Subject: How many of you here actually like trap rap?

Written By: antidote on 05/17/18 at 6:26 pm

Trap rap is actually pretty enjoyable if you don't take it too seriously. I feel like a lot of people judge it relative to deeper genres, but it's really just fun music that you're supposed to approach with the same mindset as you would something like disco. I also can't think of another genre that's introduced as many new sounds and cultural phenomena as trap rap has in the 2-3 years it's been mainstream (I'm still in high school, so maybe this part is more noticeable to me than other users here). EDM maybe, but pop music has sounded almost exactly the same since 2008 and there's pretty much zero original innovation in rock music anymore (besides indie rock, but that's arguably its own thing, so I won't lump it in with rock in general).

It's not like disco, disco was very danceable while trap is plodding and boring, also trap has been in the mainstream probably as long as you've been alive ;D. It's old as heck and stale, I thought we'd get beyond the whole southern rap thing of the late 90s/2000s but it is still going strong 20 plus years.

I literally remember listening to trap in 2005 on my first job as a security officer, didn't like it that much then either but at least it was new then, back then it was rappers like t.i., young jeezy, Gucci Mane on the radio. Trap was with those other southern rap styles popular like crunk, chopped and screwed,  snap, ect. Trap is like the energizer bunny it just won't go away after all these years.

I mean obviously trap itself isn't new. But the whole subgenre of Soundcloud trap rap is.

And eh, there's actually a lot of variety with trap rap. Obviously a ton of trap rappers sound the same but that happens with every genre that blows up when everyone wants to make their mark. Lil Uzi Vert has his own style distinct from XXXTentacion, who has his own style distinct from Future, etc.

Well, trap itself is great. It can be very energetic if the artist does it correctly. I don't listen to the people who are pushing the genre forward in mainstream but I enjoy trap songs similar to the ones from Lupe's "Drogas".

I don't mind it at all.

I mean, definitely the beginning of it with T.I and Young Jeezy. If Meek Mill is trap, that's the trap I truly dislike.

Dark Horse - Katy Perry ft. Juicy J is an example of a really good song that has trap music in the background.

I mentioned the exact same thing on another thread. Future and especially Young Thug ruined trap and caused everybody in the mainstream to believe all trap is "mumble rap".

The problem with trap is not the purpose or the intention of it, the problem is it literally sounds bad and not enjoyable at all to my ears. Something like disco can actually sound enjoyable even if it is not deep, however with trap it just sounds bad and that's the problem. It sounds like weird noise, not good at all whether the genre is meaningful or not it isn't catchy or danceable for me.

Most trap 2016+ sounds bad. For me, it's mostly because the tone these rappers use nowadays. They sound bored. And the worst part are tbose God awful alibs they use every 5 seconds. It's literally one of the most annoying things I've ever heard in my life.

I find most Trap to be boring and annoying (especially the mumbling). Trap has gotten so oversaturated, it's ridiculous, it seems most of the songs (especially in Hip Hop) in the past couple years has to have a Trap beat. Don't get me wrong, there are a few good Trap songs out there but, I have become so tired of it.

I'll be honest, I have a hard time pinning down exactly what the trap sound is.

I have not tried to listen, and there again, I have not knowingly heard it. I am wondering, shall I keep it that way?

Call me crazy but 2 Live Crew still reigns with their poignant lyrics.

I don't think it would have mattered. Most of the casuals are in it just for the beats. Like, they don't care about what the artist is saying. I seen the exact casuals and they just mostly socialize to it in the background.

I haven't listened to that song too much but I enjoy stuff like the Cozy Tapes, Vol. 1 by ASAP Mob.

I love trap rap. One of my most favorite music genres. My music playlist is mostly hip-hop and trap rap from this decade.

Not a fan of it. I tried to get into it for the last six years, and it didn't work out for me. I only like some songs from that sub-genre.

Well, there are tons of non-trappers who make fun music too. Think of Childish Gambino, Logic, Kid Cudi, etc.

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D. Yeah, it seems like Twerking is the only dance people do when they listen to trap rap.

Me 3! These are the songs I can handle (although I wasn't aware they were considered trap songs until recently). Most of today's trap-rap, not so much.

Oh, and here is the topic where I found out I did listen to trap-rap back in the 00s.

Honestly, I like any music if it's catchy.  I do have some preferences - I have a thing for classic rock - but I really will take almost anything if it's catchy and the singer doesn't sound like they're dying.

Do you listen to the Gorillaz?

It's hard for me to enjoy something that so carelessly perpetuates racial stereotypes. I understand most people don't think about it that seriously, but when you've been seeing it happen since the 90s you tend to get very sick and tired of it.

I'm guessing ya'll aint ever been to a function or concert with good LOUD trap music. Shít looks just like a punk rock concert. Other than that theres lots of dances, and you can still freestyle with trap music. Maybe it depends on age/location/ethnicity but this is my experience. How old are you btw?

Trap Rap is basically southern rap with 808 style of beats. Young Jessey, Waka Flocka, Gucci Manie and TI often use the word trap in their songs. People who think trap is new forget about those artists saying it a lot and having those 808 style of beats.

This is something I have been saying all along, we've just been stuck in this long southern rap rut for over 20 years, even the 808 beats aren't new, that has been used in styles like Miami bass since the late 1980s.
