When I say died out, I mean when did people stopped using them regularly and retail stores stopped selling them? I remembered blockbuster and hollywood video putting them up for rent until 2003, but stores stopped selling them around 2006, but I hear from other people that VHS was still being sold in stores until 2008. I think the release of Blue-ray killed VHS for good in my opinion. What do you guys think? I like to think:
2000-2002: VHS/DVD (leaning towards VHS)
2003: VHS/DVD equally
2004-2006: VHS/DVD (leaning towards DVD)

VHS tapes are now a novelty, and becoming more retro collector's items, although they'll likely never become as expensive or as high in demand as vinyl records or NES games.

DVD sales surpassed VHS sales in summer 2003.

Yeah, I lot of people I knew switched to DVDs around 2001 or 2002. Me and my family had a DVD/VHS hybrid at the time. It was pretty cool except the rewind button didn't work lol So when we rented tapes from Blockbuster, they charged us for not rewinding the tape.

My family was never on the forefront of adopting new technology, but we got our first DVD player in the summer of 2001.  By 2004, VHS was pretty much a memory.  IIRC, video rental stores stopped carrying them sometime around 2005.

That may be true, but sales were still slightly increasing in 2002 and 2003. There was a huge decline in 2004 though.

Yeah, there's a cool place in my area called Bookmans and they sell all sorts of old books, CDs, cassettes, games, etc.

and VHS's were dead to my family by 2002. Throughout 2002 I only remember my parents getting DVD's, but we always used a DVD/VCR combo box for years, even throughout the rest of the 00's so we could continue to play old VHS tapes just in case. I remember throughout 2000 and 2001 my parents still only bought VHS tapes.

Makes since, because Japan throughout the years has always been ahead of countries when it comes to most technology. When I think of the first touchscreen I ever used, I immediately think of the Nintendo DS which came out in 2004 in the U.S.

Holy s**t I was about to say dude. The moment you started seeing Blu Ray commercials that's when VHS officially died off from what I remember.

I never saw any VHS tapes in Best Buy in 2006 or even 2005, however Blockbuster did have a lot of VHS tapes to rent

With VHS it too too long to fast forward to the good parts of movies.

2003 always seemed a bit too late to me, if you made that statistic for people 18 to 50 years old, the 50% mark from VHS to DVD would be around 2001 or 2002.

Around 2006, was when the format died completely. But even by 2005, DVD was already much more popular than VHS. 2004 felt like the last year that VHS was a viable format for video consumption.
