Subject: The '2010s-ness of the '2010s Years

I take inspiration from The '90s-ness of the '90s Years from the 90s section

2019 is very 2010s unlike the 10th year of the last two decades. It's sort of like 1989, which was still super '80s and 2019 is super 2010s. The 2010s was a very consistent decade from start to finish culturally (just like the 1980s).

I think we are still about 5 years form being able to accurately answer this question.

1989 is kinda like a mixture of both the 80s and 90s, New Jack Swing and Hip Hop/Rap sound nothing like 1981-1987 (New Jack Swing & Hip Hop were already popular by ‘86 & ‘87, but the main genre was still hair metal, and Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, and MJ were still dominant). 1988/89 have zero New Wave influence, and dance-pop took over since late 1985, and the graphic designs are more patternish than the usual neon grid design, or the chrome text, mostly inspired by New Jack Swing, and Bush was already president. I’d say 1989 is more Bush 41 than Core 80s.

I agree, but I would say the New Jack Swing of the era until at least 92 still had the 80s gated drum sound. Interestingly enough, 80s styled New Wave had a brief revival in 1990 with Depeche Mode.

I think the second half of this decade is still too current to judge properly, but for the first 5 years I'd say:
2010: 60% 2010s-ness
2011: 65%
2012: 75%
2013: 90%
2014: 100%
There was a similar 00s thread a while back, and I think I ranked the first few years of that decade as having lower percentages, e.g. 2000 being something like 40% 00s. The 2010s decade seemed to 'come into its own' faster than the 2000s.
