What song do you guys think sounds dated already?

I would say a lot of songs from 2016 such as Don’t Let Me Down and Starving.

2016 was only 3 years ago... How can songs from 2016 sound dated? The last songs to sound dated were songs from at least 5 years ago. Maybe some songs from 2014 can pass as sounding dated. Songs from the early 2010s you can safely say sound dated at this point.

In order to sound dated, we would have to be immersed in a new stage of pop culture and that is sooooo not the case.

Lol, it sounds nothing like a '60s song. If "Feel It Still" is from the 1960s, then songs such as "California Dreaming", "Eve of Destruction" and "Twist & Shout" may as well be from the 1910s...

Yeah, I agree. Just because "Feel it Still" mentions the year 1966 doesn't mean it sounds like the 60s... It's just a very typical Indie Pop song.

And it doesn't dated in the least. It practically sounds the exact same as "Sucker" by the Jonas Brothers which was a huge hit this year.

And not gonna lie, but mid-2010s music in general has aged remarkably well compared to how I percieved songs from 2010-2012 back in 2015/16.

Okay, maybe songs from 2015/2016 don’t sound that dated although there are differences, but 2014 and below sound like a very different time period.

2016 feels like forever ago, especially the early part. After all it was a completely different era and so much has changed since then.

You can't count songs that were deliberately made to sound like it's from a previous decade as being "dated" lol.

Now 2014, that's another story. Early 2010s? Even more of another story. I know on this forum these kinds of things has always existed. But come on, saying a year that only happened 3 years ago is dated is just plain silly even for this website.

I can't think of any songs as of recent that sound dated but I think the songs from 2009 sound dated. I think they sound dated because the majority of them were made using Autotune. Songs are not being made using Autotune right now. I don't think any songs that came out this year are going to sound dated until 2022.

Too soon. Years get dated at minimum 5 years so more like 2024 or 2025.

In a sense 2016 is dated, because the sound of pop was definitely different. It was a lot more EDM-based and the vocal style of the time was similar to Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez. The form of mumble rap that existed was crude and it hadn’t acquired the iconic melodic element for the most part.

In 2019, pop is approaching a genre-less sound, although there are 3 main styles for new pop: PC Music Electropop, Bedroom Pop, and Pop with Trap drums. There isnt really dominant vocal style within the pop world anymore.

Exactly. 2016 music feels different from 2019 music. I never heard the names of Billie Eilish, Cardi B, and Khalid in that year. The Chainsmokers ruled the EDM scene that year and was replaced by Marshmello in Late 2017. Post Malone was considered a one-hit wonder. Pop music had Dancehall and Tropical vibes. Even mumble rap wasn’t dominated by rappers from SoundCloud. Plus, Justin Timberlake and Flo Rida had top ten hits in 2016, nuff said.

Autotune is still very much in use, especially with some rappers like Post Malone.

The technology also got better so it's not as obvious to hear as it was before.

Feels like pop music is just trap rap today or maybe some EDM. EDM has being dying down lately though.
