Subject: 2017 Was An Innocent Year

Written By: Slim95 on 05/18/22 at 12:27 am

Think about it. It was the year of fidget spinners, fidget cubes, Nintendo Switch, Pokemon Go, The Solar Eclipse, The Chainsmokers, latin pop, etc. I predict in the future (distant future) people will look back at 2017 as the last "old school" year with an innocent vibe to it. Kinda how people look back on 2005 or 1997 nowadays.

I thought 2018 and 2019 had a more innocent vibe than 2017, imo. 2017 was calmer than 2016 overall, but still had some of fallout from the election drama and incidents like Charlottesville, VA or the mass shooting in Vegas. 2019 felt more like the last year of innocence.

I don't understand the logic of this. People in the future will look back back at 2017 as the last innocent year, although people NOW (supposedly) look at 2005 OR 1997 that way? So, in other words, people of the future will IGNORE the fact that 2005 or 1997 were once (as in NOW) considered "innocent years" and will start all over with 2017? Why will they suddenly ignore those other innocent years? What formula is this?

And a solar eclipse in an indication of an innocent year?

And, come to think of it, why are " fidget spinners, fidget cubes, Pokemon Go, The Solar Eclipse, The Chainsmokers, latin pop, etc." indicators of innocence anyway?  Perhaps because one was younger, a child maybe, and children and things of childhood are more innocent? That would make this a highly subjective list. Random, even. Because OTHER things were going on in 2017 too.

Such as:

The inauguration of Donald Trump

The Harvey Weinstein scandal

At least three monster hurricanes (Harvey, Maria, Irma) that ravaged Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico and other Caribbean islands within a four-week span

North Korea conducted over a dozen ballistic missile tests

And last, but most certainly not least:

A mad gunman opened fire on an outdoor music festival crowd along the Las Vegas Strip from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino on Oct. 1, 2017 killing fifty-eight people and wounding hundreds more, making it the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

I never said 2005 and 1997 would stop being innocent.  ::)

I was working backwards from the future to 2017. You said "people will look back at 2017 as the last 'old school' year with an innocent vibe to it. Kinda how people look back on 2005 or 1997 nowadays." I thought you meant they stopped there. Truth be told, this theory of yours is just too subjective. You still haven't explained how "fidget spinners, fidget cubes, Pokemon Go, , The Chainsmokers, latin pop, etc." are indicators of "innocence ". All years have items like this that come and go. And most of all you haven't explained how a solar eclipse is an indicator of innocence.

Are you possibly opining that these are symbols of innocence for a very, very specific demographic? While some people, like in puerto Rico, were devastated by hurricanes in 2017, some people were happily playing with fidgets and listening to the Chainsmokers and experiencing innocence? The theory doesn't hold water as applying to society as a whole.

I don't get it.  What changed in 2006 and 1998?

Also, if you asked people in 2006 what the last "innocent" year was, I guarantee you 100% of the replies would be 2000.

Yes 9/11, you are correct. But this whole "innocent year" concept is is a faulty premise from the beginning. I can only assume the original poster meant the last "innocent year" for a certain generation or a certain age group. In other words, when did they, and the culture surrounding them, sort of "age out" of "innocence", if indeed there ever was an "innocence", which, in fact, there was not.  Because if 9/11 was "the end of innocence" so was the assassination of JFK ("America lost it's innocence" was a constant refrain after that), the murders of RFK and MLK, the Vietnam War, the Kent State massacre (America killing it's own children), Watergate, the murder of John Lennon (oh, how I kept hearing  "the 60s generation has lost it's innocence' after Lennon was killed in 1980) and on and on and on. With ALL of those events I hard the the endless cliche that "we have lost our innocence". What is this innocence and why does it keep coming back so we can keep losing it?  See what I mean? A faulty premise.

My SIL was living in Puerto Rico at the time and yes, she was there during Maria. (She just got back from a trip to California which was delayed because of Irma.) Many in Carlos' extended family were also on the island at the time. I can't recall how many days after before we heard from her. Yeah, we were VERY worried. As soon as she could (about 2 weeks later), SIL hopped another flight to come here. She said that many people on that flight were crying because they didn't when or even IF they would return.

100%, I look back on 2017 in such a positive light. After that crazy election came & went everything settled down very nicely. However, not the ENTIRE year had that nice vibe to it. I think it starting dying off early in the 2017-2018 school year, giving way to the darker vibe of the late 2010's.

I 100% agree with this. Though I don't think 2017 was in any way shape of form mid 2010s, and neither was 2016, mid 2010s ended in 2015 (maybe you can say early 2026).

BUT you are 100% correct that the dark and cold vibe started in late 2017. I definitely noticed that too. Music really went downhill during that time too.

I still think most of 2016 had more in common in 2015, just not the later part (last quarter) of 2016. 2015 was when Donald Trump first started his campaign for presidency and a lot of incidents happened as well such as the Charleston church shooting and the Paris attacks. It was started the rise of the SJW vs. alt-right culture, which could date back further to 2014 and even 2013, but 2015 was when the tension and division really started to grow.

2019 felt a lot more innocent. It was the year of Baby Yoda and Tom Hanks playing Mr. Rogers. The saddest thing that happened (spoiler alert) was Iron Man's death.

NINTENDO SWITCH! How did I forget about that??? I added that to the list in my first post on this thread. Man this year was a lot better than even I remembered.

Honestly it may have been one of the top 10 days of my life so far as well.. I felt like a kid again when it happened. I remember that day clearly and it felt very exciting and nostalgic looking back at it now. I remember my brother made a joke that the sky looked like the Night Walkers were coming to attack (Game of Thrones reference). I also remember my mother calling in from work saying that it looked like it was 9:00pm (it was around 11:00am when it happened). That day of the solar eclipse felt so exciting and I'm so nostalgic for it now.
