Subject: Songs on the 'Cusp' of the Early 2010s and Mid 2010s
Written By: Early2010sGuy on 06/13/20 at 1:35 am
As a follow up to my last related thread, I decided to do one for my personal favourite eras, the Early 2010s and Mid 2010s
Zara Larsson - Lush Life (2015). Sounds like a dancehall/DJ Snake song because of the beat and flow, with electropop elements because of the aggressive synths. It sounds like its in between Ariana Grande's Break Free and DJ Snake's Lean On
tD4HCZe-tew
OneRepublic - Counting Stars (2013). Has an Inspirational rock vibe with some Disney channel elements here (Correct me if I'm wrong)

Even though it's a slower pace than a lot of songs from the early 2010s, the synths in the chorus won't sound out of place in the early 2010s besides Miley's changing image.

This song has a lot of reverb but the chorus has the aggressive synths of early 2010s electropop.

Two that still kept the early 10's style in the mid 10's

This is what makes 2013 a unique year of the 2010s, a mixture of both eras

Yeah, although clarity also has Mid 2010s elements because of the tone and variety

I would personally put "Hey Mama" by David Guetta, Nicki Minaj, and Bebe Rexha as a cusp song. It has the blaring and explosive horns that can be identifiable with the early 2010s pop anthems and the trap bass that's in line with the mid-2010s sound.

I'd say it's 80% Mid 2010s and 20% Early 2010s...

Clarity sounds almost like Titanium so I put it closer with the early 2010s.
Here is some more.
IcrbM1l_BoI
This song has themes of pessimism and dissatisfaction of the world but it has the abrasive synths in the drop.
hHUbLv4ThOo
Even though it doesn't have the stabbing synths, it is structured like an early 2010s song.

Yeah, also good assertions! They sound more watered down compared to the Early 2010s aggressive synths

What does this even mean?
Also "Hey Mama" is like the most mid-2010s song ever.

It's your opinion, but I don't think it'll be out of place in a year like 2012.
It would have been very out of place in 2012 with its rattling trap beats and sparse production but alright then.
Anyway to answer this thread here's a song that immediately jumps to my mind:
7RMQksXpQSk
It's a straighup mix of early 2010s 8-bit production and synth distortion, but also those boom clap beats and the mid-tempo characteristic of mid-2010s pop.

I would like to apologize for ever putting "Hey Mama" on this thread. It was inaccurate for me to put it on here and I'm really sorry about that.

Hey it's not that serious ok ;) I guess I kind of see why someone would assume it have could be a cusp song but it sounds so radically different than anything from that era, even David Guetta was in full dubstep mode back in 2012.
Btw I didn't even noticed that Bebe Rexha was featured on the song. I really thought she started getting a pop presence in the late 2010s.

After hearing the song more, it definitely sounds like a mid-2010s song.
I'll see if I can find a song that has both of the sounds of the early 2010s and mid 2010s. Probably songs from 2013 or 2014.

Baauer's "Harlem Shake". Easy pick, I know. It has trap-influenced bass/hi-hats, and a rapid tempo and synths that are in line with the early 2010s.
It definitely sounds a lot more upbeat than the more down-tempo trap songs in 2016.

I was gonna add that one too! Its like a Trap song with Early EDM/Electropop synths

These two Imagine Dragon songs from 2013 come to mind.

While both have booming drums, the former has obvious dubstep influences and the latter has the Alex Da Kid production that would sound like it would be from 2010 such as Airplanes, Love The Way You Lie, and Coming Home.

Yeah, Fancy sounds very mid-2010s with that DJ Mustard beat even though its not made by him.
This song right here has this mid-2010s style trap beat but also has those electropop synths all over the song.

The Way by Ariana Grande sounds early 10’s to me. It sounds like it could have been made in 2010. Iggy’s song sounds Mid 10’s tho. Although it has a mix of early 10’s sounds.

"Fancy" sounds nothing like the early 2010's sound IMO. That's mid-2010's through and through.
I agree with the second song.

Dj Mustard produced 2 chains “I’m different” in 2012 and it sounds literally adjacent to Fancy (of course some differences).

This song doesn't sound that different from the anthemic rap songs of the early 2010s.

Yeah, I'd even argue that doesn't sound too different from the late 2000s.
What about these?

Selena's sounds right in the middle to me. Not positive about Taylor's but I think it sounds on the cusp.

M83 - Midnight City (2011), while it has those aggressive synths like in typical electropop songs and Fireflies, this one has a more subdued motivational pop vibe that lots of songs from 2013 have taken cues from like Best Day Of My Life and Royals
