Subject: Were the mid-2010s split?

Written By: mc98 on 04/21/20 at 5:25 pm

I'm making a thread that is similar to the early 2010s one. Do you see the mid 2010s as a split or a consistent era?

I see late 2013/early 2014 and late 2015/early 2016 kinda different from each other despite being both culturally mid 2010s. The obvious thing that makes the mid 2010s consistent was the Vine app, it was popular throughout the entire mid 2010s but Musical.ly became popular in mid 2015. Tropical House was also becoming popular in mid 2015. Trump ran for president in mid-2015. The mid 2010s ended when Trump took office and Vine shut down in January 2017.

Here's how I view the mid 2010s:

Mid 2010s part 1: Fall 2013 - Summer 2015
Mid 2010s part 2: Summer 2015 - Fall 2016

That looks about right, except I would say Summer 2013 was the beginning of part 1. Don't know about Vine and Musical.ly as I never had those. I remember Snapchat being popular and that eventually got replaced by TikTok.

I would extend those eras by 1 year in both directions but overall I agree because I found 2013/2014 to have noticeable differences with 2016/2017. When the oil price crashed, the Charlie Hebdo attacks happened, the Syrian refugee crisis started all in late 2014/early 2015 it really felt like the world had changed. At the time I was hoping they would be temporary shocks and things would go back to normal but they pretty much ended up defining the whole second half of the decade. So yeah, while those events happened in 2015, it didn't feel like until 2016/2017+ that we had to deal with the ramifications of them.

Nah, Snapchat is still popular, it just isn't at its peak anymore like it was in 2015-2017/2018.

Summer 2013 feels kinda "under cooked" to me, not a dominate mid 2010s world yet. The second half of the early 2010s was the David Guetta era like you said, this song was popular in the summer of 2013:

Actually, yeah. I think the Mid 2010s were split although the themes are mostly the same with some small differences here and there

I would say so. I would define the start of the first wave of mid-2010s culture from fall 2013 with trends like EDM and alternative pop, Vine, Netflix, iOS 7, Windows 8, and minimalist design all getting popular around that time.

I think the first wave ended around early 2015. Fetty Wap's song "Trap Queen" became massively popular by January and made trap more noticeable to the rap scene. Surreal, "dank" memes (MLG, Doritos, Sanic, etc.) were big on the Internet and was the catalyst of distorted and deep fried memes in the late 2010s.

Other second-wave cultural trends include Musical.ly getting huge in mid-2015, Instagram and Snapchat becoming commonplace apps by 2016, tropical house getting a huge, yet short-lived boost in popularity thanks to Justin Bieber's "What Do You Mean?" and OMI's "Cheerleader" in 2015, and trap quickly becoming the main subgenre of rap by 2016.

I remember the Syria crisis being huge around summer 2013 with the chemical attacks, and their civil war eventually led to the creation of ISIS.

ISIS was a huge threat to the world in 2015 and 2016, spawning terrorist acts like the Paris attacks and Brussels bombings, and inspiring converts to do the same with the San Bernadino attacks and Orlando nightclub shooting. Islamic terrorism in general had an uptick in the second-wave culture.

The second wave ended in fall 2016 when Trump was elected president, SJW and PC culture was peaking, pop music became more downbeat and droning, and most teens, at this point, mainly used (and still use) Snapchat and Instagram.

No, I don't really see it tbh. Early 2014 and mid 2015 felt basically the same music-wise. The only mid-2010's year that did feel somewhat different was 2016.

Great explanation!

I did put early 2014 and summer 2015 in part 1 together.

Thanks. I was inspired with how you do your cultural analysis, and I decided to take my own spin on it.

No problem. I'm glad to hear that I inspired you, which makes my day  :) I can be over repetitive though, so sorry for that  :-\\

One song from summer 2013 that still had the early 2010's sound was "Clarity" by Zedd. I was surprised to find out that David Guetta wasn't affiliated with them at all.

Like the '70s, it's easier to just categorize the 2010s decade into two halves. The first was the era of Obama, strides in gay rights, the commercial peak of Facebook and YouTube, EDM, and a generally more optimistic tone. The second half is the age of Trump, extreme pessimism, trap music, and the war between "SJW" and alt-right.

I agree. The 2010s in general were sort of a 'neo' 1970s, and the way decade progressed is attributed to that.

Yup I consider the early 10s and mid 10s to BOTH be split. The late 2010s oddly was the most consistent period of the 2010s era who woulda thought?!

I'd say more like the 60s. 2010-2013 being more optimistic in some ways mirrored 1960-1963. The social and political tumult of 2014-2018 mirrored 1964-1968. 2019 offering a glimmer of hope mirrored 1969. 2020 going back down to rock-bottom mirrors the 70s.

Ehh I’d say a mix of 60s and 70s honestly....  heck even the 00s felt more like a republican version of the 60s imo.

K. Do my views about the "transgender community" make me Alt-right though?, it seems because I get the feeling Alt-right is being misused to just mean someone who is not some far left deeply progressive, I think the vast majority of Americans 95%+ are not Alt-right, and do not won't white nationalism in the USA
