She did ok in the role but not great. She pushed herself as far as she could go but I'm sure there are many, many others who would done a so much better job. I think the movie pretty much failed because of her performance (not to mention rewriting some things for her). But, it is really hard to compare anyone to the GREAT Patti LuPone.

Exactly. It is better for an artist to remain true to themselves and what they do best, even if it goes against the prevailing trends. In this way they become timeless rather than trying to keep up with the times and  looking like a joke. The problem with Madonna is I'm not sure she ever had a "true self". She was always kind of a phony creation, even though she created the phoniness herself.
