Subject: Why are Europeans so behind in fashion?

Written By: imrane on 01/19/20 at 2:35 pm

What gives? I see more undercuts and manbuns here than back in 2015 when supposedly they peaked in the USA.
This is a recent photo from Warsaw, supposedly the most hip place in Poland:

I think either they prefer more traditional expressions or because modern western fashion is primarily influenced by the US - it would take other countries time to follow suit. Heck, they played music from a couple of years ago on radios when I was in the Philippines back in 2011 and 2012, whereas in the UK, they pretty much always insist on the latest and greatest unless the radio segment or station specified otherwise.
I still hate seeing the haircut. I want it to fade away (no pun intended) as soon as possible. Either grow it all or don't.

I don't think they're behind, just different. Having been to both continents regularly, Europeans dress a lot nicer than North Americans in my experience. It also probably depends on the country.

I live in the UK and undercuts are still incredibly popular here. I don’t think we’re behind on fashion, we’re just not as influenced by American fashion trends as you seem to think we should be. London, Paris and Milan are fashion capitals so we don’t need to rely on New York or Los Angeles for trends.

The undercut was popularised by Bieber (Canadian, but still North American), and probably some obscure British boybands/artists and 1D.

I went to Denmark in the summer and I see a lot of dudes with parted hair and curly tops, specifically guys aged 15-20. Here in America, undercuts and manbuns have already peaked in 2015-2017.

I never knew who popularised it, all I know is it’s been around for nearly a decade now and doesn’t show any signs of going anywhere. I’ve been getting an undercut since I was 17.

I don't know if jerks like this style or if it turns people into jerks but it triggers aggression in me. I get total smug vibes by guys that have this style. And they usually have the i'm-better-than-you behavior. To me it screams of no individuality.

It's funny how a guy I know from work is both gay and anti-Nazi yet wears this Nazi haircut. He literally has the swastika crossed on his profile picture (anti nazis vs neonazis is a thing in Slovakia). Lol the irony.

That's exactly how I feel about skinny jeans. Skinny jeans are such a cop out (as we used to say). They're tight as can be in the leg but loose/baggy in the butt. What kind of thing is that? In the 70s all pants were tight and they were tight EVERYWHERE. Leg, crotch and butt. For men and women. And absolutely everybody wore them. It wasn't so much a fashion as it was just something people wore and didn't think much about. Either wear tight jeans or don't, but don't have them tight and suddenly cop out at the butt. Because of this asymmetrical aspect of super tight in some places and baggy in others, skinny jeans just end up looking ill fitting rather than cool.

Yeah. This annoys me too because of the vibe of the decade, which is more LGBT accepting, yet people don't look very gender non-conforming save for a few cases.

Same here although I think some make me look short. IDK but it could be the mirror I'm using.

Ermm, are you talking about me? I'm gay, have an undercut (well, until recently) and hate Nazis (duh?). I hate this "Nazi haircut" meme. The hairstyle was popular in the 1920s, well before Nazis.

I had one of those skin-tight skinny jeans that showed off... the assets. It wasn't a good look. The point of skinny jeans is to look skinny. When everything's flat except your butt, which sticks out round and proud, it ruins the look. When it's baggier around that area it looks a lot more symmetrical.

I think it's because guys probably wanted more room in that area and maybe because they don't really like that sexualizing factor of skinny jeans - baggy jeans did simply just happen to be out of fashion. I've seen one woman wear such jeans though.

I’ve never bought a pair of skinny jeans that were baggy on the butt. The main reason I buy skinny jeans at all is because I like how my butt looks in them. What you’re complaining about seems more like a case of people buying jeans that aren’t the correct size.

Anyway, I’m getting a bit bored of all this whinging about fashion being too ‘gender confirming’. So what? If you want to grow out your hair and wear nail polish then go right ahead, most people don’t care how you dress or style yourself.

The jeans are tighter in the UK. You won't find "super skinny" in most North American malls. I remember I made a post about in the Rants 'R' Us thread ;D

Here it is, with the relevant quote http://www.inthe00s.com/index.php?topic=35513.12900

Another way I noticed it is the fashion. People here in Britain dress really nice! There are probably some items that would be considered too nice back home. Things like floral prints, super tight jeans and shirts, or the short shorts. I see a lot of guys here being very experimental. Canada is one of the most progressive countries in the world when it comes to LGBT issues(I bet even more progressive than the UK, even though seeing all the rainbow flags around Edinburgh and Manchester was lovely), but a lot of these clothes would be considered 'too gay' or too daring back home. I regret that we sometimes import those regressive attitudes even though we're more progressive than that.  :-\\

I actually tried on a pair of skinny stretch jeans and a tight sweater because I thought they looked really nice when worn by the locals here. But it looked so out of place on me. I know if I wore that back in Canada it just wouldn't fly. North Americans like it baggy and formless, "sac à patates", instead of the fitted clothes here which come across as 'gay'. It's a shame!

I didn’t know that. All my skinny jeans are ‘super skinny’. I guess that’s another example of fashion trends not being universal.

Thanks for that. I have a few floral shirts too. I didn’t know those things would be considered experimental or too out there in Canada. I expected that from the US but not Canada. You learn something new every day.

My brother says he's glad that Hitler forever tarnished the toothbrush mustache, otherwise all the hipsters would have them today.  ;D

LMAO. No Howard, I don't have a Hitler moustache ;D

However, the Hitler 'stache was popular before Hitler's rise to power. He was in on a popular trend at the time that had nothing to do with him, although it would eventually become associated with him.

Over the years it has been said that what happens in the USA, five years later happens in the UK, five years more later in Europe, and twenty years more in Belguim.

No, I have a friend who's gay and he has an undercut. He put a crossed swastika on his profile photo in Fb (in his country taking a stand against neo Nazis is big right now as a Filipino was killed by a neo Nazi thug in Bratislava in 2018 and also many people there are more traditional so gay people are not well-regarded).

I personally don't do the undercut = nazi assotiation, I thought it's funny to share it as to make fun of it as I hate the style.

In my experience two types of people would wear it: 1. Someone who blindly follows trends or/and 2. A gay guy. In real life I usually automatically assume the second, because loads of gay guys love to have it. I generally can't stand it, and I rarely care what others wear.

Personally I've seen this haircut far more on straight guys, although to be fair, I don't know very many gay guys in real life.
And that murder does suck. I speak as someone who was born in the Philippines and moved to the UK at six years old. I live in a tolerant town but such incidents could always happen to me regardless.
