Subject: Is EDM dying?

Written By: ofkx on 07/07/18 at 6:44 pm

EDM used to be everywhere, especially in the mid-2010s . Even non-EDM songs had some EDM influences.

There's been a relatively small amount of popular EDM songs this year, and they're slower and barely sound like mid-2010s EDM.

Even popular EDM artists like The Chainsmokers, David Guetta, and Diplo seem to be moving on to other sounds.

Could this be a sign of EDM dying, or at least changing?

There’s a new generation of DJs without any doubt, but at least the early-mid 2010’s style like Animals by Martin Garrix or Levels by Avicii is totally finished

Just because EDM producers moved out to other EDM genres, doesn't mean EDM is on its way out. What kind of logic is that ???

And EDM is absolutely not even slowing down. These two songs are absolutely everywhere right now:

M3mJkSqZbX4

Notice how "The Middle" would how fit perfect in the mid-2010s between "Where Are Ü Now" and "Lean On".

This board's constant exageration of everything ;D

Animals by Martin Garrix
"Big Room House" never caught on besides that one song anyway :P

"FRIENDS" doesn't sound like mid-2010s EDM which is my point though ???. I can't argue about "The Middle" because you're actually right but how many popular songs that sound like it have you heard in 2018?
To just further my point, 3 out of the top ten songs of 2016 were EDM. There's currently only 3 songs in the top FIFTY songs that are EDM (One Kiss which currently sits at 36, FRIENDS at 22, and The Middle at 12) and only one of them even entered the top 10 (The Middle which peaked at 5).

I'm not really a listener of EDM, so I do not really know its status as of this moment.

EDM is still going very strong in 2018. Definitely the sound of the decade.

Trap and EDM are still huge.

EDM was fairly weak in the mid 2010s actually. The whole electronic sound took a little break in 2014 (got replaced with slower ballads) then it started exploding again in late 2015 which would be known as the "late 2010s sound".

This decade's sound of EDM is probably coming to a close, but history shows that each decade spawns new and distinct genres of EDM, so I wouldn't ever say that EDM as a whole is dying. In the 70s, there was Synth-pop, Disco, and Hip Hop. The 80s brought Detroit Techno and Chicago House. The 90s birthed so many new forms of EDM that I wouldn't be able to list them all. As much as the EDM crowd wants you to believe that EDM has never been more diverse, I wouldn't really say that's the case in the mainstream as a lot of this decade's EDM sound comes from 4 genres: Electropop, Dubstep, Trap, and late 00s Trance/Electro House.

No. Well, in its current form, yes. But it’s evolving. Electronic dance music is not going anywhere, and pop/rock will continue to have electronic influences for the foreseeable future.

This is fine by me. Turntables, DJs, synthesizers, that’s the new sound in popular music. But it will evolve and change and take on various different shapes and forms.

I'm like the only one on this forum who doesn't care about pop music so my opinion doesn't mean much :P But from what I noticed, it seems like electronic dance music, which dominated the charts 2008-2016/2017, has taken a backseat to rap and other urban genres in 2018.

I don't think so.  Personally I think it's getting better.  I do think it's prominence in Top 40 is on the decline and probably will be much less in the 2020s.  That's not necessarily a bad thing though.

To be honest, the worst era in history for electronic music in my opinion was in the mid '10s.  EDM was niche through most of the 2000s and some of the best stuff came out of that decade.
