Subject: is the smartphone the definitive symbol of the 2010s?

Written By: pucketbenson on 03/24/22 at 6:49 pm

where I live it was literally in the spring of 2010 when smartphones exploded and become suer mainstream. they were established extremally early in the decade and for all intensive purposes were more or less the same throughout the entire decade. the 2010s is like the 1930s in that the technology from beginning to end looks virtually identical with only small changes that are hard to notice when looking from an outside perspective.

Yes which is why I find it weird when people say the 00s culturally started in 2008 or 2009. Smartphones weren't even at 50% market share back then.

People nowadays are using them more often so I would say so.

Well they did get popular during that time, so perhaps it could be. (I didn't get mine til the 2020s, but in retrospect I could've used one before then.)

Yeah maybe that's why the 2010s sucked so bad because everyone was glued to their phones.

And they still are.

And they still are.

Many people seem to be that way. Although not all the time.

And it continued to be a thing going into the late 10's.

Yes, it started to become a fad in the 2010s, and still is prevalent in the 2020s. Will likely continue to be that way.

Not to nitpick, but I wouldn't use the word "fad", which, by definition, means something that is popular for a relatively short time and then goes away. A better way to state it might be "they started to become popular in the 2010s, are still prevalent in the 2020s and will likely continue that way". Definitely not a "fad" but rather an everyday part of mainstream culture. For better or worse.

A part of a smartphone still uses incredibly old technology, the telephone. So even though smartphones are new it's just a re-invention / update of the original telephone. I wish something would come to completely replace phones. Only thing I can imagine is AI goggles, but it probably won't happen for a long time since everyone is so glued to their phones.

Maybe we can make an prediction based on the past. The first smartphone was made in 1992. The first smart glasses was made in 2011. It took 15 years after the smartphone was first invented to be popular and accessible to the mainstream. So if smart glasses follow the same course, it would take 15 years after 2011 for smart glasses to be popular and mainsteam. 2011 + 15 = 2026.

So we may have smart glasses be popular in 2026 given this estimation /calculation! That's only 4 years away! So smartphones may indeed die and get replaced by smarglasses this decade!

Or smart glasses may be like the internet which was invented in the 1960s but didn't get popular until 3 decades later... I hope not!

Smartphones are an entirely different beast than old phones. You can't compare them. A smartphones call/text sending/receving function isn't even centerstage, now it's primarily used to browse the internet. Even gaming apps are probably more commonly used than texting and calling nowadays.

So what does one do with the smartphone when smart glasses become the new thing?

I know one thing to do when smartglasses become a rage, avoiding those wearing them when walking on pavements in case there bang into me, like their do now when walking along staring at their phones and not paying attention to their surrounding or what is in front of them.

Um no you can still make calls on smartphones.. It also literally has the word "phone" in it. So you are saying it is not a phone then? Why does everyone call it a phone if it isn't then?

When did I say they can't make calls... I never said they took the functionality out, I said it just isn't centerstage. But although it can make calls it isn't primarily used for that anymore. It's mainly used to browse the internet.

I think there's a place where you can donate your old cell phones to.

Local supermarkets may help on that.

What's your point? My point was it was still a phone, and it can make calls... And I am waiting until we move past phones in general to something completely different.

Maybe there's a phone donation center somewhere? ???
