Subject: Is 2019 peak late 10s or was it 2018

Written By: 1997days on 06/06/19 at 11:58 am

I was thinking it was 2018 as the peak late 2010s since 2019 seems a little different from 2018 but still fits the late 10s culture.i know for sure that we aren't in the core 10s  anymore.

2018. What a beautiful year! I'll try to expand more on that later.

Kinda was, EDM was still very popular, Shawn Mendes and other artists made good songs, movies like Black Panther, Incredibles 2, Bumblebee and other movies were popular, Fortnite still having no backlash, and smartphones are transitioning to Bezel-less displays.

But the bad things are: Lil Pump, Lil Xan, 6ix9ine, Lil Uzi Vert, mumble rap in general. Infinity war, Justin Trudeau still ruining Canada (still getting worse), Logan Paul, Tide Pods, and lots more.

To me, it's a 50/50, until September 2018 when things really sucked.

Honestly I have a feeling that 2020 will be the peak of the current culture. Even though it won't officially be the late 10's anymore, but all things building up during 2017-2019 will hit a climactic point in 2020. My prediction is that many of the defining artists such as Cardi B, Migos, Post Malone, etc. will release albums in 2020 that will be at the peak of their careers. I base it the fact that it's a Summer Olympics/Presidential Election year and those years always seem to be peak years of their respective eras, such as 2016, 2012, and so on.

I’m not sure about that. The latest single from Cardi B isn’t getting any success. 2020 will probably feel very different from the late 2010s. The year 2010 feels different from 2007-2008 due to the new trends introduced from that year.

it's too early to tell rn but i have a feeling that we'll eventually consider 2018 to be peak late 10s.

Neither. The peak of late 2010s culture will be 2020 probably.

This. We are no doubt 100% still in 2010s culture now.

2018. 2017 has a little residue from the mid 10s, 2019 was a pop culture shift to the early 20s(still part of the late 10s era though).

Your post aged a lot better than mine. That said looking back, I think 2018 was the peak. It was just full of everything that defined the late 2010's (2017-2019) such as Trump, Latin pop, Cardi B, Ariana Grande, Fortnite, the #MeToo and March for Our Lives movements, fidget spinners, social media challenges, etc.

2018 to first half of 2019 was peak late 10s. Meme culture, trap, fortnite, several social movements. In the second half of 2019, you start to see the seeds being planted for early 20s culture, most notably in music. Dua Lipa dropped Don't Start Now (disco) and The Weeknd dropped Blinding Lights (synthpop)—songs which, in my opinion, were the most influential in causing retro pop to be the dominant sound of the early 20s. Tik Tok also began to increase in popularity dramatically around this time. Generally though, besides COVID, late 10s culture and early 20s culture are not completely different, but there are some distinct changes.

Looking back I would say Late 2018 to early 2019 was peak late 2010s. But in its truest form the early 2020s started in March 2020.

I still don't think time's progressed enough to even differentiate the late 2010's VS the still ongoing early 2020's yet. Heck I still don't think life or culture is THAT different now than it was just 4 years ago, despite all the craziness that was 2020. The core 2010's feels so big, like the 80's. The 90's was more like the 80's 2.0 rather than its own thing. I feel like this decade's kinda the same thing so far, just the 2010's 2.0. But I can say by 2018 the mid 2010's vibes were mostly gone. I can already tell 2019 was more of a transition into the next decade, kinda like 2009 was. Therefore I'd say 2018 is the best answer to the original question

Since we're now in the post-pandemic phase in many ways it's like a return to 2019. The COVID virus is still around but we've just grown accustomed to living with it, especially since it's not so deadly like it was in the beginning. The 2010's were just generic so there wasn't really much to make it stand out other than smartphones and social media platforms, which now we just have newer versions of them. Musically trap/mumble rap isn't as popular as it was in the late 2010's but that still is the dominant style of the rap genre. I also thought that the Avengers: Endgame was the end of that franchise but they are still making more of those films. Also the political climate and the way people treat each other also started in the mid-2010's, just gotten worse since then.

I'll have to disagree on the 90's being 80's 2.0. Maybe the early 90's but overall those two decades were very distinct from each other.

But let's hope we can get away from COVID for good one day.
