Subject: The Early 2020s Started in Late 2019 Culturally

Written By: Slim95 on 04/26/20 at 11:56 pm

This is when Billie Eilish started to become huge, Post Malone released his track, Dua Lipa released her song, Harry Styles released his song, Tik Tok became huge, the first Corona Virus case was reported in China in November, and trap was on the decline... This was the start of the late 2020s - The Foldable Phone, Indie-Pop, Throwback Pop, Dark Corona Era. It started in late 2019. Culture is always transitioning. But if I had to pick a starting point for early 2020s culture it would be late 2019.

Pop music isn't the harbinger of cultural change like people on here like to think IMO. The mood didn't change until February/March 2020 and that will always be the start of the early 2020s to me, unless something even crazier happens after this :o

Fair enough. At least we can agree on the general start and that we really are in the early '20s right now even if things may get crazier down the road.

Oh yes another thing I forgot to mention, the Canadian Election in October! Trudeau got re-elected but it got down to minority so it was still something at least for Canada.

For now, 2019 might seem like the start of 2020s culture. But if pop culture goes in a different direction around 2024 (which it most likely will), 2019-2023 will change to being seen as the last breath of the 2010s.

But Trudeau didn't grow his beard until January.  8)

He must have known what was coming for the months ahead?  :)

There is the "Will the 2020s start late culturally" thread in this section, but this question is talking about if 2020s culture started in late 2019.

I would honestly pick the middle of March 2020 as the start of the early 2020s imo. The whole world systematically shut down, most kids and adults stayed at home, and they started to adjust to this new reality of being homeschooled, video chatting, or working from home. Post-Corona life, especially for Americans and British people, is gonna look so much different than before.

I saw things beforehand but I see your point. Even though the impacts started in March the first ever case of Corona was actually reported in November.

Yeah, but I'm really talking more about the societal effects of the crisis, and not its origin.

Let's see how the rest of the early 2020s will go. Things could change significantly by 2021/22.

"Throwback pop" wtf hasn't Bruno Mars already been doing that for almost 10 years, Billie whatever her name is is just derivative of Lorde and she became popular in like 2013!

There is no new trends in music, especially that has been identified in this thread, what are you talking about?

You obviously aren't following the mainstream music to see what's very popular now. I have. And yes the new throwback funk/pop is what's in now. All the artists are doing it. And Billie Eilish is indie-pop and she's very big now and other singers are doing the same. No it is not the same as Lorde, this is what's popular now. Check out my thread in the 2010s forum for the division of eras based on music in terms of what is most popular.

No its not new, retro rehashes and "throwback pop" was a major part of the 2010s musically, there is nothing to distinguish 2020 from a lot of the 2010s

This is just looking at differences without any really significant distinctions, the only big difference I notice in music is that dance music is not very popular like it was 10 years ago. There nothing new, no new genre or even a revival of an old style that was not popular in the 2010s, it's just an endless rehash of the same old stuff over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again ;D.

I'm not sure if I'd call late 2019 early 2020's, but it definitely felt different from late 2017. The 2017-2018 school year felt like the last 100% 2010's school year. The 2018-2019 school year is when artists like Billie Eilish got popular, and Airpods and TikTok basically took off.

Not any point in 2019 was a Chernobyl-level atomic disaster like it is right now so this thread is a lie

Agreed. I was in my senior year at the time, and it definitely felt like the start of Gen Z becoming more prominent in the world.

Maybe only because the virus was first discovered in 2019, hence the "19" in COVID-19. But unless you were living in or visiting Wuhan, China it didn't really effect you until 2020. It's kind of like an artist that released an album late in the year but the songs didn't become hits until the following year, so the following year is culturally associated with that artist.

The global quarantine is one of the biggest culture shocks of the past several decades, so March 2020 is absolutely the cultural start of the 2020s in my opinion, even if 2019 was the first year in music that unambiguously belonged to Generation Z.

I do agree that we still have a lot of late 2010s leftovers around. This is proven by the fact that there are still some EDM hits coming out this year for example this one:

Ehh... it had the seeds planted in late 2019. But the cultural isn’t truly here yet. Probably not until next year around this time! Or heck even the 2021-22 season! Like I’ve said numerous times the culture has been put at a halt. We’re in this weird transition time still. :-\\ ;D

I should change this to the transition started in late 2019, or at least part of the transition in a way. But we're not totally out of 2010s culture just yet,

I agree. "Transition" sounds more accurate with the cultural state we're in now.

Agreed. That was also after various 2010s shows, movies and such ended like Game of Thrones, Avengers and TikTok was starting to overtake Instagram.
