Subject: Electricity Power Rollouts in the US

Written By: Ripley on 02/15/21 at 4:57 pm

A big plan to save/fix power is happening in my country. Apparently it’s supposed to be off for only 30 minutes to an hour and then return. One neighborhood then another. Here’s the problem. One Customer said hers was off for 26 hours in a row. It was 56 Degrees where she lives. Imagine if that situation was to happen in one of the many areas where it’s close to if not below 0. No heat, no way to charge phones. It sounds like a safe plan to me... 😒 I’m honestly scared. I know that is is supposed be a helpful thing and maybe it works in most areas. But I’m worried about it failing in more areas.

My niece lives in the Dallas area and she said that her electricity has been off for 12 hours-and they are having super cold temps. She does have a fireplace so at least they are keeping warm.

My company has an operation in Oklahoma. Today they had 6” of snow on the ground and it was 3 degrees temperature. It’s bedlam down there. Mass paralysis.

I was at our Chicago operation today and the temperature was the same, just a little more snow. We were out doing donuts in the parking lots and having snowball battles.  ;D

Are you talking about the power outages? New York must have had a power outage and the lights on our router was off for a while so we waited till it came back on, it must have been the poles in the back of our backyard.

Why are they doing this? Are they working on replacing the poles and cabling? I know they were the cause of some of the fires in California.

Depends on where they are happening. I know parts of California have instituted rolling blackouts for years now. I also heard that in parts of Texas the wind turbines generating electricity by wind power have frozen. Nobody seems to have any backup plans for anything anymore in this country. A lot of things seem to be getting less efficient instead of more, for some reason. Speaking of blackouts, I'm old enough to remember the famed "Blackout of 65" when numerous US states and parts of Canada along the Eastern Seaboard were blacked out mysteriously. Although they later found out why, all sorts of urban legends flew around that it was caused by UFOs. That was more fun than the actual technical reason, which was something more mundane.  ;D Shortly thereafter, an episode of the then-popular TV show "Bewitched" did an episode based on the blackout called "The Short Happy Circuit of Aunt Clara" where they had the blackout caused by bumbling with Aunt Clara. A classic episode!

That's one of the many urban legends concerning that blackout.

If the electricity generating capacity has not increased in line with the demands for electricity then something will have to be done. I guess in part this is what is happening now.

I bet people are working from home, but all the office lights and computers are still on, even in buildings that are completely empty. So the demand has multiplied but there is no spare capacity.

Why are you apologizing? Did you cause these blackouts like Aunt Clara caused the Great Blackout of 65?

I really feel for all of those affected down there in Texas, I hope y'all stay safe and warm.  :\'(

Plus, Sen. Ted Cruz is an ass. Dude really flew to Cancun, Mexico with his family while his constituents were/still are freezing.

I understood it as that he was sorry for everyone caught in the power outage. But I might be wrong.
