Subject: Do you think this current generation is coming to an end?
Written By: Star Struck on 04/13/18 at 5:16 pm
We're just a couple months shy from reaching the half point of 2018 and soon enough, it will be 2019! Once 2019 hits, I feel like this current generation is almost over. In 2019, everyone born in the 90s will be in their 20's and everyone born in 2000 and 2001 will be 18 and 19 meaning most, if not all, the 2000s kids would have graduated high school next year. Once 2020 hits, a new generation will start. If 2019 marks the end for this generation, I'm kind of excited to see what the next gen has to offer :) What are your thoughts guys?

You mean Millennials? There has been a few posts about it, the new generation of pop stars, the end of hipster culture, etc. Probably 2018 is the transitional year to Gen Zers culture

All 2000s babies 2000-2006 would be in their teens now in 2019.

Overtime, I have a feeling that people will say that 2018 was the first Z-leaning year in pop culture.

I wasn't trying to confuse 2000s kids with 2000s babies i'm just saying that 2000s borns would be teens by the end of this decade but i should've said borns instead of babies.

Just because every 90's baby will be in their 20's next year, doesn't really mean it's a generational shift. This happens every single decade. In 2009, most if not all 80's babies were in their 20's, in 1999, most if not all 70's babies were in their 20's. It's a repeating cycle. It's not anything new.

This thread is likely going to spark another generationology debate. If that happens, it should be locked, but let's hope it doesn't.
Anyways, I do agree that generations should be defined by decade of birth, instead of events. pop culture, birthrates, etc.
It's way less arbitrary and much easier to process in the brain if you're going by decade of birth;
1940s babies = Baby Boomers
1950s babies = Gen Jones
1960s babies = Baby Busters
1970s babies = Gen X
1980s babies = Gen Y
1990s babies = Millennials
2000s babies = Centennials

Gen Z is definitely taking over, if that's what you mean. A lot of us are pre-teens, teenagers, and some of us even young adults now, and 2018 is the first year when someone born in the 2000s is actually an adult.

Really? You can’t tell the difference between 1997 and 2017, in terms of pop culture and climate and attitudes towards society?
Was trap rap and EDM “mainstream” in the late ‘90s? No, but post-grunge was. Do you hear any post-grunge on Top 40 radio anymore? Do you hear R&B (of the Keith Sweat variety)? Nu-metal?
What about cultural attitudes? I feel as though my generation is awash in nihilism, although it might be starting to slowly get better.
I don’t notice that nihilistic, misanthropic, sociopathic air from 70s and 80s babies. Or even early 90s babies for that matter.

IMO one of the late 2010's years (2017-2019) will probably be seen as the first 100% Generation Z pop culture year. Right now, millennial culture is on its last legs and it seems like Generation Z really has taken over.
A new generation will not start in 2020 because that has already happened. We have famous artists influencing pop culture who were born mostly in the late 90's/early 2000's. If there is any millennial culture still lingering, it's most likely not mainstream or popular as Gen Z culture. The only thing I can predict in 2020 in terms of Generation Z pop culture is that all millennial influences will be gone and we will firmly be in Gen Z culture.

I actually think that is 2017. We started 2017 is virtually the same musical era we had been in since 2013. The Chainsmokers, teen pop, and dancehall dominated. By the end, it was noticeably different, with new artists like Cardi B, Kodak Black, Lana Del Rey, Camila Cabello, Khalid, etc dominating. Lady Gaga signed her Vegas residency which means she is likely a legacy artist by this point never to return to the kind of prominence she had in the early '10s. Katy Perry and Taylor Swift have shown clear signs of being past their peak with their latest albums. Eminem has lost it (though I do like the Nowhere Fast extended version). Bottom line is, 2017 seems like a "changing of the guard" year looking back on it. It was the beginning of the transition everyone on this board is waiting for. 2017 was also the year that you could really feel that we were past "peak hipster."

I don't know. March for our Lives is more or less another one of the hashtag movements that have been big all decade. It really isn't anything new.

Really? Lana Del Rey saw presence since 2011 at least thanks to "Born to Die", and she has no dominance whatsoever right now. Her peak was in 2013 with "Summertime Sadness"
She belongs to the 2012/2013 indie krew that saw prominance during those years, not the "Gen Z" krew or whatever y'all calling it.

No, I absolutely disagree.
March for Our Lives was a mostly student lead nationwide protest calling for proper gun control and reform. That has NEVER happened in the entire history of the US. Students across America taking the lead and asking for gun reform and it was loosely organized, that's entirely different from Occupy Wall Street, the Arab Spring, BLM, etc.

Led by students my arse. They were fully funded by deep-pocketed anti-gun groups. What a sham.

The only sham is the NRA (which is a terrorist organization in my opinion) and you gun nuts.
The fact that you think those students were in the pockets of gun control advocates is sickening. Disgusting 8-P.

Even so it will be remembered as part of the same big movements of the 2010’s, that were started on social networks and inspired each other

Not really.
Especially if the Congressional midterms later this year end up being a Blue wave like many predict and a Democrat is elected President in 2020.
A lot of the students in March for Our Live can vote in either 2018 and/or 2020 and they have been energized to vote and get a lot of these deficient politicians out of office.
They WILL have an impact greater than the other ones we have seen.

