Subject: 2020 is like what 2000 would have been like if Y2K happened
Written By: Slim95 on 07/19/21 at 8:57 pm
Think about it, if Y2K happened, the economy would crash and there would be mass hysteria. Just as what happened with the pandemic in 2020. 2020 is like 2000 only if Y2K did happen. Funny thing is Y2K is a computer bug and Corona is viral bug.

The consequences of a cyber bug would be a lot different from a pandemic.
But if that did happen the early 2000s would be completely apocalyptic. Imagine that and then to follow it 9/11 and the Iraq war.

You mean if Y2K happened now instead of 20 years ago? I would say definitely mass hysteria, back then we didn't have smartphones so if it had happened today everything would be crazy. :o

Yeah but would 9/11 and the Iraq War still have happened? The timeline would have skewed into a tangent creating an alternate reality for the years that followed. Would Al Gore been elected instead, or will GWB have won in a landslide?

If Bush won then most likely would have still happened no matter what.

Not really. And it's just not because of the obvious differences between a massive computer bug and a viral pandemic. The most concerning thing over the Y2K "crisis" was how dates on computers would be inaccurate to the incoming year of 2000, but that wouldn't mean planes would fall out of the sky (they use different software and manual intervention to control them) or nuclear missiles would launch (same reason). Inaccurate dates on computers would've really been annoyances and computer engineers knew about the impending Y2k problem for years and worked on them relentlessly to fix any issues.
The most affected area would've been the financial sector due to things like bank statements showing massive interest, cancelled deposits from ATMs, and other nuisances. So while it would've caused significant financial disruption, it probably would've been fixed within weeks or months.
The early 2000s (except 2000) was dark though with 9/11 and the terrorism paranoia that came along afterwards, the Iraq War, Patriot Act, SCATANA, and the ongoing war on terror. So both "early" eras of the 2000s and the 2020s were similar in terms of bleakness, but as we've all experienced 2020, 2000 in hindsight felt like heaven on earth.

I agree that people had lots of advance warning about the potential dangers of Y2k. I recall at the job I was at, the IT people worked around the clock in the weeks leading up to 2000 to insure that everything continued to run smoothly. I might also add, there wasn't nearly as much "hysteria" surrounding it as people might now think. People took all the doomsday talk with a healthy grain of salt, and simply took precautions to be on the safe side.
