Idk. I feel like every year has a transition. 2017 had the biggest transition this decade. The fact that Donald Trump entered the office makes it a big transition.

2013, nothing really happened in 2016 apart from the USA getting a new president and the pokemon go trend

I'd say 2013, because Electropop was dying, new shows like Orange is the new black, and house of card are becoming popular, Ariana Grande is entering the mainstream, Katy Perry and other electropop artists are switching to the Trap movement, EDM artists like Chainsmokers and DJ Snake, Vine, GTA 5, 8th Gen consoles, and lots more.
Late 2016 to Mid 2018 are basically hybrid years between the Mid and Late 2010s. Late 2016, we had a new president, but the overall culture still feels very Mid 2010s, despite the dark shadows making it darker as time passed by.

Calvin Harris and David Guetta were big EDM artists in the early 2010s. The Chainsmokers debuted in 2014 with #SELFIE, but even with that, they were considered a novelty act until early 2016.

This strikes me as being on the edge of decadeology.

2016. Donald Trump became president and that's pretty huge. But 2013 was a big change too.

I'd say 2013. 2016 itself wasn't all that transformational. It was still hipsters, EDM, teen pop, SJWs, and Obama. In fact, if you weren't following the Presidential election, the year was hardly distinguishable from 2014 or 2015. It did however set the stage for this nightmare era we are living in now. I'd say the most transformative year of this decade was 2017.

2016 was the most transitional and transformative year of this decade. Everything changed that year, most notably on November when Donald Trump became president.

2016 changes is much more than just the Trump election. The Pokemon go craze, the rise of SoundCloud rappers like Yacthy and Uzi, Youtube demonizing issues starting occurring more frequently, Instagram stories, Discord, Facebook/Instagram live etc. Lots of theses late 10s fads began in 2016.

Let's not forget Brexit too, another big change. Most notably was the change in pop culture. EDM started exploding in 2016, especially with the Chainsmokers constantly getting number one songs and everyone following. And dancehall was also a new trend that started that year. Songs that we hear today with the familiar electronic hook with the weird noises started in 2016. Slower and less upbeat songs started in 2016 too. We saw a lot of new artists getting popular in 2016. Mumble rap started exploding. If you look at the music charts in 2015, it sounds way different compared to today. And Vine announced they would be shutting down in 2016 too. It was definitely the year that put the mid 2010s in the coffin, and started late 2010s culture in many ways. The shift had its roots in 2015, but really got big in 2016.

there's barely any real difference between 2012 and 2014. the general aesthetic might've changed a bit but other than that i feel like it was mostly the same.
2015 and 2017 though had a big difference. the music was completely different with trap and latin pop becoming popular. plus we had a whole new president and i've always felt like the year a new president is inaugurated is the first year of a new era in culture (2017, 2009, 2001, 1993, etc... were all starts of new eras).

Honestly, I think there is a big and noticeable difference between 2012 and 2014, it feels like different distinct eras. But I also think there is a big and noticeable difference between 2015 and 2017 too. But just because the shift of 2016 was big, doesn't mean I discredit the shift of 2013. There were some noticeable changes at that time too and the shift was big then as well. I would say the change in aesthetic, fashion, and technology was a lot more profound in the shift of 2013. But the change in politics, world landscape, and music was a lot more profound in 2016. And everything else, for example pop culture in movies, TV, and celebrities was overall the same the entire decade.

In my opinion, the first half of 2012 was more like 2010. The second half was more like 2014.
The fall of 2012 was somewhat of a preview of the mid 10s. With songs like "Thrift Shop" by Macklemore, "Home" by Philip Phillips, and "Ho Hey" by the Lumineers, how could it not be?

IMO, 2012 as a whole felt like a 2011 extension, just with more indie music and better technology. 2013 has a much bigger change than 2012, especially by fall 2013.

2012 had zero links to the mid 2010s. The mid 2010s only started mid to late 2013.

I agree. 2011 and 2012 felt identical to me.
