Subject: When was the last time you used physical media for a movie/show, music, game?

Written By: Braeden on 04/28/22 at 5:19 pm

As most media is digital or streaming now, how long ago was the last time you used physical media for (or do you still regularly use it):

A movie or TV show (DVD, Blu-Ray, or VHS)?

Music (CD, Cassette, or Record)?

Video game (If you play video games)?

Movie or TV show - maybe like 2 years ago?
Music - Like 6 months ago - sometimes use CDs in car
Video game - Still use physical games regularly

I still use physical media regularly, of all of those kinds. Probably DVDs more than anything else, but also vinyl records on occasion.

We watch DVDs from time to time. I also listen to CDs A LOT! Well, I used to listen to a CD when I did the dishes but lately, I have been doing the dishes early in the morning before Carlos gets up so, I keep it quiet. In the car, we listen the audiobook of Harry Potter that is on a flashdrive.

Last time I remember using it was Easter weekend when I watched Passion of the Christ on DVD. Now last time I purchased, that's a different story. One recent exception was FIFA 2022 for the Nintendo Switch (the only physical game I have for it).

I only listen to music on physical media. CDs, albums and cassettes.

I utilize DVDs as well (and have some favored old VHS tapes as well, though I pull them out a lot less than I used to), but I do use streaming for movies & TV. Mostly vintage things on Tubi and Hulu, rather than Netflix's new programming, except their nature documentaries, which I do like.

DVD: Idiocracy, just last night
CD: today, coming home from classes
Video game: Spring break. I went on a rampage in Vice City on PS2.

I've only used them recently to digitize old home videos. I honestly can't remember when the last time I've used it was to actually consume content, maybe around 10 years ago? That was probably the last time I put a DVD into my laptop to watch a movie.  For CDs, even longer ago. Maybe 15 years ago..

I frequently use DVDs today.  I also use CDs, although lately it's more likely I just "rip" them to mp3s.  The same is more or less true with music on vinyl, but instead of "ripping" vinyl I "digitize" it using a converter device and Audacity.

It's been many years since the last time I used a VHS tape, Once in a while I'll use a CD to play music and also on occasions I'll play a video game.

About 2 years ago, I transferred my personal VHS tapes to DVD-my students preforming their play, a local talk show that I was on, and of course our wedding. Unfortunately, the VERY FIRST video that I created (that was shown on the local assess channel) was down in the basement and developed some mold.  :\'(  I found a place that would clean it up and they transferred it to a mp4 file so I do have a copy of it. But, I did transfer all the raw footage from that onto DVD.

Back in the '80s or '90s, my mother transferred all our old home movies from 16 mm to VHS. Then about 15 years ago or so, my brother transferred them to mp4 files. Included in those movies, is my stage debut at the age of 3.  :D ;D ;D

O0 It's great that all of those could be transferred.  They're precious.

DVD: Literally just the wee hours of this morning. It was Moonfall, which we rented from Redbox. It sucked. One of the worst movies I have ever seen in my life.

Blu-ray: Sonic the Hedgehog on April 11th. I loved it!

CD: Halsey's Badlands back in March, and Ariana Grande's My Everything on April 1st.

Vinyl: Dua Lipa's Future Nostalgia back in January. This was the last record I played before I brought my receiver up from the basement. (I need a phono preamp because the cable won't reach.)

VHS: The Santa Clause 2 in 2018, though I did put in The Absent-Minded Professor once, I think for TV calibration purposes.

Words on a page: An Audio Advisor catalog, of all things. I'm still in the middle of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and even before the whole thing with J.K. Rowling happened I never found the time to read it. I have plenty of books, comics and magazines waiting to be read (Hunger Games, Misery, the Halloween 2018 novelization, John Carpenter's Joker comic, Batman: Year One, the last issue of Mad Magazine). I have a bunch of Fangoria left to read starting from January 2019. My family/household/environment is crazy and often noisy, so it seems like the only time I can really do anything with any degree of peace, quiet, privacy and solitude is at night.... and even then! ;D

Yes, I'm a big physical media guy. When MP3/iPods/iTunes first became popular, I didn't see the appeal. "But what's wrong with CD's?" Now, I wasn't really an audiophile yet... that didn't happen until Blu-ray. (I have a lot of long speaker/headphone stories that are beyond the scope of this discussion.)

My streaming is pretty much as follows:

Movies/TV: Netflix, HBO Max. Sometimes: Tubi, Pluto, VOD (including Peacock). We do have Paramount Plus and my cousin has Hulu, but I haven't watched those yet. Sometimes a public domain or rare title (Aliens for Breakfast) on YouTube.

Music: YouTube.

I guess a lot of people still do use CDs and DVDs. I personally don't anymore. I have no need for them.

Funny timing. MovieWeb recently pondered whether home media was dead.

https://movieweb.com/is-home-media-dead-in-the-age-of-streaming/

Streaming has certainly made watching movies and TV shows much more convenient. So much so, that many think the idea of going out and buying a physical copy is silly and a waste of money. There is a large group of fans who says otherwise. In the eyes of many, physical media is practically extinct. However, the collection and viewing of physical media is still very much alive, but why? There are a number of reasons why physical media isn't as dead as many are led to believe.

That's interesting. It's dead in my life at least. I'm sure it will die in everyone else's sooner than later. CDs are even borderline retro for me.

I just listened to the 1981 album Assemblage by Japan on a vinyl record.
I recently watched the Liam Neeson movie Blacklight on Blu-ray
I am in the midst of playing the remastered (if you can even call it that) GTA Trilogy on Xbox One, and Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered on Nintendo Switch

My kind of people.

We listen to CDs everyday
And DVDs we do play
We believe in ownership
So nobody can take it away!

Touche, touche!

Just today I used 3 vinyl albums and 2 music CDs.  However, as I described before, I digitized the vinyl albums and ripped the CDs, with the output of each being mp3 files for my digital library.  (An ongoing project of mine, when I have a chance.)

Does this include going to the cinema to view a film?

If so, it was "Onward" several years back.

I no longer used my CDs, but are still available to listen too, but I still do not have speakers for the computer.

The last DVD I watched was the original movie version of "West Side Story", and I am frantically trying to find my copy of "The Shining" for the sequel is to be made soon available on Netflix.

I bought 3 second-hand concert DVDs online recently and have watched 1 so far. I don't watch my old DVDs very often - only a few times a year!

I think the last game I physically brought was Returnal for the PS5. Digital is much more convenient for gaming since you can play it on the fly.

I just bought Dick Tracy on Blu-Ray since it was only $8, vs paying $18 for digital as it wasn't available for streaming on any app.

The last Blu-ray I watched was Good Burger for its 25th anniversary.

The last three CDs I listened to were Metallica's Black Album, Rumours, and Pink Floyd's Animals.
