I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think 2018 actually wins the title for worst year for popular music of the decade., if it continues on like this in the mainstream charts until the end of the year. I thought no year would beat the terrible music of 2012, but I think 2018 might get it. I never said 2014 was a bad year for music. 2014 was one of the best years for music this decade imo. Probably my third favourite year overall (after 2013 and 2015).

I think 2017 is a better contender for that. 2018 hasn't been my favorite, but things seem a lot more 'fresh' and interesting in contrast to 2017. 2017 just seemed like a burnt out 2016 is retrospect, 2018 seems to be pretty devoid of mid 2010s musical trends, for better and worst.

I definitely agree. It is getting some competion with 2018 though because the music coming out this year is terrible. But definitely in terms of pop music, there is no era worse than the early 2010s for that. It had the most cheesiest, lifeless, over-produced, autotuned and annoying songs about partying that were constantly unlistenable. 2012 was the worst of the era for that.

For me 2018 in music so far has been neither amazing nor terrible. We were promised the summer of the decade and instead mostly got decent albums, nothing breathtaking/groundbreaking. Very few standouts tbh.

But to be honest, pop culture in 2018 has been boring and probably of this decade maybe things will get better in the later part of the year? Unlike 2016, for which I can count on my fingers how many songs I was truly impressed by, 2018 has already seen a lot of memorable classics, such as "No Tears Left to Cry", "For You (Fifty Shades Freed)", "One Kiss", "Finesse (Remix)", "Say Something", "She Loves Control", "Lost in Japan", "Chun-Li", "No Excuses", and so on and so forth.

I feel the same. I'm not sure that there has been a single memorable hit this year for me. Everything sounds like mild background noise at best, exceedingly terrible at worst.

It's not one of my most favorite years personally (2016 is actually quite up there for me as a favorite if we're going by this decade), but it's not also one of the worst as long as you know where to look.
