Subject: How would you define hipster culture?

I know when I see it but it's hard to put into words what exactly makes "hipster" what it is. So how would you define it?

Definition of 'hipster': noun a person who follows the latest trends and fashions, especially those regarded as being outside the cultural mainstream.

That seems like an oxymoron. One can't follow the latest trends but at the same time not follow mainstream culture.

I'd define it as "people who want to appear intellectual and sophisticated"

Someone who thinks they are nostalgic for something they never experienced in the first place, yet feels they are better or "cooler" than it, so they adopt it (ironic eyeglasses, ironic moustaches, vinyl albums) while at the same time viewing it through a scrim of irony. A sad, sad way to live. Pathetic. Nothing is truly their own.

Hmm.
