Subject: 2014

How did you like 2014? What are some things you remember from that year and how did the year go for you? I always feel like 2014 is too easily forgotten this decade. 2014 was my third favourite year of the decade, pretty solid and good year both pop culturally and personal-life wise. Music was good too I believe. Only thing I didn't like is at the very end of the year (December) the oil price dropped and the economy collapsed to a huge depression even bigger than '09 and we still feel the effects today, and some violent protests started brewing later in the year.

What are some ways 2014 is different from today? I think in music there was a lot less EDM influence in 2014 and there was a large amount of slow pop like Sam Smith. The trumpet/saxophone trend was pretty big in 2014 too. Basic teen pop was big with Taylor Swift releasing her album 1989. I think fashion is identical to now. Politics-wise it was more stable and the vibe felt a lot more bright that year than now (though it was still pretty dark in 2014 oddly enough). I remember tech was actually cool back then and every smartphone upgrade was significant and fun to watch. What are some other differences between 2018 and 2014?

It was fun for me too, I had a unlimited cinema pass, brought monthly and I could see all the films at a certain chain of cinemas, to watch any film any time as many times as you like.

2014 is definitely a year I feel like I took for granted. I've always talked about how boring this year was for me, but looking back it really wasn't that bad. Even the music wasn't that bad and some of it even makes me a bit nostalgic. It's just that I didn't do anything during that summer and my grandfather died in September of that year. But other than that, it wasn't that bad for me.

2014 was an okay year for me. It was the beginning of my teenage years and it was around that time when I REALLY started to not like school. It was also around that time when I started to become more social. 2014 was also the year I created my very own Xbox live account. I remember staying up until 2 am just to play Minecraft and Destiny with my friends. ;D Man did I hate my middle school though. For some reason I don't really remember mush else from that year. Wish I could go back and relive that year at an older age.

Why did he held back?

In a similar vein, at my last employment, there was a work colleague the same age as me, and right from day one we were the best of friends, we had the same interest in music, comedy, and sport. We would about the 60s, 70s and 80s, and the younger generation of staff would look on amazed.

2014 was the last great year for me, and the last year of my core childhood. I had a great 10th birthday party, Got 2DS for christmas that year, went to my Grandmother's birthday party June of that year, Being addicted to the Super Smash Bros game that came out that year also. Fifth Grade later that year fine also and nostalgic songs like Happy were popular that year also and Summer of 2014 was pretty awesome.

Eh, not wildly. One thing that was different though is that boy bands like 1D were really big with girls when I first started middle school. I don't think they were as big in August 2015 though? Also, Snapchat was starting to get popular when I started middle school, but it wasn't super big. Most people I know first made their snapchat account in very late 2014/early 2015.

I remember 2014 as a baaaaaad year, but it was mainly just the first half (continuing from the second half of 2013 which is also forgettable). The second half was when things started to improve (since it couldn't get much worse), but 2015 was better. 2014 actually did have some good music like Sam Smith, "Rude" by Magic, "Summer" by Calvin Harris, and "Boom Clap" by Charli XCX.

I probably annoy some people with my constant bitching of this particular year ;D. But yeah, those were really horrid times for me for personal reasons and I'm really disappointed the last year of my minority was so plain bad :(.
It was also year I felt completely disconnected from pop culture and wanted to flee it like the pest, and this only a year after I was really getting into it. A lot of the hits back then really felt completely unpleasant (and still do to this day, really), but I at least it sure wasn't 100% plain bad, especially a few summer hits like "Am I Wrong", "Summer" or "Rather Be" are quite good.

Take note I always consider 2012-2015 as the best 4 year stretch for cinema of the 21st century so far. Now, out of all of these 4 years 2014 is probably the least good or the most underrated, but still a great lineup of movies though. Still better than 2010-2011 and 2016. 2018 is going great so far but I still can't judge on that year yet until it's over.

I guess 2014 isn't as memorable to most people on here since you guys were already well into your 20s or either in yall core childhood, but 2014 is a memorable year for me since I graduated high school, went to college, moved back to NY for a year and eventually moved back due to issues I don't really want to talk about (I did made a video on it called my frist year of college on my youtube channel).  I agree that 2015 felt quite different than 2014 espically from early 2014, I thought it was just me since I was still in high school at the time but 2014 was when the wii-u was at it's peak and the Ps4 had pretty much nothing but multiplats that year. 2015 was when the 8th generation really started to kick off for the Ps4 and Xbox while the Wii U was starting to see it's nail on the coffin with E3 2015.