I'm thinking more 98' to now. I know there's been lots of changes but there's been this overall feel that's stuck ever since. I'm not talking about specifics.
And I don't see nihilism in millennials. In fact, I think millennials are super into causes. Social justice has been a huge thing with our generation. That doesn't seem nihilistic to me. It seems like the exact opposite.

We started 2017 is virtually the same musical era we had been in since 2013.
I disagree. The music from 2017, even the early part, was already different from the music of 2013. Trap rap wasn’t as popular in 2013 as it was in 2017. I don’t think I can imagine “Shape of you” or Drake’s “Passionfruit” or Future’s “Mask Off” being released in 2013, nor can I imagine songs like “Wake me up” by Avicii , “Suit & Tie” Justin Timberlake, or “Power Trip” by J. Cole being released in 2017.

I do think 2012-2013 was the last Millennial high school year looking back; Facebook was still in its prime, PS3 and Xbox 360 were still popular, emo and scene subcultures were at their very tail end, last year of yoloswag sheesh, preppy brand hoodies in their last days, dubstep and electropop still relevant, apps like Angry Birds and Temple Run still being relevant, TV shows like Breaking Bad, The Office, and How I Met Your Mother at their tail ends, teens still having flip/brick phones at first before moving up to smartphones, etc.
From 2013-2014 onward smartphones were now an affordable, must have first choice, the rise of Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, and Lorde, rise of PS4 and Xbox One, Dubstep phasing out in favor of EDM, Lady Gaga and Kesha fading out in popularity, Blackberrys dead AF by this year, Twitter becoming more popular among teens, "teens aren't using Facebook anymore" becoming a popular sentiment, Vine and Snapchat getting big this year, Miley Cyrus twerking on the VMAs indicating a weird culture shift, "post-ironic dank maymays" becoming popular, etc.
I do consider Gen Z as starting in the late 90s so that's when early Gen Z teen culture probably started to me, 2013-2014ish. By the time that Whip Whip Nae Nae song came out in 2015, Gen Z teen culture had fully arrived for sure. I would say Millennial teen culture began with Britney Spears (1998) and ended with Gangnam Style (2012) or mayybeee Harlem Shake (2013).

I wouldn't go as far as to say 2013 to now is gen z. I think maybe 90s borns are just latter half millennials the same way Jones generation is a latter half version of Boomers.

I agree. The 2012-2013 school year felt like the last millennial school year. The 2013-2014 - 2016-2017 school years felt transitional. I actually think this is the first pure Generation Z school year. With the March for our lives and all early 2000's babies in high school now, it really does feel like Generation Z culture has finally arrived.

I consider early-mid 90s borns to be Millennials and late 90s born to be Gen Z. 2013-2015 was around the time where the last mid 90s born started graduating high schools and teen culture shifted to be targeted more at late 90s borns with all the new stuff I mentioned.

Not to mention 2012 was the peak of popularity for Hunger Games (very much a Late Millennial teen fad) with its movie released and everyone talking about it. The 2013-2015 movies, especially Mockingjay Pt 1, were not really talked about as much from what I remember.

I feel like Twilight is the movie for millennials. The Hunger Games’ primary audience were mostly 10-16 year olds, which were born 1996-2002, which I think makes it more of a late millennial/ early gen Z movie than a completely millennial movie.

Oh great, here comes the generationology/decadeology debate, I was right...
The OP didn't even use the terms "Gen Y", "Millennial", or "Gen Z" in his original post. He was referring by decade of birth, and decade of childhood.
If you ask me, generations should be classified by decade of birth, since it's way less arbitrary and way less ambiguous. This is also how China classifies generations.

I wasn't into the Twilight books/movies but I actually jumped on THG bandwagon when I read the first book after the first movies' trailer was released. The first two books were fast paced, interesting, easy to read, and intellectual enough for adults to read. The last book I thought was good but slower paced, a little less interesting, a little harder to read, and had a more adult message that was harder to swallow. I hated the first movie. It's pretty groan-worthy. However, I liked Catching Fire and the Mockingjay movies but Mockingjay movies does have the depressing vibe the book has so a lot of people didn't care for them.

The Hunger Games and Catching Fire were pretty popular. Mockingjay was hurt by the fact they split it into two movies. It seems like that was a trend in the early and mid '10s after the final Harry Potter movie was split. However it worked for Harry Potter since there was enough story there for two movies. When the Hunger Games and Divergent series tried to do it, people saw it as the cheap cash grab that it was.
I consider the Hunger Games to be the beginning of the dystopian young adult fiction fad that was specifically a mid '10s thing (even though the books were popular before that). Blocky, dystopian fonts seemed everywhere back around 2014 and 2015. It seems that in the Trump era, that has died down somewhat.

I remember when James Cameron's Avatar was popular, a lot of people were declaring it the defining movie of the Millennial generation.
I would say the Hunger Games was both. I really liked the movies and I am quite a bit older than the targeted demographic.

Far from reality... we’re comparing the biggest movements of recent Middle East history and economic discontent against of just a reinforcement law for guns. Also, the elections of 2020 is a different topic which involves every problematic in the US, you can’t only focus on that student movement as the principal cause of the Trump’s exit (obviously if he loses the elections)
