Subject: Why doesn't a (professional) vintage tech service exist?
Written By: 90s Guy on 08/18/18 at 1:51 am
There is a whole cottage industry dedicated to vintage gaming and vintage computing. Many people of my generation enjoy playing older video and computer games in their native environment - on older computers and on CRT TVs. Some go as far as spending hundreds of dollars on Ebay on such systems. Question is, why hasn't a real company cropped up to fill this niche and take advantage of it commercially - design new 4:3 computers and TV sets and cash in on the retro tech wave?

That’s a good idea. I would spend on a new edition of VHS and a retro modern CRT 4:3 TV again

I just found out that LG launched a retro modern CRT TV in 2010. I hope more companies do that

It's like an untapped goldmine if marketed and budgeted correctly.

People aren't really willing to spend money on outdated technology when they can spend the same amount on new tech.

Why bother spending $100+ on a new CRT TV though? People can't even give the old ones away anymore (even though they are usually still in perfect working order) and they usually end up just throwing them away.
If you really want a CRT, you could either get one free off of Craigslist or you possibly find one at your local Goodwill or Salvation Army (or other) thrift store for probably less than $20, although I don't know if thrift stores even accept old TVs anymore. Either way, people would be more than glad to find someone to take those old TVs off their hands.

I hope I can find somebody can fix my tube-style TV when it eventually needs repairs.
It has been going strong since 2003 with no problems. 8)

I'm pretty sure there's nowadays already like a million retailers selling vintage shįte, because nostalgia is so huge and easy to cash on.

I love nostalgia, Mr.Shruggie and sometimes I love to relive the past by going on YouTube and watching videos or listening to some classic retro music on it.

They're not in high demand as you think. CRT TVs go for $20 at garage sales. How much is the production cost? Probably $200+ even if mass produced. It's more expesnive to produce than low-end HDTVs, that will still always be better than a CRT TV.
It's simply not profitable.

I just retired my old console t.v. that is 30 years old. It still works-even though the picture on it sucks (which is why I retired it). I put it on Craigslist hoping someone will buy it for $25.

You ought to put it up on eBay for $150 and call it a "vintage retro gaming monitor" and see if you can get some sucker gamer to buy it. ;D
