Subject: 2012-2013 school year
Written By: mc98 on 01/13/19 at 9:06 am
This was my last year in middle school. 2012-2013 is the year I'm very nostalgic for after 2013-2014. Imo, this would be the last year with an early 2010s vibe to it.
Firstly, even though electropop declined this year, there was still plenty of songs of the genre that topped the charts such as Die Young, Diamonds, Scream & Shout, I Love It, Good Time, Don't Wake Me Up, Feel This Moment, and Heart Attack. Dubstep has been infused into pop music this year with songs like As Long As You Love Me, I Knew You Were Trouble, Come and Get It, and Too Close. There are a lot of piano ballads this year with Stay, Just Give Me a Reason, and When I Was Your Man.
Justin Timberlake made a huge comeback in the second semester. Macklemore made his debut with Thrift Shop capitalizing on the Hipster trend. You also heard silly novelty songs like Gangnam Style and Harlem Shake. Indie Folk was also massive this year with Ho Hey and I Will Wait. EDM was very big this year with Don't You Worry Child, Clarity, and Sweet Nothing. If you think about it, there was still Rock left in this year like Locked Out of Heaven, Radioactive, Try (Pink), Some Nights, Hall of Fame, and Light Em Up.
For games, this was arguably the biggest year for Minecraft, that game was absolutely huge this year. This was another year where First Person Zombie shooter games dominated the gaming industry. Candy Crush was also very huge, especially on the summer of that year.
Despite Instagram increasing in popularity this year, Facebook was still the #1 social media network for teens. I remember that it was very active throughout the whole year. It was the last school year where smartphones had skeuomorphism.
For fashion, this was the second big year for hipster. Even with the hipster trend, there was still a lot of people wearing colorful neon clothing in my school. Shaggy hair and buzzcut was still the common hair for the boys at my school.
Politically, this year was extremely tame compared to the mid-late 2010s. You saw an election between Obama and Romney and I remember it was a very boring election, I didn't even bother looking at the news to know what's happening.

I was in college during that school year. It was the first school year where I felt there was a true shift in pop culture from when I was in high school. It was especially apparent to me in spring 2013 when Macklemore and so-called "hipster hop" were the next big thing. :D

Romney vs. Obama was a blast on the internet, who remembers the absolutely iconic Epic Rap Battle video ;D? Best election ever.
Other than that, it was the year of Gagnam Style and Harlem Shake. High School just got suddenly very scary :o. EDM like Avicii and Max Garrix was a good way to cop. Dang, can't believe it's been 6 years since I've heard "Can't Hold Us" on the radio for the first time, "Locked Out of Heaven" performed on tv and classmates butchering "Diamonds" in karaoke ;D
Good year

I remember this year was the peak of top-text bottom-text memes such as Bad Luck Brian, Grumpy Cat, etc. There wasn't any post-ironic/dank memes that is big right now.

"Locked Out Of Heaven" - Rock? That's a helluva stretch, but I guess the definition of "rock" has shifted quite a bit in the past ~10 years.
Yes, I will say that the 2012-2013 school year felt like another era. Instagram was still in its infancy stages. It blew up later in 2013. Snapchat blew up sometime in 2014 (early), IIRC.
Twitter and Facebook were less political, all across the board. The 2012 election was smooth sailing compared to the last one. I remember Marco Rubio's "water break" gaffe, and remember laughing my A off.

Uhm? It's so clearly inspired by the reggae rock/new wave of the late 1970s.

Happy by Pharrell Williams was my favourite song of this school year.
Yeah this is before Instagram exploded. Snapchat was essentially nonexistent. Facebook hadn’t yet been discovered by middle aged mothers.

And Twitter wasn't so political.
Actually, Happy was a hit in the 2013-2014 school year.

Yeah, considering Happy was released in the last two months of 2013 and only exploded by 2014
???

Ah you're right. To be honest I am seriously struggling to think of any song I liked from either 2012 or 2013. I don't listen to much in the way of chart music tbh so I couldn't even tell you what songs were big at the time. Oops. ;D

I do recognise most of them. Couldn’t have told you the year though.
I think I’d pick Wake Me Up by Avicii. It was released in June 2013 and topped the UK charts in July 2013. July is still part of the UK school year.

Very weird school year... The 2012 portion of it was literally the worst time of my life. But the 2013 portion was when I was coming out of my depressive phase and having so much hope so it was leading me to the best time of my life and I turned 18 too. The 2013 portion of the school year was very good, the 2012 portion was horrible.
In terms of pop culture, the 2013 portion had a huge transition. February of 2013 I remember this forum was exploding with posts about new sounding songs on the radio like "Suit and Tie" by Justin Timberlake and everyone was freaking out over the changes and how hipster was exploding. It was definitely an exciting time for us pop culture geeks, I remember it clearly and this forum was so busy talking about the new trends. The new Justin Timberlake song had everyone excited by this new retro sound and finally an end to electropop (electropop was still around but definitely fading away at thus time). Anyone else who was on this forum back then remember? Around the same time, the word "Selfie" came into existence, and that word is still going strong today. Harlem Shake was big when people got over Gangnam Style. Just a new style of music kept coming like "Blurred Lines" and Thrift Shop was all over the radio in early 2013 too. So yeah the 2013 part of this school year was very transitional... I remember it clearly like it was yesterday. The 2012-2013 school year in general was just... weird...

2012 as a whole felt like a 2011 sequel.

I also agree with the 2013 portion being transitional. It still felt kinda early 2010s but it was exciting to see new stuff in that time.

When Royals by Lorde topped the charts, that was when the early 2010s died and we were ushered in a new era.

Yeah late 2013 was pretty much when we said goodbye to the early 2010s.
