least the cyberpunk future is a bit of an update (for better or worse) from the old, outdated Jetsons/flying car/jetpack/shiny silver outfits vision of the future from the late 50s/early 1960s. Yet, whenever that motif shows up, people still call it "futuristic". Go figure.

The singer has paid a €7.5m (£6.5m) fine - prosecutors had wanted to jail her for eight years and fine her €23.8m (£20.8m) if found guilty.
She had faced tax fraud allegations for €14.5m (£12.7m) in a Barcelona court.
Shakira, who has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, said she settled "with the best interest of my kids at heart".

The English National Opera has chosen Manchester as its new headquarters, a year after it was told to leave London or lose its Arts Council funding. The historic company also had Birmingham, Bristol, Liverpool and Nottingham on its relocation shortlist. Arts Council England controversially threatened to axe its annual £12m grant if it did not leave the capital. After the move in 2029, the ENO will however continue to own and perform at its current home, the London Coliseum.

Christmas has come early in the UK charts as almost three quarters of songs in the top 40 are festive tunes. Wham!'s Last Christmas has topped the singles chart for the fourth time, followed by Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas Is You in second place. A week after the death of The Pogues singer Shane MacGowan, Fairytale of New York has risen to number four. It still has time to reach the top spot for the first time, with two weeks until Christmas number one is revealed. Released in 1987 and featuring Kirsty MacColl, the track originally peaked at number two, being narrowly beaten to festive first place by the Pet Shop Boys' Always On My Mind.

That song just set another new record for the most number of weeks at the #1 spot. 37 total, non-consecutive.
