Subject: It’s 2020, Does Anyone Miss the Early to Mid 2010s Intensely?

Written By: oldmusicfan on 03/04/20 at 8:26 pm

I was watching this commercial for Colgate Optic White Renewal and there were mentions of The Dougie and YOLO:

N1KvosYlYpo

The year on the glasses is incorrect. It should be 2012 or 2013.

It got me wondering whether we’re at that point in history when the early to mid 2010s seem slightly dated. Are you looking back to them already or stuck in the 2000s?

I miss 2009-2014 deeply. I wish we could go back in time, and stop 2015 from happening ;D

I like 2015 but it was definitely the year where it all went awry.

A lot of people on this forum say the 2010s were boring/depressing and no one will be nostalgic for them, yet we're not even 3 months done with them and there are already 2010s nostalgia pieces and we have early 2010s nostalgia in full force online ;D

I’m a little nostalgic for 2011 to 2015 at the moment. The 2020s seem a little blander than the 2010s were, but we’ll see. All we can do is be patient.

I Miss 2008-2013, but it still seems to recent for me to miss entirely. In another 5-10 years I will probably more nostalgic for that time frame.

I have nice memories of 2010-2012, but I wouldn't mind if late 2013/early 2014 year period was erased from my memory.

I miss the early 10s (2010-14 my hs years) for all the new cutting edge technology, Attack On Titan, waiting on the arrival of the 8th generation of gaming, playing the Wii u, playing Pokemon black and white. I don't really miss the music of the era but I do miss when the only people who knew Dj Khalid were hardcore rap listeners

I saw that commercial several times, and while it did make me feel a bit nostalgic, it was cringy as hell.  ;D

The late 2000s and early 2010s period was the core of my childhood, so I definitely miss it a lot. The TV shows, the game consoles, the viral videos and Internet trends, everything.  :\'(

Maybe it's the nostalgia talking, but I feel like there was more activity in pop culture back then than now.

I personally don't wanna downplay the culture of kids who are living today, because there are a lot of positives to come from the late 2010s (2017-2019) like more convenience of smartphones and Internet of things (watching YT videos, calling Uber trips, virtual assistants, etc.), music and video streaming services, Instagram, Snapchayt, TikTok internet memes being dominant on pop culture, and digital video game downloads.

Politics became more toxic and tragedies like high-profile mass shootings increased, sure, but I think kids will remember more on the things they've enjoyed this period. I'm sure of it.

2010 was the year closest to the early 2010s and it sets the stage for the 2010s, but it wasn’t the 2010s yet. Take for example the popularity of Instagram. In 2010, Instagram was launched. 2011 to 2019 was when Instagram had the most followers (no pun intended). I know you can use pop culture to justify making a statement like the one I made earlier, but 2010 seems to side more with the 2000s than the 2010s to me.

Nope I don't miss any part of the 2010s good riddance.

And the reason why 2020/start of the 20s seem bland right now is because we are basically still in the 2010s (culturally) which were also bland.

What is your view on Sonic the Hedgehog and Bad Boys For Life (mainstream 90s nostalgia)? How about Covid-19? Have you listened to Roddy Ricch’s “The Box” (a 2010s rapper that went to number one in this year) yet?

Sonic was better than I expected not a cinematic masterpiece but i'm sure it wasn't intended to be. Bad Boys was okay not as good as the previous 2. I feel like overall mainstream 80s nostalgia is still stronger though I believe 90s nostalgia should get bigger this decade. Nothing really unique about Roddy's song, it could have come out in like 2017/18/19. Nothing about these things really scream different like we're not in the 10s zeitgeist anymore, other than maybe the virus... As bad and apocalyptic as it sounds. In March of 2010 you could tell we weren't in the stereotypical 2000s zeitgeist anymore. Not the case right now.

The 80s really were the new 50s. Stranger Things 4and Wonder Woman 1984 are due to come out soon. Still, you have to agree that mainstream 90s nostalgia is in existence with Sonic the Hedgehog, Dunkaroos returning, NERF Super Soakers looking more like the 1991 models, and 90s Mad Libs around.

