Subject: Was anyone else disappointed by the mid 2010s?
Written By: Early2002 on 06/17/18 at 7:58 pm
Mid 2013- 2016
I always thought the mid 2010s were going to have that mid 90s/ mid 2000s relaxed feeling,
as we saw how the mid 2010s played out they were anything but that. In fact a DARK DARK tone
came on that portion of the decade around late 2014, it was very disappointing that the mid 2010s
didn't follow the vibe established by the decades prior.
Was not really a fan of everything being dark just to be dark. However I did predict that the music would
start to even out from the Electropop of the early portion of the decade as electropop died, similar to how Teen pop
died out fast in 2002.

Not sure why I'd be disappointed in a time period that I was alive for.

Man, we must be living in the Dark Ages. First the late 80's are dark because of the high crime rate, then the early 90's are because of the L.A riots, then the mid 90's are dark because of the OJ trials, then the late 90's are dark because of Columbine and Y2K, THEN the early 2000's are dark because of 9/11, then the mid 2000's are dark because of Hurricane Katrina, THEN THE LATE 2000's ARE SOMEHOW DARK BECAUSE OF THE CREATION OF THE IPHONE, THEN THE EARLY 10'S ARE DARK BECAUSE OF SANDY HOOK, AND THEN THE MID 10'S ARE APPARENTLY DARK DARK BECAUSE OF ISIS AND THE DEATH OF A MUSIC GENRE, THEN THE LATE 10'S ARE DARK BECAUSE OF SCHOOL SHOOTINGS AND TENSION RELATING TO POLITICS, AND THEN THE EARLY 2020'S WILL BE DARK BECAUSE OF THREADS LIKE THIS WHICH WILL MAKE THE SUN WANT TO DIE. Why do you guys call every time period dark? Its getting pretty ridiculous.

The late 70's were dark because of Jonestown and the 1979 Energy Crisis.
The early 80's were dark because of John Lennon's assassination.
The mid 80's were dark because of the McDonald's shooting and the Challenger explosion.

For me, the Early 2010s were way away more dark and one-dimensional than the Mid 2010s. Just sayin' ::)
But I LOVED 2014! That year will go down as a classic. :) 2015 & 2016 were if-ish

I don't prefer anything after 2014. 2010-2014 was the best period.

Why would anyone be disappointed with the mid 2010s? It had good music, TV shows, amazing movies, and most importantly of all, VINE MEMES (R.I.P).

If you had too high expectations for the mid-2010's that didn't turn out the way you wanted it to be, you're obviously going to be disappointed. OP, the expectation of the mid-2010's being "mid 90s/ mid 2000s relaxed feeling" is not only high but very unrealistic. We are never going to get the mid-90's and mid-2000's back again.
The best advice I can give you for not being disappointed next time is don't expect anything and let the era play out the way it's supposed to.

I lean more towards this than not. There's something about the changes that I'm liking. I'm actually starting to get a little jealous of POTENTIAL Gen Z culture. Not this Soundcloud trap that's really popular now but what could arise after. Something tells me I'm gonna get disappointed by the mid-2020s tho.
I have a feeling if the Dems don't get a big leg up, that'll dampen my good mood too.

Not at all. It was the best era since the 2000s. Both my life and pop culture was very solid. By the way 2013 belongs with the early 2010s (though that was an amazing year). The mid 2010s are actually 2014 - 2016, specifically late 2013 to early 2016 culturally and mid 2013 to late 2016 numerically.

I graduated college in 2008. It was an awful time to be starting out with the economy in free fall.
In terms of the mid '10s, I really didn't like them. They were an awful time for my personal life. I was in the worst depression of my life from late 2012 through 2016. As for them being "dark" I can see that simply because of how polarized our society became in that era and the fact there was so much violence. Obama's first term didn't seem to have the kind of polarization and all-out culture war that his second term did.
There were things I liked about the mid '10s though. I really liked hipster culture and the promotion of individualism that came from it. I think overall that did a lot of good for our society and killed the overly conformist culture that dominated the 2000s.

In my opinion, the mid '10s were a very preteen/teen oriented time, especially the music, so if you are that age I can definitely see why you liked it. 2012-early 2017 were for Generation Z what 1998-2002 was for Millennials.

Same. I love the mid-2010s and I was in my early 20s. The late 2010s aren't as good in my opinion. They're better in my personal life, but socio-politically, I can't imagine myself wanting to return to this nightmare era in the future (other than to be 24-26 again, but that has nothing to do with the late 2010s itself). Technology and television also seems to be in an awkward phase where we know the next big thing is coming, but it isn't here yet. I think the early 2020s will be more exciting. :D

I wasn't necessarily disappointed, but I was incredibly bored by the culture of the mid-2010s. It seemed like there was nothing interest going on in the world, and 2014, 2015, and 2016 weren't exactly the best times in my personal life.
