Subject: NASA is on the alert for an asteroid set to pass close to Earth on Wednesday
Written By: Philip Eno on 04/27/20 at 2:36 pm
Nasa is on the alert for an asteroid set to pass close to Earth next week. The American space agency is constantly monitoring the space around us for asteroids that could pose a risk to life on Earth. Anything that comes within a certain range is deemed a Near Earth Object (NEO) and, in some cases, ‘potentially hazardous’. That’s the designation of asteroid 1998 OR2, which is set to pass by Earth on Wednesday, April 29. The asteroid will miss us by a distance of 0.04205 astronomical units (AU) or 3,908,791 miles. It seems like a long way off – it’s 16 times the distance to the moon – but in space terms it’s a near miss. It’s definitely close enough to be flouting galactic social distancing terms. Travelling at a speed of 19,461mph the asteroid measures a colossal 1.2 miles in diameter. That’s big enough to cause cataclysmic ‘global events’ if it did end up hitting Earth.

At this point, I wouldn't mind if it just hit us.

It looks like we'll be dodging another one. But only nearly. :(

I’m sure we have been dodging them on a regular basis forever. We just now have the technology to detect them.
Had the 1908 Siberia incident happened over any populated area it would have been one of the biggest disasters in modern history.

From one disaster to another?

Agreed, just end it already.

I read that it passed already. At like 16x the distance to the moon. Which is a comfortable distance away.
These are objects that have passed (or will pass) between the earth and moon. Looks like to have a chance of collision it had to be pass less than .1x the distance to the moon.

Which is the object set to pass this time of year 2029. And the earths gravity will pull it just enough to put it into a likely collision course in 2036. After it passes in 2029 they can see what’s happened to the orbit and then do their plan to nudge it to an orbit so it will safely pass when it comes back.

I hope we live till then. Now that we have a pandemic along with a global recession, who knows what 2029 will even look like? :-\\

Who knows? A passing asteroid could pass on more viruses on to planet Earth?
