I was on Twitter today and I saw "The last month of the Decade" trending so I went to take a look. I saw a lot of comments that were saying the new decade doesn't start until 2021. I replied to the comments saying the new decade starts in 2020 and not 2021. Everyone jumped on me (not literally) saying I was wrong. So I said what year did the 1980s start and one guy replied "1981 to 1990". I know about the 199th decade starting in 1981 and ending in 1990 but I wasn't talking about that.

There was no year labeled a “year 0” per se, meaning year 1 is the first year of the first decade, the first decade ending at year 10.

There is Year 1 AD. The year before that is Year 1 BC. There is no year zero.

So the folks that say the 20’s do not start until 2021 can make a case.

I've experienced 5 - going on 6 - "turn of the decade" events over my life.  In every case, in the "0" year popular culture and people regard it as part of the new decade, not part of the decade that preceded it.  Although I agree about "no Year 0" etc. in a strictly technical sense, per pop culture the "0" year has always gone with the decade that follows it, not the decade before it.

Obviously I was asking a question about the upcoming decade and I wanted to see what you guys thought. I really don't need the rudeness from others on here which sometimes I get from you guys. I respect other people's opinions but don't need the rude comments.

Well you won't find many people who see the 2020s as the "203rd decade". Time periods are usually named after the starting year. For example the 1800s started in "1800". 2000s started in 2000. The 2020s would start in 2020. When people refer the next decade as the 2020s or '20s then you can assume to them the year 2020 also falls into that time period they're speaking about.


In the end none of this really matters, I guess. Once 2020 hit we'll be seeing a lot of interest from people who would be eager (or cynical) to see the new changes the next decade will offer.

This is overall a simple question that is only confusing in hindsight. We're currently going by Anno Domini (A.D.) date and timing. In this system there is no "year 0" as AD starts at 1. However, the issue is that the Anno Domini system was created back in 525 AD and people who made the dating system didn't take years between 1AD and 10 AD into account and how that would effect all the decades after that.  Not only that, but the AD system only became more widely used until sometime after the year 800 apparently.

So my guess is that when the AD system was created and widely used people were simply going by the 0 - 9 rule for decades, 1 - 100 rule for centuries, and 1 - 1000 rule for millenniums without ever considering the fact that the very first decade starts at 1. They saw 1AD as the start of the new century or millennium and never factored in how it works as a decade (that is unless you count 1BC as a 0AD as it's weird to say a decade ends on year 1). It's all likely just a mistake that won't get fixed and I don't think we'll be making a new time system anytime soon.

My response above probably won't answer your question directly, but hopefully I made it a bit more clear on why or how things are the way they are. To me the people who made the AD time system just didn't take the years 1AD and 9AD into account. Either that or 1BC is actually 0AD since by BC times the decade would start at from say XX29 down to XX20, but in the last decade BC goes from 9BC and ends on 1BC instead.

They are wrong. The next decade starts on January 1, 2020. It does not start in 2021. I don't care about the mathematical mumbo jumbo they try to come up with. The zero of the decade is part of the decade, I don't care what anybody else says.

And nobody calls decades like they do for centuries. Therefore, it begins right at 2020. It doesn't feel that long ago, but there was the same discussion on here about 10 years ago regarding the 2010's.

Way too late if you ask me. The time for a change is right now. I think the new identity will be formed by 2021. I would not want the 2010s to extend past that.

Ehh I mean times and music don’t really sound much different compared to two years ago. I highly doubt sound, fashion and technology is gonna change all that much in the next couple of years. One of the reasons I miss the 2000’s is because from 1998-2003 music, movies, fashion, toys, etc where all shaped by the new millennium. Everything was so futuristic which nearly 20 years from that time we now see a developed identity in that time frame. Many people call it the millennium era, y2k era or early 2000’s. I honestly think the 2000’s started in 1999 and ended in 2008 culturally. As for this decade it will culturally end sometime soon hopefully lol.

I agree. In a way I hope a new genre starts however judging by this decade I’d say genres might be ending within the next 10 years.
