I'm not sure if I fully get this question. I'm not particularly a jazz fan, but it has always seemed to exist in it's own little niche with it's own type of fans. So maybe what I'm saying is it has never really been popular or unpopular because it exists "as its own thing". Its not really like there was a period when the predominant type of hit music on the radio was jazz. It's like classical, it's just something that's always there. So I'm not sure how it could "get popular again". ???

Pure 20th century style jazz will never make a comeback in the mainstream, but it will never really die out, and Jazz has a much bigger following than classical European music does. History shows that comebacks are only short-lived, and even then they usually aren't the main sound of the time. However, I think Jazz-influenced/derived music can definitely make become mainstream, especially through alternative hip hop/R&B and electronic music. Same thing for Rock, it's all about creating something new and innovative.

TPAB had a lot of Jazz influence, and some of it was straight up bebop. J Cole's latest album also has some jazz-influenced tracks.

Jazz Rap is a fairly popular in Rap communities, and is picked up more and more by Conscious hip hop artists.
There is also a very healthy British Jazz scene happening these last few recent years that is very hyped up by music journalists :)

This is EXACTLY what I've been trying to tell people here for some time with all these "what if so and so comes back" threads. Once something passes from the mainstream it NEVER "comes back". Oh, something may "come back" as a sort of niche revival for about ten minutes, like the current overhyped, false "vinyl revival" (and I say that as someone who has collected and loved albums since the 1960s) but it never comes back into mainstream use. Culture simply doesn't work that way. Otherwise horse and buggies and iceboxes (to use an example) would have "come back" at some point, among other things. Like the famous Neil Young song says "once you're gone you can't come back/when you're out of the blue and into the black."

“Acid Jazz” is the phrase for this.
Galliano is a fairly popular acid-jazz act (or was, back in the late 90s).
They had a minor hit with “Slack Hands”, which was featured in the 1997 crime thriller film “187” (with Samuel L Jackson).
If this trend rises to prominence in the rap/hip-hop community, then that would be great but it’s not a very feasible scenario at this point.

As long as genres like fashwave or NSBM don't become popular in the 2020's, I'm pretty sure that we would most likely be fine.

I'm curious, what's that?
Edit: Nevermind, lmao, didn't know there was a vaporwave genre dedicated to national socialism. Everything is possible on the internet ::)

It probably won't but at least current wave of Hip-Hop/R&B has been incorporating Jazz elements. That's close enough for me.

Kamasi Washington is the big happening in jazz right now. If he went full mainstream, that'd be insane.

Correct. It's just not being promoted in Top 40 and probably never will again. At this point, I think it's even a long shot for rock to reclaim its former dominance despite how much people want it to happen.

Perhaps, but even though rap is the big man on campus now, rap is only a little over a decade younger than rock and I'm not sure if anyone else can tell but even rap is getting a little long around the ears. Someone wrote "rap is in the glam metal stage" when referring to trap music and it really feels like it. If rap follows a similar trajectory as jazz and rock, rap's downfall is lingering somewhere in the 2030s.

This sounds about right. I think glam metal is a good comparison for the current era of hip-hop.
What do you think about EDM? Do you think it's peaked yet and do you think it will remain prevalent for as long as rock and rap? The 2010s is the first decade it's enjoyed widespread mainstream popularity. It was mostly still underground in the 2000s (with a few crossover hits). It enjoyed a little more popularity in the 90s in the form of eurodance, but that faded quickly in 1998 and was never as dominant as EDM is today.

EDM could definitely become the dominant genre after rap but I doubt it'll be the kind of EDM that's popular right now. Many different types of EDM has been made over the years and very few of those types have gotten mainstream attention. In my opinion, EDM in the 2010s is the most over-commercialized music genre. I think as producers start investigating EDM more thoroughly, other neglected genres inside EDM could potentially and probably will rise.
Here are some great recent house songs.
