Subject: How would you describe comedy today?
Written By: Mat1991 on 06/27/18 at 7:35 pm
What is the general tone and feel of humor these days?
I would say its more subtle, satirical, and darker given the current political climate and state of affairs.
It definitely feels different from the last decade, when it was more edgy and cringey. Remember '00s internet humor? When every other joke was either a gay or "tranny" joke? :P

I know, I agree, comedy back then used to funny but now comedians bring up stuff about the President and other political stuff.

Dude I've noticed that. Like every Saturday Night Live episode is about political jokes now mocking Trump and other issues going on around Congress and the country. That tells you how angry this country is right now with the times we're living in.

I don't even pay attention to politics and I've noticed that too. My parents always watch Saturday Night Live and it's literally all about political jokes and stuff.

You almost can't do comedy anymore because it will offend somebody.

Dank memes & absolute golden age for wittiness
I was going to say memes, although I prefer spicy over dank.
Also, making fun of people's mothers is off limits.

Boring, unfunny, wacky, cheesy.
All in all, comedy nowadays is absolutely terrible.

People say lol less than they did in the early 2000s, which must mean less people are laughing out loud.
You also never hear about people ROFLing anymore, which means there's never any drop dead funny humour. PMSL is for the history books.
The only thing I noticed an increase in is people laughing their asses off (LMAO). With all the butt injection these days it's to be expected.

Whatever happened to comedians like the late Buddy Hackett, Jerry Lewis, George Carlin, etc... I know they're all deceased but we had comedians back then that hardly ever brought up political stuff.

"memes" is the better word to describe comedy today. Even short comedy clips on Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat too.

Depends on what comedy you're talking about. Mainstream comedy is unfunny asf nowdays they've just gotten too political and all they do is talk about how much they hate trump. A lot of people do too we've come to have a laugh not to reaffirm what we already know.

I agree. Political humor can work, but nowadays it's too on the nose. It would also be nice to have some non-political humor as well.

I would say comedy is mostly comprised of contextual one-liners, like what you see in movies like The Last Jedi and Guardians of the Galaxy. Otherwise, comedy is mainly just a bunch of predictable jabs at the patriarchal asses of the world, unable to hide its political nature rather than just the need to spread some lighthearted fun. Sweeping satires are rare and generally lack the wit they would have mustered in the past.

Mostly visual memes and viral tweets, but more recently meme videos with sarcastic captions. I could post some examples but I'm too tired lol

What is comedy? Sorry, I think I forgot what it means to find something funny without it potentially insulting anyone...

How about comedians that bring up political humor sometimes such as people like Lewis Black, Bill Maher, and Jerry Seinfeld?
