Subject: Is 2015 culturally closer to 2010 or 2020?

Written By: Philip Eno on 08/21/19 at 4:03 pm

When it comes to technology, politics, music, fashion, TV shows, do you think 2015 had more in common with 2010 or 2020?

When it comes to politics, 2015 is definitely closer to 2020 than 2010. Really no question about that. Music is hard to say. I feel like 2015 is right in the middle when it comes to music. It doesn’t have that electropop sound of 2010 but it doesn’t sound like 2020 music either. Fashion wise, I’d say it’s closer to 2010. No one wore 90s style jeans and baggy clothes were definitely not cool. You wouldn’t be caught dead sporting a fanny pack or chunky sneakers in 2015. Technology wise, 2015 is closer to 2020. In 2010 people still had flip phones and slide phones and social media was new. 2015’s technology is not that different from 2020 maybe with the exception of Alexa. For tv shows, it’s hard to say cause I don’t watch that much tv. But I think it’s closer to 2020. In 2010 reality shows were still big. I feel like 2015 and 2020 had more dramas and better programming.

Politics: Leans toward 2010

Everything else: 2020, no contest.

You think politics leans towards 2010? By 2015 things were already pretty heated and divisive. Trump’s campaign was already in full swing in 2015.

I was thinking mostly the same thing. It didn't seem as divisive to me as even 2016 did.

But maybe that's because I don't pay attention to the news.

Yeah, it’s hard to say when politics really changed. Cause there was a drastic change and it happened pretty much in the middle of the decade.

Definitely closer to 2020. It’s not even close.

In terms of politics, music, social media, and fashion, I would say 2015 leans more towards 2020, with pop becoming more reverberated and downbeat, trap taking over the rap game, politics getting more heated along with ISIS and Islamic terrorism gaining steam, athleisure being trendy, Snapchat and Instagram being the de facto apps for teens, and most people having smartphones for their day-to-day lives.

Late 2015 was when the atmosphere changed politically I think. In fact I’d put it down to a single event which is now often overlooked - the Bataclan attack on Friday 13th November of all dates. Up til then Donald Trump’s campaign hadn’t really made much in the way of international headlines but the Bataclan was what kicked off the ‘Muslim ban’ policy. Until then it had been a pretty easy-going decade politically, although there were stirrings of discontent away from the U.K. and US - the far right did well in the EU elections of 2014 in countries that were hit hard by the financial crisis.

Technologically, it's way closer to 2020, but the quarantine has created such a radical environment in 2020 that '15 is closer to '10 by default.

I would say 2015 is closer to 2010 than it is to 2020. Anything before 2016 really feels distant now. But even things from last year feel kind of like "a long time ago" because the pandemic changed everything.

So I am not separating it in categories because everything has changed and we're not very close to 2015 anymore. In a couple of years this will be even more profound. So in terms of everything, 2020 is closer to 2010 than to 2020 for sure.. In my humble opinion. The early and mid 2010s are feeling really distant now given everything that has happened.

I feel like people exaggerate the cultural impact of the coronavirus. 2015 isn't automatically closer to 2010 just because of a pandemic. Black Lives Matter still existed in 2015 and was arguably already popular. Snapchat and Instagram were popular in 2015 and still are today. There was way more change between 2010-2015 than 2015-2020.

I'd say it's a pretty big deal when literally every single little thing you want to do outside of your house is affected in some way by a sickness that got completely out of control. In 2020, you can't dine out, go to concerts, attend the cinemas, walk in the park, attend social clubs, or do almost any other public activity without either having to take serious precaution or being forbidden altogether. A few rising trends and refinements to social media don't make living in 2015 nearly as different from living in 2010 as living in a year where literally everything has been completely hijacked.

Also late 2014 into 2015 was when I first about safe spaces/trigger warnings on campuses, whereas in 2013 and before I never heard of them. It was also when I noticed the alt-right/alt-lite beginning to gain traction online, bolstered by Trump starting his campaign.

It's funny, people nowadays seem to think stuff like SJWs, the alt-right, etc. only started in 2016, yet I distinctly remember them already gaining traction in 2014-2015 (with 2016-2017 being the peak, but not the start). Maybe I was just ahead of everyone else in terms of paying attention to that stuff.

It could also depend on where you live. If you live in California, trends tend to start earlier there before catching on to the rest of the country.

For me I heard of SJWs as early as 2014 maybe even 2013. But I only heard of the alt-right in 2016. Before that it was just called the Tea Party I believe. But I only heard other buzzwords come into fruition in 2016 such as "cuck". In 2016 is where I noticed the political divide escalate the most really quick around the time of Brexit.
