Subject: Is MTV ending as a channel ? ( Becoming Third Party )
Written By: John Titor on 12/05/18 at 11:21 pm
Something I noticed, a lot of MTV proprieties are now moving to streaming only platforms.
Singled out is youtube only
The new Daria will be on Netflix
The new Celebrity Death Match will be on a third party streaming platform
Real World is on Facebook watch
This is the kind of thing that SEGA did during the Dreamcast towards the end (lending out its mascots on other platforms)
before shutting down for good as console company. I remember Sonic Advance was announced for GBA a month before
Sega announced it was ending the console business.

Maybe MTV would've had a massive comeback if it became some kind of hybrid between Spotify and Youtube.

They need to stop calling themselves MTV. Even the Disney Channel is more of an MTV than MTV.

MTV is doing really bad right now
they canceled TRL again and are promoting this new Lohan beach show.

Last I saw, TRL wasn't cancelled. It moved to the early a.m. hours last spring, with late-night reruns on MTV Classic. Nowadays it's pre-taped, so the L now stands for "List" instead of "Live."
I don't watch a whole lot of MTV proper, but once in a blue moon, I might find something on its sister channels MTV Live or MTV Classic. I watch it about as "often" as VH1 or PBS. Hell, I haven't watched VH1 in a long time. Probably not since Prince died, unless they had a movie on or something, like Space Jam.
If I do watch main station MTV, it has been TRL, Unplugged, the Movie (and now TV) Awards, the VMAs, and similar. I was interested in seeing The 90s House because a) they already did The 70s House years ago, b) nostalgia, and c) Lance Bass was the host.

TRL hasn't been on MTV in the AM in over 2 months, and all the other hosts have other jobs now lol The Instagram account for TRL
was changed from weekdays 8am to professional Stan account, so its just an online thing now. Unplugged isn't even on fridays anymore.
I assume that was canceled as well. Vh1 I hate now, its always Basketballs wives or something, VH1 used to be soooo good back in the 2000s
now its just crap and they stopped showing music videos as well as MTV.
I think MTV classic is going to get axed because it has the lowest ratings of any cable channel.
MTV 2 seems to be showing reruns of old sitcoms and no music sigh

Which makes me wonder why they don't change their name to RTV. ::)
For the record, I never watched the channel in its heyday because my household did not have cable tv in the 80's or 90's. But it still had some music oriented programming in the early 2000s, such as "Making The Video", which I found interesting because it gives a behind-the-scenes look as to how some music vids (for hit songs at the time) are put together.

I mean it's kind of pointless to show music videos on tv if everything is available on YouTube.

I, for one, would like to see MTV fold up it's tent and go. Maybe at long last this would signal the beginning of the end of the trash programming that has been it's stock and trade for over 20 years. "16 and pregnant" and other such garbage. All this glorifying of low class trashy lifestyles of the lowest common denominator.

Well, there has been an MTV Classic channel, which originally was VH1 Classic; there was also an MTV Hits channel which existed from 2002-2016 but was replaced by NickMusic. I think MTV2 is still on the air, but it, too, gradually started phasing out the music video showings.

Right you are; people prefer to watch them on the internet (whether it be on their computer, smartphone, etc) than on television.

Sometimes I even go there just for songs (with the visuals just being on-screen lyrics or album covers).

I'm serious. Often times I like to hear the song in full, even if it means reading the lyrics on screen. Sometimes a music video will edit the song and/or I don't care for what's in it. That's just my personal preference.

There has recent started on my television channels that plays only 80s songs, over the past few weeks it has been relaxing and a memory stirrer to watch.

That was the complaint from serious music listeners like myself, during the original heyday of MTV. The fact that the video was now force-feeding you images (which may or may not have anything to do with the song) rather than letting one's mind come up with the images. The musicians and songwriters themselves also often felt this way. And the emphasis shifted away from the art to the photogenic. You might say ARTIFICE took over from ART.

I hate it when either videos or even radio broadcasters "cut back" the run time for a song.
Used to drive me nuts when the full 17 minutes of In A Gadda Da Vida was whittled down to 3. >:(

Agreed.
Sometimes the imagery in a music video seems rather weird to me, and/or completely nonsensical.
And furthermore, I never even saw music videos for the first time until at least the early 90's, usually when I went to someone's house or a place where they had the channel on, because we didn't have cable tv in our household until the early 2000s. Moreover, I used to enjoy "Pop Up Video" around 1998+ because they'd show bubbles with information on how the video was created and what happened behind the scenes (even if they were on the screen for no more than 5 seconds and I had to speed-read what was in them). Those tidbits were way more interesting than the video itself in most cases.
Also, there are probably a few MV's that I actually don't mind because they're not too weird.

I can never tell if you're joking, your delivery is so deadpan. It's like you're calling up a theater and asking what time the midnight movie starts.
Think LOGICALLY. Here is a syllogism:
1) The MTV Video Awards exist on MTV
2) MTV no longer exists (hypothetically)
3) THEREFORE the MTV Video Awards no longer exist
Got it?
Got it!

Funny, I just changed the channel to MTV and it's showing Ridiculousness. A far cry from music videos or vintage MTV, but it's still MTV. Hey, at least they've got Larry King as a guest panelist.

I didn't care for those trashy programs myself. But in the early days of VH-1 they had some excellent programming, most
especially a little remembered one called "VH-1 New Visions" hosted by Nile Rodgers where he would interview musicians and they would play music in a casual kind of way. There were some really out there guests, very cutting edge. Laurie Anderson, Michael Hedges, Nona Hendryx, even blues legend John Lee Hooker. This was intelligent programming and I had high hopes for VH-1 for a while in the mid-late 80s. But the tide turned and I guess VH-1 (or parent company MTV) saw that the money was in the trashy programming. Other early programs that were good were "VH-1 Legends" and "VH-1 Storytellers".
