Subject: 2010: Cultrally more like 2005 or 2015?

Which year is 2010 closer to?

A slight lean towards 2015.

I'd say the only thing that makes 2010 closer to 2005 is the fashion. Other than that, it's definitely closer to 2015.

Probably 2015.

Actually now that I think about it, I do think 2010 has a decent amount in common with 2005.

Yes, Facebook was popular in 2010 and 2015, but 2005 and 2010 were still pre-Instagram and pre-Snapchat.

Even though Obama was president for both 2010 and 2015, the politics of 2015 was a lot more divisive than it was in 2005 and 2010. There was no such thing as the Black Lives Mather movement in 2005 and 2010, which really took off in 2014/2015. In 2015, gay marriage became legalized across the entire United States. In both 2005 and 2010, however, gay marriage was still a controversial issue and a lot more people were against it.  I think political wise, 2010 has slightly more in common with 2005. The general political atmosphere was a lot more moderate pre-2014.

Technology wise, it’s definitely closer to 2015. 2010 was the release of the iPad, which instantly took off. And Twitter was already pretty popular in both 2010 and 2015, which didn’t exist in 2005. Facebook peaked in 2010 and was still popular in 2015. In 2005, Facebook was really only used for college students.

Fashion-wise, it’s closer to 2005 IMO (and this is probably a very unpopular opinion) but longer hair on guys was still common in 2005 and 2010. The fashion in 2015 was a lot more hipstery and more conservative, especially with men’s fashion.

Music-wise, it’s closer to 2015. Artists like Jason Derulo and Bruno Mars were very popular in 2010 and 2015. In 2005, artists like 50 Cent and Gorillaz were more popular.

That's an interesting look on things. IMO, 2005 was much more politically and socially conservative compared to 2010. The #BlackLivesMatter and #MeToo movements could have existed back in 2010 had smartphone and social media culture been the same as it would be later on in the decade, it was a progressive year.

Things changed so much after Obama was elected and Lady Gaga made her breakthrough. I personally wouldn't say any pre-2009 year was similar to the 2010s in terms of politics and social atmosphere. I mean, I can even remember looking through a catalogue in the car when I was 9 and my Mum suggesting to me not to get a white Nintendo DS Lite because white was "girly", now something like that wouldn't even raise an eyebrow. Millions of people own white-coloured iPhones.

Yeah, things did get more liberal as time went on. Though at least where I live, 2010 was kinda the last year “that’s so gay” statements were really common. A lot of the irl bullying that you’d see in 2005 turned into cyber bullying in 2010. From my memory, it wasn’t until 2012 when the vast majority of people started supporting gay marriage like they do now, though you could definitely see the trend even before then.

Really ? I heard statements like that all way from high school throughout the early 2010s.

There are some aspects of fashion in 2010 that are closer to 2015 such as flannels, skinny jeans and boots on women, and snapbacks. I do agree that a decent amount of boys were still sporting the shag.

Overall, 2015. Technology hasn't changed too much during that time as smartphones were already around, and Facebook and Twitter. Only the social media platforms changed in popularity.

2015, but not by a whole lot. Despite social media being popular, 2010 was still largely a desktop computer world and not everybody relied on their iPhones 24/7. Still, 2005 barely having social media at all besides MySpace, plus YouTube only just starting and HDTV not catching on yet, makes it considerably more primitive than 2010.

Well, in terms of politics, 2010 pretty much set the tone for the decade as the Tea Party movement became popular that year due to their repudiation of Obama's policies to combat the Great Recession and the passage of Obamacare, so honestly, the year does lean more towards 2015 because of those reasons (and Trump's candidacy address was also a major legacy result of the Tea Party).

For music, 2010 doesn't sound like either 2005 or 2015, so I'm honestly conflicted on that aspect.

2010's technology is a bit closer to 2015, mostly due to smartphones and social media (but it wasn't as dominant as it was back in 2015).

Definitely 2015. 2010 and 2015 (at least pre August) had similar vibes to me. Nothing much in politics changed it was a peaceful time for the most part, there were of course tragedies but no decade is perfect. Technologically speaking it’s  definitely closer to 2015.
