The chorus is so monotonous and just plain stupid. What was Justin thinking with this song? The word "Yummy" is not even sexually pleasing. Sounds like something a 5-year-old kid would say after he/she eats a cookie.

It reminds me of TTC's song "See you again" because in the chorus he kept saying "2020 2020 vision" and that song was out a couple of years ago.

It looks like pop is divorcing itself from trap/edm based production and taking elements from dream pop, bedroom pop and indie à la Jack Antonoff. The pop sound has never been more headphone friendly and bass heavy. More interestingly, after a 30-year long loudness war, dynamics is starting to see a comeback. Even Selena Gomez's new album is mostly devoid of 2010s style EDM pop which is arguably her signature sound. Conan Gray's upcoming album will most likely to go top 10, and it's excepted to have no EDM/trap influences. Even the 80s influence is wearing out.

I don't see that happening. I hope it doesn't happen because that sounds similar to 2010s style music. But we'll see.
There would need to be a lot more pop songs that come out with that style in order for it to be determined that is the new popular genre. We're not there yet though but I know bedroom pop is popular underground still.

Bedroom pop is different enough to sound different from 2010’s music, so hopefully it’ll gain more popularity.

I don't agree. It sounds straight out of the 2010s because it is... Bedroom pop was popular for a while now. And it also sounds similar to trap in many ways. For example that song "Sunflower" sounded like a typical 2010s song. It's not different enough.

That can be said for a lot of decade-defining genres. By the time Nevermind by Nirvana was released, Alternative Rock had been brewing in the underground for at least a decade. Most 90s Alt Rock artists were inspired by the tastes they had as teenagers in the 80s.
Also Sunflower is not a bedroom pop song. The only thing bedroom popish about it is its drums and maybe the guitar near the middle of the song, but other than that it’s very different. This is what bedroom pop is like today:
L9HYJbe9Y18
sLGW7xUQFFk
3pdFB-JhTes
dSIYUz9CGUM
As you can tell all of these songs are very different but they are all considered to be bedroom pop tracks. So maybe bedroom pop isn’t exactly a genre.

Sunflower is Bedroom Pop? If you're talking about the Post Malone song and not the Rex Orange County song, I think you greatly misunderstand.
I personally think the chances of Bedroom Pop becoming mainstream is small although it could have it's day in the sun the way 2000s indie had it's day back with Fun., Goyte, and The Lumineers back in the early 2010s.

Naw. But I can see why you'd wonder. Xenzue made a good point that Bedroom pop spans across multiple genres. Bedroom Pop is more of an aesthetic or feel. The BP genre tends to be a combination of indie rock, r&b, synth pop, indie music in general. The songs generally have a low budget lo-fi feel to them.

I listened to Selena Gomez's album and I can definitely get when xenzue when he says the loudness war might be coming to an end. The album has a lot of good songs on it. But personally, I like fasted paced music. If every song on the radio sounded like that it would get boring fast :P

Her second album is supposed to drop this year. I can see her ranked with those artists if she continues to make music. She definitely defines the late 2010's, along with Cardi B, Post Malone, Billie Elish, etc. I would put Ariana Grande up there as well even though she was around in the mid 2010's, but her Sweetner and Thank U, Next albums really were a breakthrough in her career. She might join the ranks of Beyoncé and Britney Spears.

It's too early to know and who knows if any of those songs will make the charts. Trap music is still way on top in the charts.
But IF it were to go in that direction then my prediction from a couple months ago was right... R&B will be the new primary genre of the early 2020s. Just like how it was in the early 2000s (but with a different sound of course).

That song sounds straight from the 2010s. See that's what I'm saying. I'm noticing changes and a shift happening but obviously we didn't completely leave 2010s culture yet but I am noticing we are slowly leaving and changes are happening a bit. We're in a shift right now. But of course songs like this one will still be released for a while. There will still be 2010s culture stuff that will be around for a while, even during the transition. Change happens gradually.

The current chart has a few new entries that are trap, which shows there are still some remnants from the late 2010's. "The Scotts" by Travis Scott is at #1. Don't care for the sound except for the instrumental solo in the main hook. Almost in the top 10 is "Righteous" by Juice WRLD which has a nice chill vibe. The big gainer is "Savage" by Megan Thee Stallion.

Not according to the Billboard Charts... Circles was only number one in very late 2019 and early 2020 and the cutoff is November. Therefore Circles is a 2020 song, not a 2019 song. It is still continuing to be played now and I didn't check but I'm pretty sure it's still in the top 10. So it really doesn't matter if you think of it as a 2019 song, we're going by the billboard charts. And by the Billboard Charts it is looking like it will be the number one song of 2020. So it is factually a 2020 song, as that's according to the Billboard.
Just like how Thrift Shop was released in August of 2012 but was the number one song of 2013. Release date doesn't matter. When and how long it stays on the charts is what matters.
So there is no doubt it will be at least in the top 5 songs of 2020. Most likely number 1. I doubt a summer hit could replace its success as the number one song of 2020.
I hope this makes me sense! For anyone who is wondering how the Billboard Year End Top 100 works.

