Subject: Am I the only person who noticed a change in Late 2018/Early 2019?

Written By: Early2010sGuy on 03/22/20 at 7:47 pm

There was a small shift in late 2018 which I was surprised nobody noticed... However, its effects weren't complete Until Mid/Late 2019... Here are the changes:

-Color blocking becomes a trend again
-Champion shirts somehow become very popular among teenagers
-Perm Hair (AKA Noodle hair) comes into play  8-P
-Tik Tok had a breakthrough around October, along with VSCO's solidified popularity and Discord
-Billie Eilish creeps into the mainstream
-Airpods and Juul pods blew up in popularity
-Game of Thrones announced its ending around December
-Big Bang Theory announced its ending in October
-The Show 'You' premiers on Netflix, along with Spider Man Into The Spiderverse
-Initial decline of EDM, slowly being taken over by Alternative Music and Trap
-Ray Tracing, while not as popular among console gamers, was finally implemented in new RTX Graphics Cards for PC Gamers
-The Lofi/Emo mood in music becomes fully prominent

Also, late 2000s-early 2010s nostalgia began on the internet by then. Before mid-2018, it barely existed on the internet, but then it just exploded out of nowhere, lol.

I won't lie, the late 2018 and early 2019 period was when the core 2010s were over.

I've noticed the small cultural shift, but it was still in line with late 2010s culture. Memes, Airpods, Takis, Juuls, trap, e-boys, e-girls, etc.

Zoomer culture became more significant in 2019, and it'll become dominant in the years to come.

Oh, right. But 2019 was still the first year Generation Z became prominent with those cultural artifacts. Even the climate strike that happened later on was started up by a 16-year-old girl.

I mean- 2017 is comparable to 1997, 1997 was the Core 90s with Y2K Era elements, while 2017 was the Core 2010s with Tik Tok Era elements.

1997 was going through an identity crisis, whereas 2017 was when the late 2010s started. 2016 was the final year of the core 2010s because that was the final year when Barack Obama was President of the United States.

It's cool.  ;D. TikTok uses elements of Vine and Musical.ly to create a global phenomenon that'll be talked about for years to come. It's a core part of Zoomer culture.

It got hugely popular in the US in late 2018, thanks to the "hit or miss" meme. But it was already popular overseas in countries like China and Thailand.

There was no change in 2018 or 2019. Maybe you can argue there were small changes in 2019 that paved the way for early 2020s culture (like Billie Eilish coming on the scene) but it was very minimal.

I’m finding it hard to see any pop culture changes outside of politics.

These last two years till now have felt a big chunk of 2010s culture has just toned down and some has gone and nothing new has come to replace this yet.

There could be more but doesn’t feel super apparent.

I also believe that the late 2018/early 2019 shift isn't as seismic as the 2013 cultural shift, but it was pretty noticeable, thanks in major part to the rise of TikTok memes.

I feel like most the changes in the OP happened in 2017, like AirPods, colorblocking, Meet Me At McDonald's/noodle haircut, and we knew Big Bang Theory and Game of Thrones were ending already by 2017. Some things like Juul and Discord are from 2016. But every year has changes so I'm sure if one looked for them in 2018 they will find plenty. Billie Eillish, Fortnite and TikTok are some I can think of.

Not really. The most popular option at that time was just wired earbuds that went where the apple charger is supposed to go. Airpods exploded during the 2018-2019 school year. And keep in mind I’m talking about Airpods, not just any wireless earbuds.

They'll obviously only get more and more popular as time goes on, but they were definitely around (and popular) in 2017. Maybe it's because I work in tech and am surrounded by Apple fanboys, but many were sporting AirPods in late 2016/early 2017. You’re arguing that they were already very popular by 2017, which just isn’t true. Sure, Airpods came out in late 2016, but that doesn’t mean everyone was buying them right away. It was pretty obvious to anyone paying attention that Airpods truly exploded in popularity by the end of 2018. People who were wearing Airpods in 2016-2017 were not very common.

Yeah, when it comes to Airpods, early 2018 and late 2018 are like night and day.

In early 2018, wired earbuds were the norm. You’d see wireless earbuds occasionally, but they were never the Airpods that you see a lot of today. Most people had wired earbuds that plugged where the apple iPhone cord is supposed to go.

Now in late 2018, Airpods are exploding, wired earbuds are still common, but I remember around this time people would joke about wired earbud users calling them “broke” and there was a wired earbud vs. Airpods war going on. ;D

Airpods will only get more popular as the 2020s go on, will you be saying "Airpods were nowhere near as popular in 2019 as they were in 2022" then?  ???

Even Google, Motorola, OnePus and many others removed their headphone jack in 2017 because they saw the bank Apple was making off Airpods. It was already a "thing" by then.

I'm not saying AirPods weren't more popular in 2019 than 2017, they noticeably were, but 2017 is when it started. Going forward they're only going to get more popular and even their 2019 popularity will start to look minuscule (unless something new comes along).

This completely misses the point of my post.

Even Google, Motorola, OnePus and many others removed their headphone jack in 2017 because they saw the bank Apple was making off Airpods. It was already a "thing" by then.

