Not to get too graphic but I think it's to do with the exploding popularity of oral and anal sex (which people should use condoms for, yes even for oral sex!) and tossing salads (which people should use a dental dam for).

Here are the demographics as to who is contracting syph:
52% Men who only have sex with men
14% Men who only have sex with women
11% Women of all proclivities
6% Men who party both with men and women :o
17% Men for whom data is not available
Odd that men are overwhelmingly represented as recipients of the dreaded disease.

There are a lot of gay men who take PReP (which protects against HIV) who think you no longer need a condom anymore. They ignore that there are STDs other than HIV.
