Subject: 2018 seems different than 2015-2017

Written By: christopher on 07/20/18 at 5:54 pm

I just saw a few newish MTV music videos and wow it looks like we're in a large very late 80's/early 90's nostalgia phase. Which is great. In fact it makes it look almost as cool and carefree as the early 2010's. I find many 2018 music videos evoke the 2010-early 2014 imagery. For example the colorful 90's clothes on Bruno Mars' video, Ellie G.'s latest music video would fit in her 2012-2014 era. Do you see it? I think it's escapism. In the 40's it was the war, in the early 10's it was the economic crisis, now it's politics, loneliness, terrorism and xenophobia.

Mid 2010's music was a lot more moody and depressing.

I dunno. Granted 2018 is not much like 2015 or 2017, but I think it's pretty close to 2016.

IMO 2018 is probably one of the most boring years of the 2010's culturally. This year really hasn't been that impressive so far. One of the biggest exceptions though is Drake and J. Cole's new albums. Ye vs. the People is also very good. This year really doesn't feel that different from 2017, it basically just feels like a more boring and downgraded version of 2017, which IMO was actually a very good year for music.

Well there are other threads already comparing 2018 to the early 10's. I agree. Also some cars that are upcoming seem more beautiful than 2015-2017 model years. From late 2014 to mid 2017 all the early 2010's models got fussy facelifts or were replaced with worse-looking generations. Now a better-looking crop of vehicles are coming from some of tgem. Only VWs, Skodas, and Fords are getting uglier now.

I would compare it more with the early 2000s esp 2001 2002

That would be a far better comparison

2014-2016 feel different from 2018, 2017 not really.

As soon as late 2016 came it felt different the cut off point is Nov 2016

2016 was probably this decade's defining and most stereotypical year.

2018 is different from 2014-2016 politically. From late 2016 onwards, I would say we are in the same era since.

Nokia was last seen in 2014, it came back in mid 2017 with a bang. It was number 3 manufacturer in the UK recently.

Posted on a Nokia Lumia 520.

2018 still feels the same as 2017 to me. Anything after 2016 feels current to me. 2018 like some had already mentioned on the site will more than likely be the ultimate late 10s year, so we'll be seeing signs of the next decade probably the end of this year or early next year.x

It feels similar to 2017 for me as well.  It's been kind of a boring year, generally speaking - seems that everyone I'd spoken to thought that this would be the year of a huge culture change, or a basic lead into early 2020s culture.  I wish that we would have a culture change.  This year's culture isn't bad, it's just... not fun. So boring.