Apple removing their headphone didn't mean that Airpods became popular right after. It took time for it to catch on. That's why you saw these types of wired earbuds that were popular in 2017-2018.
https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/Gg4AAOSwJytdEG64/s-l300.jpg
Notice how the end of those wired earbuds looks like just an iPhone charger. That was what was popular after Apple got rid of their headphone jack, but before Airpods eventually started taking over.

It's not like once the headphone jack was removed, everyone suddenly had Airpods. You seem to have this false interpretation that everyone was suddenly wearing Airpods once Apple removed their headphone jack.

I'm not saying AirPods weren't more popular in 2019 than 2017, they noticeably were, but 2017 is when it started.

Just because it "started" in 2017, does not mean they were already popular then. You mentioned they were already popular by 2017, which is not true. It wasn't until the 2018-2019 school year where you began to see a bunch of people wearing them. They've been popular ever since.

But that's the opposite of what I said. I said they were more popular in 2019 than they were in 2018 than they were in 2017... and will continue to get more popular. I didn't say everyone suddenly had it when Apple removed the headphone jack.  ???

Indeed it's you who's arguing the air smelt kinda funny in September 2018, and everyone crashed the doors to grab a pair of Airpods that started flying off the shelves. That would just be random. Obviously their popularity only built up over time and it took you until late 2018 to notice it.

Those earphones you posted are what come with the iPhone out of the box. If you bought an iPhone even today in 2020 that's what it would come with. AirPods have always been sold separately, and there were tons of people buying it in 2017. They only lasted 6-12 months before you had to replace them or they got lost, and people didn't seem to mind paying twice or three (I have a friend on his 5th pair), that's when everyone realized Apple struck a gold mine. Then in 2017 every other phone manufacturer removed their headphone jack. Not 2019, – it was 2017.

Tbh, I have to agree with Rainbowz on this one. AirPods were mocked in 2016 for being seperate wireless earbuds, and I remember seeing a mixture of both wired Apple EarPods and other earbuds before late 2018 from my freshman to junior high school years and everywhere else I've went. They really did explode in popularity in early 2019.

Yeah. Before, people are like "Enjoy paying another $100 for those crappy airpods after losing them!" And everyone still had cheap earbuds or at most, beats headphones. Nowadays, airpods are the norm, as Rainbowz said. People are more careful with them, but a lot of people in my high school flex with airpods  ;D

The fashion also has changed a bit which I honestly dont know if it's for the better.

In the 2017-2018 school year, everyone wore minimalist clothing, quicksilver hoodies, galaxy hoodies with a white symbol, black and white shirts, and muted colors like dirty green, dark red, or dark blue. Now, it's all color blocking, while the minimalist trend is still alive, color blocking is the norm with richer colors and stripes, with dark green, bright red, navy blue, and mustard yellow. Aside from color blocking, the A-hole popular kids in my school wear pastel sweaters, or thrasher clothes. Also, in 2017-18, people wore a bit more baggy jeans, with folding on the bottom. It's a different story now with tight ends with any color, most notably beige for the popular evil teenagers. With girls, the changes aren't profound. The minimalism trend is still very popular along with leggings, but theres pastel/thrasher sweaters and color blocking shirts. All in all, the minimalist aesthetic is still alive, but you can tell fashion is stuck in a middle of a transition.

Hairstyles have been significantly downgraded though. In the 2017-18 school year, most boys had undercuts, and they still do. However, perm hair is becoming the norm, yuck.  8-P Its like Pancit Canton in your head

I saw white dudes with afros at the mall in January. Things might get worse with the curly hair trend before they get better.

Tbh I've only noticed the curly hair trend with boys. Most girls wear their hair straight. The curly haired ones usually have naturally curly hair (and they're mostly black too)

I'm not sure if people are going to remember notable parts of the pop culture of 2018-2019 in retrospect. The pop culture of 2009-2017 sticks out like sore thumb.

Here's what I think. Imo, 2018, in particular, was mostly a cultural wasteland. The only notable things that I remember were Fortnite, surrealist/deep-fried memes, TikTok, the dominance of Drake, Infinity War, and
mumble rap/trap taking over the charts.

2019 was a bit better with pop culture thanks to unconventional artists like Lil Nas X, Billie Eilish, and Lizzo. TikTok became a global phenomenon at this point, AirPods are now popular,
VSCO girls and e-boys/e-girls became trends, and the Boomer backlash near the end of the year.

While there may be a lot of things to look back on with 2018 and 2019, I think most people would care more about 2009-2017 with their pop culture happenings.

Yeah pop culture got relatively "back to normal" in late 2019. Late 2017 throughout mid 2019 was an absolute pop culture wasteland. All you heard was trap in terms of music. Gaming was so lame, fortnight, enough said.  ::) Sure they announced Samsung's foldable phone but very few people were able to afford it as it was $2500. It was such a dark, wasteful time.

That's true it was a lot more defined and upbeat and people would remember it a lot more. 2018 is one of those years that feel like didn't happen. Pop culture was so stale and boring. All you heard was trap music, and very bad music at that.

