The Grammy-award winner’s comments come amid a growing national debate over cancel culture, the phenomenon of withdrawing support from public figures, celebrities, brands and businesses due to what some may consider to be offensive or problematic comments or ideologies.
In a recent Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll survey, 64 percent of respondents said there is a “growing cancel culture” that is a threat to their freedom, while 36 percent said they did not view it as a threat to their freedom.

There's nothing new about "cancel culture", just a new name. We use to call it "boycotting", like the boycott of Gallo wine back in the 60's in support of theb United Farm Workers' union

It's far more widespread, incendiary and indiscriminate now, due to social media. Gallo deserved to be boycotted because of their treatment of farm workers. I remember being at a Joan Baez concert where she endorsed this boycott and I agreed. It was an entirely legitimate protest. But today, somebody can get cancelled for a chance, offhand or misunderstood remark on Twitter. Or for something they said back in high school, even if it was 20 years ago. Literally! Careers ruined! Or even for simply refusing to follow the politically correct party line which is often presented now as the ONLY way to think, act or be. Much of this stems from the "zero tolerance" polices people grew up with in schools since the 90s, and which are also enforced in corporations. "One strike and you're out!". Zero tolerance and social media. A deadly combination.