2014 to me was pretty much 2013 part deux.  2013 and 2014 are the two most identical years this decade in my opinion.  Both years were terrible for me in my personal life as those were my ex-gay conversion therapy years.  After all that I was doing to make my parents happy (I moved back to Oklahoma and did conversion therapy) I still remember my dad yelling at me about not doing enough and one time for drinking a beer.  Everyone around me was absolutely freaking out about gay marriage and Obama's support of gay rights.  I was pretty much unable to participate in the pop culture of that era except for the music, which I wasn't a huge fan of.  2014 was the peak of neo-teen pop.  Early Ariana Grande, 5 Seconds of Summer, Selena Gomez, Cher Lloyd, Becky G, #Selfie era Chainsmokers, etc dominated that year.

And oh yeah...Guardians of the Galaxy was THE movie of 2014.  Nothing else comes close.

When it comes to pop culture, 2014 was approaching peak hipster.  Today, the hipster fad is on the decline (it's roughly where emo/scene was in 2010).  2014 was also the peak of neo-teen pop, a genre that has since fallen out of the mainstream as artists like Ariana Grande have become more mature.  Politics as a whole was more liberal in 2014, but the SJW and alt-right dichotomy was already established and the seeds of Trumpism had already been sown.  However, there was still optimism at the time that liberalism and progress would prevail and it was just a matter of time before reactionary conservatives would concede their loss of the culture war.  How wrong everyone was.  In terms of tech, there isn't a lot of differences.  3D movies were much bigger back then and UHD had yet to really catch on but for the most part, things were similar.  The novelty of smartphones had already worn off by 2014.

For me, it was fun! Sure, it's not as good as 2009-2012, but it's still far better than today. Personal Life wise, I was in 4th grade, and I had a lot of friends who I had fun with, as I moved to a new school, it felt very refreshing, and we'd have tons of fun going outside and play, and the school experience was fun as well, we were learning about Operating systems and playing recorders, and I travelled to Calgary and Banff, it was amazing. We also went to Regina frequently from our hometown when we were bored. I'd play outside like any 90s kid, but indoors, I'd play Roblox or Minecraft, or watch tech videos from Android Authority, MKBHD, Techsmartt, EAP, etc. Tech destruction videos made me laugh and cringe at the same time, Techrax  ;D

Pop culture wise, it's fun too! Vine was still around, I had so much fun watching KingBach, Nash Grier, Thomas Sanders, etc. Heck, Lele Pons was better back then too, in my opinion at least. It helped brighten my bad days. For music, it was alright. Ariana Grande was still in her first wave popularity with Break Free, Problem, Bang Bang, etc, and to be honest, I loved those songs. Iggy Azalea was at her peak, Fancy and Work were popular, Charlie XCX was still around, especially Lorde. Jason Derulo songs also brightened my day. Yes, the lyrics were kinda disgusting, but listening to Wiggle and Trumpets made my day, I did like the beat. Am I wrong was my ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE SONG, it was very motivating and dancy. Meghan Trainor, eh, I started off not liking her songs, but I grew out of it. For R&B, songs from Sam Smith and John Legend made us emotional, and of course, Say something. Hip Hop was different back then too, Chris Brown was still around, and the DJ Mustard sound was dominant within Hip Hop, with Loyal, Came To Do, etc. Again, the lyrics in Dont tell em by Jermih are dirty, but the beat and flow was smooth. I also listened to a lot of Trap EDM songs from Trap Nation, and EDM from Calvin Harris and Zedd. Early 2010s artists like Katy Perry and Rihanna remain popular, and they were successful adapting to the Trap sound, migrating from Electropop. Dubstep shines its last light with Skrillex's Recess, but for me, it paid off. I also enjoyed watching movies like Big Hero 6, Frozen, Malificent, Lego Movie, Guardians of the Galaxy, Interstellar, and lots more. I didnt play GTA 5 until 2017, but I remember when people were soo hyped about it.

Overall, it's a fun year for me, just not a perfect one.

2014 was so juvenile and kid-oriented I have no doubt it will be beloved and fawned all over by '10s kids in the future, but it was not easy to be a moody teen going through rough times in it. It was so overly obnoxious and fakely pastel. 2015 cancelling that out with adult oriented 50 shades of Gray-style grittiness and gloom as soon as it arrived felt incredibly refreshing.

