I saw this on the TV news the other night. I cannot decide. ::)

At first, I heard nothing but Yanny and I didn't know how on earth people heard Laurel. But then I heard Laurel and I was like so proud of myself. And now all I hear is Laurel.  ;D ;D ;D I think I'd have to go with Laurel as well.

To cut the story short...

Using the link you provided, it's sounds like YANNY to me.

However, that's not the original source.  If you go back to the original source

the guy is obviously saying LAUREL.

I think part of the reason some people hear YANNY (and, strangely, I haven't seen this possibility mentioned in ANY of the news articles or various expert analyses I've looked at so far) is that when it went viral online, whoever posted it must have used some kind of really cheap crappy recording software that cut off the low frequencies.

If you listen to the original source (https://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/laurel) and listen with a good pair of earphones attached to a computer with a good sound card (and if your high frequency hearing isn't too far gone), you can indeed hear YANNY on top of the LAUREL if you mentally filter out the low frequencies and concentrate only on the high frequencies.
