A little late on the news, but one of the most iconic cars of the 20th century has officially ceased production. The Volkswagen Beetle, which premiered back in 1938 during the midst of Nazi era Germany, is officially no more.

Production ended in July of 2019. The car was at its peak in popularity during the 1950s & 1960s (especially in relation to Baby Boomers & the counterculture tied to the latter decade). The car had a bit of a renaissance at the turn of the millennium, with the second generation 1998 re-release of the car, geared towards the children of the revolutionaries of the 1960s & 1970s, their children being mainly Gen Xers and Millennials.

Being dubbed the "People's Car", it had a very wide appeal; from rich to poor, from young to old, etc. etc. I wasn't particularly a big fan of the design of the modern Beetles back in the 2000s (personally, I never really found them that aesthetically pleasing), but I could still appreciate the original design and its place in automobile history. I liked the Beetles made during this decade though, as they tended to evoke more of a nostalgic callback to what the Beetle actually was in the mid 20th century.

It's a darn shame that the 1998/2011 re-releases of this iconic vehicle is now ending production :\'(. The original line of Beetles ended in 2003, but at the very least you still had more modern versions of the Beetle still being sold to new generations of car buyers.

Above is the article on the recent demise of this line of cars. Hopefully they may bring this back, but who really knows anymore.

Thoughts?

Given today’s “cancel  culture” , I am surprised that there have not been mass protests to take all of these vehicles off the road, since the VW was one of Hitler’s initiatives.

I thought the modern beetles we're ok. They weren't the most attractive cars in the world but it definitely had its own unique vibe to it. As a 00s kid, I always associated Volkswagen with Beetle like I often forget their other cars like Jettas. I remember one time when I was 4 I dreamed about being stuck in a beetle.

It will be back.  It's a nice way to drum up sales as people think it's their last chance to get one.

Yep.  Ford did the same thing about 15 years or so ago when they canceled the Taurus and came out with the “Ford 500”. In short order, the Taurus was back.

Is this a case of Herbie does not ride again?

"The Love Bug" was one of the first films I remember seeing in a cinema.