That's why the Billboard charts are not an indicator of the actual culture of the year. It's just stats for airplay even if it's in the first few months of the year. When I make my nostalgia playlists, I look up the charts for that year and notice a lot of songs I actually remember were from the previous year. For example, the 1988 top 100 chart listed a lot of 1987 songs.

The fact that it will be the number one song on the Billboard Year End chart for 2020 means it's a 2020 song not a 2019 song.... This isn't about feelings. It's about facts. This song will be in the top 10 year end charts of 2020. It did not even make the charts for 2019 (or if it did it was very low on the list). I know but according to the Billboard charts it will be on the 2020 chart not the 2019 chart. That's what matters. The cutoff for Billboard is November. So it is indeed a 2020 song in that case. And makes sense because it is still in the top 10 in May of 2020 and still being played.

Thrift Shop was released in August of 2012 but ended up being the number one song of 2013. Circles was released in September 2019 and will probably end up being the number one song of 2020. That's all I'm saying. It's about the billboard charts taking into the cutoff in November. It's also about air play and how long and high it is in the charts. And it still is fairly high in the charts. So it is a 2020 song in that way. Any song that ends up being the number one song of 2020 in Billboard (which Circles will most likely be) is a 2020 song. That's all that I'm trying to say. Nobody in the future will look at the number one song of the year and say "yup that's a song of the year prior" it just doesn't work that way. Because Circles will be the number one song of 2020, people will always associate it as a 2020 song in the future because it is number one in the charts that year. Do you get what I'm saying?

And again, that doesn't matter. Because Circles will be the number one song of 2020 according to the billboard (or close to it) for that reason alone it is a 2020 song and not a 2019 song. I am basing it off the Billboard Charts not just opinion. Hope that makes sense!
And the fact that it peaked in December of 2019 only further proves my point because that is after the cutoff so it will appear on this year's (2020) year end chat. And it peaked pretty quick too and stayed around number 3 for a while through early 2020 and continues to have a lot of airplay. So it is a 2020 song.

Circles came out in August 2019 and it was already played to death the day it came out so it's not like it's a sleeper hit. It's definitely a 2019 song regardless of the weird Billboard cut-off date lol.

Nobody’s saying that Circles isn’t popular right now. It’s just that its peak was in late 2019. Like I said before, a song like “The Box” would be more like a 2020 song. “Say So” by Doja Cat is the top song right now.

I guess it will be ranked higher on the 2020 year-end chart. I checked on the year-end chart for last year's songs, and "Circles" was at #62, but that was because its sales were cut off by the late November deadline.
I don't think it'll be the number-one year-end song, though, especially if there are more number-one or new top 10 hits this year (which there are).

I really like it, especially with the bassy chill-R&B vibe that it has. It's probably my favorite song that came out of all of this. :)

I noticed that pop is having presence on the chart again. We'll see how long it lasts though, a rap song is gonna dethrone the pop song next week.

Then why post a flop single that's not EDM in the least?
The only current EDM song with consistent success I can think off is the Imanbek remix of "Roses".

I've got to say this year music is extremely retro oriented, it's like I've already heard these sounds before(and done better). Why are newer singers/musicians so afraid to take artistic risks?
The disco and electropop sounds have been beaten to death over the past 10-15 years, I am yearning for something sonically radical to break through, more and more I'm losing any interest in mainstream music, not because it is unfamiliar but so damn redundant at this point.

Music is having actual rhythm again and becoming more pop. For example, these guys in this song, if they did a song together in 2018 instead it would have sounded like pure mumble trap noise. But now the sound actually has some rhythm to it. Even in 2017 I said I don't mind bubblegum trap like the stuff from Kyle and Lil Yachty because it had actual rhythem and melody. This song is more pop and has rhythem/melody rather than just sounding like noise which is what mainstream music should be like. Trap just sounded like noise to me, nothing enjoyable about it. I'm glad it's dying out now though.

Another example of a popular song today that is upbeat and is catchy is Savage Love by Jason Derulo.

We're only 7 months into 2020 and I can already confidently say this was the best year for music since 2013. At least going by the mainstream charts and what is popular on the radio. Once we reach the end of the year, we'll see if it beats 2013 for popular music.

I normally don't listen to country but I like that one. Now if only we can put the final nail in the coffin for Cardi B's music, like the one that's #1 right now and has a lot of hype on social media.

Been enjoying this one lately. I hear shades of Love Plus One by Haircut 100.
While there are a lot of 80s splashes in today’s music, it’s not a total 80s remake. I think it’s a good sounding mix. Some stuff like this or Doja Cat reminds me of the music I would hear on Taiwanese dramas such as “It started with a kiss”. And a little disco, a little Eurodance.