Yeah the stereotypical 2000s zeitgeist happened in the years 1999 and 2000 when the 2000s were brand new. In 2010, we were just about living in the 2010s.

1980 does scream early 80s. The Empire Strikes Back, Who Shot JR, and Ronald Reagan beating Jimmy Carter our for Presidential bid.

2020, so far, screams early 2020s, but we haven’t lived in the rest of the 2020s to appreciate the year 2020.

I think from your angle, it feels as if literally nothing is happening right now. People look at the start of every time period like that. You’re waiting for the newer culture to come along and blow the old stuff away. The old stuff makes up the atmosphere of this age. When the old stuff disappears completely, we will be in the 2030s.

1980 didn't have MTV though and it was still mostly a Carter presidency. It was the same year where songs like Funkytown and Upside Down both were huge hits.

You’re stereotyping the 80s.

1980 was the Atari, Star Wars, disco, and Carter days of the very early 80s. You like the 90s part to the 80s when MTV and Nintendo were favorites amongst children and teens. The 80s were not all like 1986 to 1989. I wish 1980 were more like 1989 too, but we just weren’t there yet.

Ehh personally I feel like the things associated with the 2010s are still prevalent:

Instagram, Snapchat, Social Media in general, Over the top blockbuster movies, Trump is still president (Both him & Obama are associated with the 10s to me), Trap music, Skinny/tight fashion, celebrities associated with the 10s are still popular, etc...

Social media started in this century, so it has a ways to go. Obama was more of a 2010s President than Trump. Trump just got in in 2017. The skinny and tight fashion is nowhere near as bad as it was from 2009 into the 2010s when hipsters and rap fans wore the jeans. Celebrities of the 2010s will continue to be popular in the 2020s until we get tired of hearing from some of them.

A lot of prominent 2010s celebrities have already run out of steam/past their peak like Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Adele, Bruno Mars, Kesha (I heard her Rainbow album's good), and Lady Gaga (not as popular as she used to be).

2020 still has late 2010s carryovers, but it doesn't really feel core 2010s or a new era to me yet.

Bruce Springsteen, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, and Genesis were past their peaks when they released their 90s albums. Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Adele, Ke$ha, Bruno Mars, and Lady Gaga are no different from the aforementioned artists. Trying to strike the match while it’s still somewhat good.

The late 2010s are recent still. Give it awhile. By 2025, both the late 2010s and very early 2020s (period we're in now) will be slightly dated.

I wouldn't say I miss it immensely but I do miss it...but only the early 2010s.

Now I won't sit up here and pretend that the early 2010s didn't have a lot of annoying trends. I hated how much Dubstep EDM and House music was being played and how so many songs sounded juvenile...like they belonged on Disney Radio. Also R&B had lost its grip on the mainstream popularity.

However, there things about the early 2010s that I greatly prefer to today. Like YouTube & social media of 2010-2012. Other than jerk boy attire, I miss the clothing we used wear. I loved how fashion was inspired by the late 80s & early 90s.

I miss listening to mixtapes on music websites and buying mixed CDs. I miss the blog rap era and rap forums. Rap forums still exist but they aren't popping like they were in the 2000s & early 2010s. I prefer the Swag/Jiggin era to the Soundcloud/Mumble rap era of 2016/2017.

I liked how we had a wider range of phone designs to chose from back then.

Please remember that Coronaviruses are a group of related viruses that cause diseases in mammals and birds, even the Common Cold is a strain of Coronavirus. The current strain infecting worldwide is Covid-19. SARS in 2002 and 2003 was a strain of Coronavirus.

Well, there was swine flu in 2009/2010, although no one took it seriously other than putting up hand sanitizers everywhere.

Those were the 2000s, not the early 2010s.

I personally don't know. It mostly affects children, and the infection is mild and treatable.
