Subject: 2023: The year in film
Written By: batfan2005 on 12/09/22 at 2:07 pm
I thought it's not too early to start this topic as the movie lineup slated for release should be for the most part on schedule as the "COVID shuffle" should be pretty much over now. Here are the movies in my watchlist:
Super Mario Bros
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One
Shazam! Fury of the Gods
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts
The Little Mermaid
Wonka
Star Trek 4
TMNT: Mutant Mayhem
Peter Pan & Wendy
The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes
The Marvels
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves
Fast X
The Flash
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (this one will probably be another Kingdom of the Crystal Skull if not worse, but I'll still watch it)
Dune: Part Two
It's looking like it's going to be a great year for movies, the best since 2019 if not better than that.

Sorry, but the only one on your list that has any appeal to me is the Indiana Jones, and, as you say, it will probably disappoint. Guess I'll stick to my old favorites, maybe a Bogie splurge

This is not really a matter of this year’s film slate, but I’d love to see my 2 new favorite sci-fi action heroes, Diego Luna (Andor) and Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian, The Last of Us) co-star in something epic this year or next. That would make my year.

Filming for the latest Star Wars series has been cancelled amid landslip concerns. The set in Dorset is to be used for the latest Disney+ Star Wars series, Andor. The series is a prequel to the 2016 spin-off film Rogue One, and follows main character Cassian Andor. A National Trust spokeswoman confirmed filming had been cancelled because of safety concerns. Film crews previously used the site for filming two years ago and had been expecting to resume.

Also I watched Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 on Friday. It was ok overall, but I liked the first two better especially the 2nd one. It's seems to be the common thing with "Three-quels".

There's honestly something to be said for the Johnny Depp version as well. I didn't think I would like it, but I have seen it several times now. Pay special attention to the music. Each song has a very specific genre. Techno, 1960s Byrds-inspired, etc. Much better than that silly "oompa loompa dilly dally day" song that is repeated over and over in the original.

Yes, that's the one. Pretty psych-o-delic. :D

Correct. Written by famed author Roald Dahl. Speaking of whom...the woke police, this time in the guise of publishers Puffin Books, a division of Penguin Random House, ever on the lookout for new and better things to be offended by, have censored his books. "Charlie & The Chocolate Factory" is among the casualties:
Roald Dahl rewrites: edited language in books criticised as ‘absurd censorship’
www.theguardian.com/books/2023/feb/20/roald-dahl-books-rewrites-criticism-language-altered
Excerpts:
Critics are accusing the British publisher of Roald Dahl’s classic children’s books of censorship after it removed colourful language from works such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Matilda to make them more acceptable to modern readers.
A review of new editions of Dahl’s books now available in bookstores shows that some passages relating to weight, mental health, gender and race were altered. The changes made by Puffin Books, a division of Penguin Random House, first were reported by Britain’s Daily Telegraph newspaper.
Augustus Gloop, Charlie’s gluttonous antagonist in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which originally was published in 1964, is no longer “enormously fat,” just “enormous”. In the new edition of Witches, a supernatural female posing as an ordinary woman may be working as a “top scientist or running a business” instead of as a “cashier in a supermarket or typing letters for a businessman”.
The word “black” was removed from the description of the terrible tractors in 1970s The Fabulous Mr Fox. The machines are now simply “murderous, brutal-looking monsters”.
Booker prize-winning author Salman Rushdie was among those who reacted angrily to the rewriting of Dahl’s words. Rushdie lived in hiding for years after Iran’s Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989 issued a fatwa calling for his death because of the alleged blasphemy in his novel The Satanic Verses. He was attacked and seriously injured last year at an event in New York state.
“Roald Dahl was no angel but this is absurd censorship,’’ Rushdie wrote on Twitter. “Puffin Books and the Dahl estate should be ashamed.’’
The changes to Dahl’s books mark the latest skirmish in a debate over cultural sensitivity as campaigners seek to protect young people from cultural, ethnic and gender stereotypes in literature and other media. Critics complain revisions to suit 21st century sensibilities risk undermining the genius of great artists and preventing readers from confronting the world as it is.

If it gets nominated. The release date will be too close to the Oscar's so it would be in the 2025 one.

Nope. I'll wait until it ("Barbie") becomes available for streaming.
We saw "Barbie" last Saturday, for it was National Cinema Day, and all tickets in all cinemas was £3, and it was a family viewing. We all enjoyed it, and like the other film references contain within it.

Barbie has officially become the year's biggest box office hit, after the doll's big-screen earnings overtook the Super Mario Bros Movie's total. The Barbie movie, which sees Margot Robbie's titular toy swap her pink fantasy home for the real world, has now made $1.38bn (£1.1bn) globally. That has taken it past the $1.36bn taken by the Super Mario Bros Movie. Barbie has also helped the US summer box office reach the $4bn (£3.2bn) mark for the first time since the pandemic.

Critics have admitted their surprise at the high quality of the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film.
I finally watched it yesterday. It was pretty good overall. It had a good voice cast and a lot of pop-culture references.
I also watched Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse recently. That one was ok. I just thought some of the scenes were long and drawn out.

The hotly-anticipated Barbie movie had its premiere on Wednesday night in London's Leicester Square. The film stars Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, and follows the pair as they leave Barbie Land behind and travel to the human world. It was directed by Greta Gerwig, and will be out in cinemas on 21 July.
I am not rushing to see it.

I just didn't remember that reply. I had to go back and saw it was on page 5 from September. I just reposted from July around when the movie first came out. Yeah, I did like the make up/wardrobe and aesthetics for the movie. I also couldn't help but notice some similarities to Enchanted and Elf, especially with the latter having the same actor.

It was the similarity with "2001: A Space Odyssey" right at the beginning that had me liking the film right from the start (Kubrick being on of my favourite film directors).

Yes, I noticed that as well and that's been one of my favorite movies. Also the transition from Barbie Land to the Real World is what reminded me of Elf during his journey from the North Pole to NYC.
Anyhow I noticed it wasn't a movie for kids with the dialogue being full of innuendos and double entantres, particularly Ken's (Ryan Gosling) lines "I will beach you off".
Overall watching the movie and hearing the soundtrack, especially Dua Lipa's song brought back vibes of the summer.

"Eyes Wide Shut" is one of my favorites by Kubrick. But here's what you have to do to truly get the effect. After you have watched it once or twice or even three times, you have to watch it again, JUST to watch everything going on in the background, hanging on the walls, in the mirrors, on the TVs, etc, etc. This is harder to do than you think, because the eye keeps getting drawn back to the main characters and the main action. Especially with hi watt stars like Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman who command the attention. You have to concentrate just to see all the other stuff.

Sir Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and the families of John Lennon and George Harrison have all granted permission and music rights for the four films. The Oscar-winning director said he was "honoured to be telling the story of the greatest rock band of all time". He added that he was "excited to challenge the notion of what constitutes a trip to the movies". The films, made by Sony Pictures and Sir Sam's Neal Street Productions, will be released in cinemas in 2027.