The first few months/half felt like an extension of 2017. But most of it and 2019/today just feels like toned down version of everything in the 2010s.

2019 definitely, it was the year of the huge cultural force that was Old Town Road, the biggest movie of all time (Endgame) and basically the peak of TikTok culture. Also a huge year for Generation Z politically as they stirred up widespread protests and speak up for the first time. And last but not least it's the last year pre-COVID19 which makes it immediately unique with a "calm before the storm" vibe to most people.

I think it's more memorable than a year like 2014, which I noticed a lot of people don't seem to remember much of.

It could be likely. E-boys and e-girls are still a thing ffs. Alt-pop with artists like Halsey and Billie Eilish could persist for a few years until someone makes pop upbeat again like Lady Gaga did back in 2008-2009.

I don’t know if anyone mentioned it but trump support seemed to declining, as did the stark left/right divisions and hot topics about SJWs and free speech of the late 2010s, especially by early to mid 2019

Stereotypical mid 2010s hipster culture and style was vastly less

A fashion trends of 2013-2017 aren’t as everywhere or as necessary.

Less beards, manbuns, flashy mid 2010s hair and clothing

Also a bit less 80s and 90s nostalgia in general.

Even though it was still going. Not as huge as earlier.

It may be so but the core and original support and trendiness of MAGA, alt right vs SJWs and typical issues surrounding all that during 2015-2017 was significantly less by late 2018-late 2019. People were starting to move on.

I see what you mean. But while the fervor after the 2016 election has calmed down with more people recognizing that Trump will be in office for 4 years (or 8 years), we're still strongly polarized as a nation. Democrats have moved farther left, while Republicans moved farther right.

Yes but the stereotypical stuff and common topics surrounding it that defined 2016-early 2018 were barely there by late 2018- mid 2019. You just don’t have as many republicans with that original passion for trump nor as many SJWs making headlines and so on. MAGA hats were almost dated by then.

I’m saying imo I felt that zeitgeist was gone by late 18/2019.

Also skepticism around dating apps is another thing kind of popped up here and there in the late 2010s.

Early to mid 2010s is when it was all new and there was more buzz about tinder etc

I don't know about that. If you checked out the protests across many U.S. states, most of them were Trump supporters with some "Trump 2020" flags being flown. Most Republicans are still passionate for Trump. Albeit not as strongly as 2015-2017, he still has ample support.

The 2018-2019 school year kind of reminds me of the 2012-2013 school year. Both were culturally transitional school years. The 2012-2013 school year started off with the release and popularity of Vine, and the 2018-2019 school year started with the popularity of TikTok. If TikTok lasts as long as Vine did or even longer, then it'll probably be looked at as the first school year with any 2020's influence.

Especially with the pandemic. I actually take back what I said earlier about how the pandemic didn't have an impact on pop culture... But pretending I didn't say that, we all know how it changed social life A LOT, which is no surprise. But with the NBA season, wrestlemania, and other major sports associations canceling seasons, as well as Coachella, SXSW 2020, and the Summer Olympics being cancelled or delayed, its like things shifted jarringly, like what DIVOC?  ;D

The 2015-2016 school year wasn't totally optimistic for me. Summer 2016 at least had some good vibes with Pokemon GO. But other than that, with the increasing shootings and terrorist attacks every week, the start of the 2016 election campaigns, inflamed racial tensions, and the alt-right vs SJW conflict rising (mostly online), I was feeling a sense of dread about what was around the corner. The 2016-2017 school year pretty much confirmed my dread.

Funny thing is now I'm seeing teens say "2017 was the last fun year". :o And I'm like "Whaaaaa...?"

The 2016-2017 school year pretty much confirmed my dread.

Funny thing is now I'm seeing teens say "2017 was the last fun year". :o And I'm like "Whaaaaa...?"

It seems like the summer of 2016 is considered the "last of the good times" and that everything went downhill in 2017. A lot of 2000s babies on Popedia are nostalgic for 2016 (and even on Instagram and Twitter). In fact, yesterday I saw a post on Instagram with a lot of likes that said "I want to go back to the days when Fetty Wap dropped Trap Queen" and that was in 2015. It's weird to see people nostalgic for a year I remember like yesterday.

That was the summer of PokemonGo, lol. I remember "Wake Up" by Fetty Wap being popular that summer, but this is one song that comes to mind the most:

He was also trending on Twitter a few days ago and I saw people already being nostalgic over his music already.  ;D

Probably one of the only things I liked from Summer 2016 was Pokémon GO, and that's because it actually enabled me to walk outside to catch Pokémon while also exercising as well. The 2016 Olympics were also great to watch too. But looking back at it now, it was mostly tumultuous from what Zelek3 said. Suicide Squad and Ghostbusters 2016 were critically panned, One Dance was boring imo, we had the shooting deaths of Philando and Alton, the Dallas/Baton Rouge police shootings, the Orlando nightclub massacre, and the Nice, France terrorist attack.

I just didn't like the relatively lifeless beat throughout the song. I feel more bored than energized whenever I hear it.  ;D

One Dance was one of the most lame and boring songs of the decade.

Yay, someone else agrees with me!  :D

But of course, to each his/her own.
