It kind of made me the innocence of those times. The song is about being bullied at school and getting your revenge, but had it been released today after the events of Sandy Hook and Parkland, I'm pretty sure they would have been dismissed as psychotic.

Eh. We already had a bunch of school shootings by then.

Stylistically I don't think so. The new wave revival is pretty much dead now while 2011 was in the thick of it.

As far as the subject matter, it would probably be moderately more controversial now, though like Bornin86 said there were already a lot of high profile shootings by 2011.

New Wave Revival or more correctly named the Post-Punk Revival movement was already more than dead by 2011, it's an early 2000s thing.

Like I said on the other thread, there’s no reason why those lyrics would be controversial in countries where school shootings are extremely rare. Such a song might not be a success in the US but then most aren’t anyway.

Not really New Wave, it is part of the indie pop trend of the time.

Honestly, I don’t think people would really care if it were released today.