The way you feel about 2014 is how I felt about 2013. Although pop culturally looking back I think most people will prefer 2013 over 2014-present in a heartbeat, I still hated 2013 because of the fact that it was my junior year and a lot of the pop culture changed that year that I was used to throughout 2010-2012. Slim95 hated 2012 and that was his junior year.

What are some other differences between 2018 and 2014?

you are Indian or paki aint you?

Music was very different from now. Pop music dominated the charts in 2014 even more than Trap/Hip-hop dominates the charts today. Out of the top 50 songs of the year only SIX of them were Hip-Hop songs (only two songs really because the rest of the six sound a lot more pop than hip-hop) and the highest Hip-Hop  song was only at #30. There really wasn't a lot of variety IMO
2014 music was mostly this:

And about what you said about EDM having less influence in 2014 than now. I don't fully agree with you. EDM in 2014 wasn't as big as 2015-2017 but it was still pretty popular. It sounded a lot more like typical early 2010s EDM than mid-late 2010s EDM though:

Also, I wouldn't say 2014 fashion is identical to 2019. There's actually a pretty noticeable difference and 2014 was very hipster-influenced and flannel was everywhere. Another difference I noticed lately was that skinny jeans are out in 2019 while they were the default fit in 2014

Fashion now is very '90s/early '00s, or at least heading that way. You could take someone from 2019 and put them in 1999 and they wouldn't really look too out of place:

'Scuse me, but if we gonna mention EDM and 2014 in the same phrase, then not mentioning Robin Shulze is a big offender since his breezy proto-Tropical House took the charts by storm around the summer!

I'll argue that 2014 was quite varied as far Pop standards go. Besides the obligatory Pop, Hip Hop and EDM, it also had some Soul ("Happy", Sam Smith, Aloe Blacc), Alternative (Echosmith, Bastille), R&B (Jason Derulo, comeback Beyoncé) and Alt-Pop (Lorde and Tove Lo, both replaced by Halsey and Billie Eillish now).

Oh, I guess 2014 EDM is more mid-10s than than I thought ;D. I would've included him but this is honestly the first time I've heard any of his music from 2014 :P

None of those EDM songs were on the radio. Today we have EDM on the radio. When I talk about music I am talking about mainstream pop music on the radio like American Top 40.

I liked "Rude" by Magic and "Happy" by Pharrell. Overall the year doesn't stand out too much for me, except I was partying a lot.

Pop culture wise I think 2014 is one of the best years of the decade. Probably the third best after '13 and '15. But there were a lot of sad slow songs that were popular that year I remember. A lot of Sam Smith and John Legend.

It's funny how after Brazil lost so spectacularly, the country has gone to sh*t in so many ways right afterwards starting with that recession. Germany can never be forgiven.

They are a developing country still and yet they accepted to host both a world cup and the olympics in the span of TWO years, a recession was inevitable.

Brazil were jeered by their own fans in their opening Copa America game against Bolivia despite winning 3-0.

Yes, the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics were both huge sensations here! We absolutely dominated in hockey :D

2014 was a good year for Canadian sports in general. That was a really good year for the Toronto Raptors, although obviously not as good as 2019. ;) And I thought I was gonna turn straight for Eugenie Bouchard (tennis), she put up an admirable fight!

The World Cup in the summer was far far better than the 2018 one.

A great year. It makes me sad to think how long ago it is now because it feels like yesterday. Social life was getting better and I liked the pop culture too! It was a wild year as i was partying a lot, but I think it will always be one of the highlights of the 2010's for me.

I must be one of the only few people who actually like 2014. In terms of personal life, I did a lot that year like travel to California for vacation. I pretty much liked all of 2014 except for the later part of it like somewhere around November or December. In terms of pop culture and music, it wasn't that bad as I thought, but I thought 2013 was a little better.

You are not alone. I really liked 2014 too. One of the best years of the decade after 2013 and 2015 at least pop-culture wise.

Culturally it was good but nothing special. That's why it's not talked about much. To me there were still trace amounts of early 2010's vibes this year, specifically in the summer. Personally other than a life-changing trip I took to another state, the one thing I will always remember this year for is the year I became a Brony. I was obsessed & most of my friends got into it too.

When I hear 2014, I think of DJ Mustard.

YES every hip hop song had that looping "Hey!" sound effect
