Subject: Older fashion trends you want to see revived in the 2020s?
Written By: 90s Guy on 05/30/18 at 11:31 am
Every decade since the 1970s takes a little something from the decades prior to it in terms of fashion. For example, flare jeans in the late 90s and early 00s came out to replicate in a more modern form the bellbottoms of the 1970s. What's something from a previous decade you would like to see make a return in the 2020s (albeit in some modified, modern form)?

I wouldn’t call what we had this decade grungey. Hipster fashion is its own species.

Mmm... bell-bottoms made a small comeback among women this decade for a few years (around 2015-2017, I think.) I don't think I'd want disco fashion to make a full-fledged disco revival, though. I think bell-bottoms only look good on certain people and certain body types, and I'd like for us to have something new in the 2020s.

Most fashion is just a rehash of previous decades so I don't see what's the big deal.
Also, I feel that we've come to the point where there is going to be no real defintive fashion style to decades.
Everyone nowadays pretty much dresses how they want to.
While there is certain fashion trends now, most of them are based on previous decades. For example, I was watching the 1996 movie, The Rock and one of the actors in film had a man bun.

A decade having a definitive look in fashion adds nostalgia to it. Like, Baby Boomers can look at their 1960s/1970s photos and have a laugh about how wild they dressed; Gen Xers have a sentimental laugh about big hair was in the 80s and how horrible Christmas type sweaters were the norm in cold weather; and so on. The last decade just has been this formless blob in terms of fashion.

It's a pain in the butt. It gets in the way and when it gets hot it will become a big puffball and I can only keep it in it's place tied up in a braid. That and I can't have just any kind of haircut. Most layers I've experimented with turned out to be unflattering and the layers like to separate.

I strongly disagree. The '00s had skater boy and emo fashion, and the '10s have hipster, streetwear, and the whole "IG baddie" look. Sure, there might've been some '80s and '90s comebacks, but very decade had recycled trends, and others have already pointed out that the '90s had some recycled '70s fashion.

This is true for teens and young adults I understand that, but there used to be a time when everybody all demographics participated in specific fashion trends based off their culture or what was considered popular for "their race". I've been told by elders that the 90's were the last FULLL decade for that, and since the 2000's everybody tends to dress up however they want to like Panther mentioned earlier. Also, I noticed a lot of the fashion trends of the 2010's have more of an internet culture vibe or are influenced by social media. Yes, because everyone of every age dressed the exact same, no such thing as "young movements".
People on this forum in particular constantly whine about the fashion of today lacking either individuality or a singularity, like jeez ugh.

Really in a sense fashion trends, as we know them now, are a relatively new thing. Until around the 40s/50s teen culture didn't exist. Even teenagers weren't really recognized as a separate social group. In the 40s you start seeing isolated race based trends like the Latin Zoots, but young people by and large dressed the same as older people. It's only when you get to the 50s that teenagers begin separating themselves from adults in dress, with Elvis and rock and whatnot. Greasers etc Beats, etc. Yes, you had the Jazz culture in the 20s but that was adults, not teens. It's really only in the mid 50s where people under 30 began separating themselves looks wise from people above, and then with the explosion of more separate identities in the 60s (racial, sexual, etc) you see even more variety in clothes between different peoples of varying age groups and races.
Prior to this you had things established largely along class lines. Historically for example free men wore long hair and the slave or serf wore their hair short as a marker of their social station. Kings and Queens even as late as the 19th century set the tone for what people wore. Then in the 20th century, celebrities replaced kings, queens and Presidents as the harbingers of new fashion ideals.
But at one time, trends lasted longer. The top hat was popular for almost 200 years before going out of style. The fedora was popular for around 150 years as well. Men and women's fashion didn't begin making wide leaps until the 1920s. Even then, it was slow; you look at a picture of people in casual dress in 1925 it wouldn't be that much different from 1945.
So maybe this thing where different decades had their own look was a fluke, an anomaly historically and now it's over. Who knows.

What has any of this stuff to do with anything I just said
Look at what I have in bold, this is proof that this decade (and the previous decade too) has fashion revivals from all previous decades, which is what people mean when they say people have been dressing up how ever they want to now. Yes the 90's had the 70's revival but that was only 10% of all the original fashion styles the 90's had. This is what wikipedia and cited articles have. It didn't come from me bro so don't blame me. ;)

I will ask my question again: What has that anything to do with what I said. I was talking how people are strangely incoherent about their claims on 2010s fashion in general (people don't participate into trends vs. everyone dresses the same, both of which I've heard so many times it creates like a clashing consensus in my head), and you quickly choose one side to get into the usual hackneyed 90s vs now debates using a Wikipedia article (cuz MUH NINETIES ARE FLAWLESSSS!!), which wasn't my point at all.
The "Everyone of every age group participated to fashion trends" and here now, made up percentages like "10% of original fashion styles" are all grossly exagerated hyperbolics which makes me doubt if there's any point to discuss further.

So maybe this thing where different decades had their own look was a fluke, an anomaly historically and now it's over. Who knows.
Or maybe just a bunch of widely spread fashion trends thanks to fast mass concuption that wear off (pun intended) over time and gets dated to look back after a certain while so easier to associate with a certain time period, as well as a concept people are weirdly obsessed about and, certain people on this website in particular, worship like a god? ???

I don't trust anyone who uses Wikipedia as their source.

To me Wikipedia is fine since all the info on the pages are cited/sourced from other websites, books, and videos. Wiki is mostly a paraphrased source, but the links to the actual fully detailed sources are always given.

While Wikipedia is useful for writing scientific papers thanks to the article sources bank it is, in case of the "2010s in fashion" article in particular it uses quite a lot of either dead sources or weird one-sided observatory ones based on one-event stuff like forced upon season collections, celebrities at fashion weeks and even trends at runaways, giving off a bit of a nonsensical hodgepodge feel. As if the article was written by aliens observing human way of clothing based off only important fashion events ???
It honestly needs to be revamped by someone

I think the 2020s will have a 2010s revival and everyone will dress hipster.
