Subject: 2013: Early or Mid 2010's?

Hi, new user here.
Do you think 2013 is early 2010s, mid 2010s, or transitional (mention the transition month in comment)?
Note to mod(s): If you think this is a repost, just merge to the similar thread...

Welcome to inthe00s!
Personally, 2013 (somewhere between January-August 2013, I think???) is a transitional year from the early to mid part of the decade. Vine became popular and set off a wave of social media memes, flat designs were new (iOS 7 and Windows 8 ), electropop was dying off while EDM became more popular, and Netflix started to create original shows.

Neither as it was transitional but if I had to pick which it leaned to on the whole then early 2010s but the transition started in February of 2013.

I would say transitional. I can't precisely place a specific month. But I'd say that the 2012-2013 school year was still primarily Early 2010s and was at the end of the much larger 'Electropop era', while 2013-2014 was primarily Mid 2010s and was at the start of the much larger 'Core 2010s'. So somewhere circa Summer of 2013 was when the transition was complete.

I guess a good cultural marker to use would be when Miley Cyrus infamously 'twerked' on Robin Thicke at the 2013 VMAs
We certainly were NOT in the Early 2010s anymore by that point ;D

2013 was the year that was most transitional out of all of the early 2010s years. Think of 2013 as the fine line between the early 2010s and the mid 2010s. It’s early 2010s, but the end of 2013 leans towards the mid 2010s.

Nah, 2012 was moving on especially in terms of technology. Ultrabooks replaced netbooks, laptops started coming with touchscreens and Windows 8, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean fuses Android tablet and phone OSs, Adobe Flash abandoned support for Android/mobile, iPhone went 4-inches after Steve "3.5-inch is the perfect size!" Jobs passed away, iPhone implemented Facebook and Twitter at the OS level and introduced notifications (which lead to the social media age we're in today). Very transformative year.

This is a dope informative video on the rise & decline of one of the biggest musical genres in the Late 2000s/Early 2010s, Dubstep:

You'll also notice in the video that the 'Dubstep sound' started fade around 2013 or so.

None of this pertains to culture imo, just technological advancements that evolve every year...2012 was definitely an early 10’s year. It didn’t feel different or culturally different from 2009-2010.

Most of the time (Not always ofc) The ‘3’ year in a decade is transitional between the early portion and middle part. It’s not 100% Mid but not exactly early either. 1993 & 2003 are good examples.

2013 is transitional at best.
You would hear songs that are either more early 2010s or mid 2010s, but most of all were on the cusp. Fashion is either neon or hipster.

1993 still had a little bit of that late 80s/early 90s influence but overall yes I agree I lean it towards the mid part of the decade.
2003 however is deffo transitional..... If I had to put in a category I would lean towards the early part but its definitely transitional mid 2000s genres like Crunk was brewing e.g. Lil Jon's 'Get Low'. Things/people popular during the mid 2000s were growing slowly.

There was a lot of intolerance towards emo people in the 2000’s as well. It really sucks but I vividly remember in the late 2000’s people would say “emo is gay” and call them derogatory names.

Late 2012 was when the mall brands (American Eagle, Aeropostale etc.) went out and fast fashion (H&M, Forever 21, Zara etc.) came in in a big way. By 2013 people were writing the obituaries.

I think that started in the late 2000’s tho. Touch screen keyboard phones like Samsung were very popular around 2008-2012. Social media notifications were already being implemented in the mid to late 2000’s with phones like the blackberry and sidekick... 2012 might be the year mainstream smartphones like the iphone began to become more prevalent but for the most part (culturally speaking) 2012 was still very early 10’s. There wasn’t anything technologically changeful about 2012 imo other than the fact that ppl started to adapt more to smartphones which were products of the late 2000’s.

Also that's not how it went for social media notifications. I had a iPod Touch in early 2010 and Samsung Galaxy S in late 2010. Facebook didn't have notifications, you had to open the app to see them. The app was a link to the website, it wasn't a proper app. I signed up to their SMS notifications and was using that up until late 2011 (which came mid-2012 for iPhones) and usually waited to get on my computer to reply to anybody unless it was urgent. Twitter also didn't have push (instant) notifications, instead it refreshed every hour to check for them (you could refresh it more frequently but it would drain battery). Facebook in general didn't focus on mobile in the early 2010s (2009-2011). How Facebook ditched the movile web and went native with its new iOS App (August 2012)
edit: btw I might sound nitpicky about everything, but trust me I don't actually care whether late 2012 gets classified as mid or early 2010s ;D :D

Early 2010s sounding songs in 2013:
Scream and Shout
Play Hard
I Knew You Were Trouble
Feel This Moment
Don't You Worry Child
I Could Be The One
I Love It
The Fox
Clarity
Applause
Troublemaker
The Other Side
Heart Attack
Mid 2010s sounding songs in 2013:
Royals
Get Lucky
Harlem Shake
Blurred Lines
Roar
23 (J's On My Feet)
Wrecking Ball
Drunk In Love
Transitional/cusp sounding songs in 2013:
Thrift Shop
22
Can't Hold Us
We Can't Stop
Safe and Sound
Love Me Again
Mirrors
The Monster
Let Her Go
Stay
Just Give Me a Reason
When I Was Your Man
Pompeii
Say Something
Counting Stars
Demons
Animals
Wake Me Up
Come and Get It
Radioactive
Hold On, We're Going Home
Timber
Burn
Like I said before, 2013 was a transitional year where you hear songs that sound like the early 2010s or mid 2010s but most of all, there were songs that were on the cusp of both eras or songs that are transitioning to the next era while sounding primitive. Let me know if you disagree with some of the placements.

I had a touch screen HP touchsmart desktop in 2010 which also came with a laptop version of it (HP Pavilion). 2010 was also the year that the ipad came out...Ipod touches were already pretty common in 2010-2012 as well. In 2011 the 4th gen ipod touch was released and was the first to have a front facing camera attached to it. Despite all of this, I don’t really see how the designing of ultrabooks significantly changed culture or an era tho. Ipods were released in 2001 however it still doesn’t take away the fact that 2001 is the early 2000’s. I see students still using laptops today rather than ultrabooks. As for social media notifications (push notifications), that was a feature that came out in 2009. I definitely remember facebook having push notifications in 2010 with red numbers on the corner of it. They evolved per update but they were most definitely there. https://www.iphonejd.com/.a/6a010535fde333970c0120a7afbd9c970b-pi This is an example of a 2010 FB push notification.

Late 80s culture died in the early 1990s. The early 90s culture died in the mid 90s. ‘93 was a 100% mid 90s year anyway you look at it because we know it for all of the new things that came out of the year. The new things were an off-shoot from the culture that came out in the early 90s and that makes 1993 a mid 90s year.
